I love mine. Had it for a few years now and flattened a few hundred records. Bought the heat pouch as well. Overall - a product I cannot live without. It's as important as a record cleaning machine. In my findings it actually takes 6-8 hours to flatten and, in some cases, much much more but still worth it!

I actually made my own Vinyl Flat. I had a local sheet metal shop cut me 2 13 inch circles. $20. I did order the Groovy Pouch and the Groovy Rings from Vinyl Flat though. So far, I’ve fixed about 40 records successfully!!! Just takes P A I T E N C E!!

"You have to make sure it's clean.... and of course it's not!" ...Spoken like a true collector, who actually plays his records, rather than just leaving 'em in the plastic, haha! Good man! Very interesting review, I appreciate the detail... and given that my B&O can track just about anything, I'm not likely to make the investment myself. I'd be doing it more because big warps piss me off than because I have trouble playing 'em. The moral of the story: Don't leave your records sealed!! haha
@nolifetilmetal19 жыл бұрын
Metal Theologian Exactly. I bought several "mint, still sealed" albums from the 80's and they all look exactly like the one I showed in the video. Annoying! Nice Christmas present from my daughter though. It will get used.

I've been flatting my warped records with two sheets of glass... You know, from unused frames. Place the record between the glass and let it lay out in the sun for a couple of minutes. Works like a charm. Record flat comes across like a gimmick to me. Glad you like it. KISS RULES!!!

Glad you got it to work. It takes some trial and error but it works. And it looks like each heat bag is a little different, so our times may vary. I've never had to cook a record for more than 3... maybe 3 1/2 hours. Just keep playing with it (on records you don't mind wrecking, haha) and you will get your timing down. Great video bro!

Hey, Scott! Thank you for the vinyl flat review. Looks like it's going to take a little practice :-) I still may buy one. I've become a bit reluctant to buy sealed records from the seventies and eighties because, at least in my limited experience, they do tend to be warped. My sealed vinyl purchases of Krokus "The Blitz", Black N Blue "Without Love" and Lizzy Borden "Menace to Society" were all warped. ARGH!
@nolifetilmetal19 жыл бұрын
Yes, I am also reluctant to buy "sealed" records from the 70's and 80's. The record I fixed in the video was one such album. Sealed for 30 years and sold as "mint", I was disappointed when it arrived and was so warped it was unplayable. Those records you have all sound like good candidates for the Vinyl Flat. Thanks for watching.
@fortherecord15698 жыл бұрын
I'm guessing by flattening the record with heat, it has slightly changed the shape of the record. The grooves have actually been changed a bit and now sway or ripple back and forth to compensate for the hight adjustment by flattening the record. Basically, if you can't UN-WARP the record the exact same way it was warped (which is physically impossible) you will end up with many different audible/physical results. The more narrow and steep the warp is (like the record you have) the more audible the changes to the grooves will be. A wider, less steep warp would have better results. NOW, having said ALL THAT. You basically took a record which was garbage and made it (at least) listenable, which is the only scenario when this thing should be used. So hey, no harm, no fowl. BUT, I would avoid using it JUST for the sake of flattening any record with a slight warp as you could potentially make the listening experience of the LP worse rather than better.
@nolifetilmetal18 жыл бұрын
Your last paragraph is basically the way it is. If a record is unusable it will at least make it playable. It could never make a record perfect and can in fact make it much worse. I've mostly had success but there have been a few where it didn't work at all (esp. edge warp) and the record had to be tossed.
@alnka19747 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing this video, I have a brand new re released King Diamond "The Graveyard" LP that I actually felt bad taking it back again to the record store who exchanged the 1st copy that was warped and the opening track on each side was skipping like crazy but the second copy didn't fair better so again I felt bad taking it back and decided to keep the thing and BTW both pieces were sealed, thanks again for the video, I'm gonna have to get me one of these.

The one thing I could see about improving this might be 2 more screws on the outside where the "tabs" are to make the outside edge of the LP flatter. Theres not extra pressure to the outside.
@nolifetilmetal18 жыл бұрын
+Lee Spears I sometimes use binder clips if I have a very weird warp on only one side of the record. The extra screws aren't a bad idea.

Current 2020 instructions say start at One hour fifteen minutes. If that doesn't work, add 15 minutes and try again. Keep adding 15 minutes until you see improvement, than add 5 minutes per try until the record is playable. I have had a couple of records flatten in 1:15. 1:45 to 2:15 is more common. I've only had one that took as long as four hours. I have not had any records it would not improve. I've had the Record Flat and Pouch for about four months. It has paid for itself many times over. For $215, its a no-brainer.

It worked! I wonder if a gradual warp is easier to repair than a "sharp" warp like I see here? Thanks for the video, I plan to invest in one but I end up buying records instead!

The entire thing is just under $200 (for the flat and the bag). It was an awesome gift from my daughter.
@galus144366 жыл бұрын
I've gotten decent results with the 2 glass trick or the blow dryer heat on record sitting on marble, them glass and weight applied, but all this only worked with those nice gradual wraps, even if high as a hill. But any kind of sharp warp in a smaller spot, especially the edge, forget about it.

Did you notice the fact that the system works terrible during winter? this of course if your house doesn't have heating. In my country where the weather isn't very extreme, we don't need heating systems for winter but the Vinyl Flat works very bad for most of the heat dispels out of the press leaving it just warm and not as hot as it use to be during summer. The solution for me? well it's simpler than it seems: i put the pouch and the press inside a cooler box and it works perfectly...even hotter than summer!

I got the Obsession Methods of Madness LP too and it even had a 2 inch long crack in it! I tried the method of heating it up in the oven between two sheets of glass but I think I used too much heat or something because its flat now but it still doesn't track properly, the tone arm jiggles around like a seismograph recording an earthquake

Through trial and error, I think I may have it down. Depending on the warp, I usually do 30 minutes on 150 degrees in the oven, sandwiched between 2 heavy tiles and some felt. First one was the Heavy Metal cartoon soundtrack - I wasted disc one as I had it on too high and for too long. It literally flattened the grooves, so the needle couldn't even fit into them anymore. But the second one I did, a lame throw-away album as a tester, came out perfect ! I have a Phil Keaggy that's warped, I'm gonna try the oven again. Wish me luck ! haha !!

Scott Waters a lot of the vinyl I buy direct from bands or at record stores is warped a little right of the plastic?? , most will play just fine , but sadly I just got the danzig sings Elvis vinyl from cleopatra records and it was warped and skipping right out of the plastic they quickly sent me a replacement and it did the same thing , so I’m dealing with them now , when they start skipping on multiple songs I consider that unplayable , I don’t want to mess up my player by playing defective vinyl . Have you dealt with warped skipping vinyl on new releases right out of the plastic??

On almost all of my records there is at least a very slight warp, I can't really tell from listening but the needle still moves up and down on the record especially on the thinner pressings I have. Is this affecting sound quality and I just don't realize it? And is there any way to completely fix a warped record without damaging/altering the grooves?
@nolifetilmetal18 жыл бұрын
There is no way to completely fix a warp without effecting the album. There are those turntable toppers the you can put on top of the record that will flatter the slight warp when its playoff. To be honest I don't think a slight warp really effects the sound.

After nearly 50 years of collecting vinyl I discovered that CD's never warp. Thank you but I ain't going back. Wanna buy some records?
@nolifetilmetal17 жыл бұрын
Brian Newell I collect both. CDs can get rot though. I have thousands of CDs and have been collecting since the mid-80s and have had three go bad for no particular reason.

Just completely destroyed a record with this thing.
@nolifetilmetal13 жыл бұрын
Yes, I have destroyed a couple records, but they were unplayable to begin with so no big loss. I have also saved many records from the trash. It's not full-proof for sure.

Considering the high cost for this "product", around 120 USD, I just watched a video online where a guy achieved better results with under $10 worth of materials from Home Depot. Two large, smooth ceramic tiles. This just looks like a waste of money to me. If they want to improve the product, add 4 tightening screws at each end.
@nolifetilmetal18 жыл бұрын
I bought it when it was half price. It's worked fairly well for me but I agree adding a few screws would help with edge warps.

I'm sorry but until u honor Spinal Tap you aren't a true metal head. How can you leave out the true fathers of LOUD metal? Who else had 20 on their Marshall amps? Not Sabbath, Dio, Maiden, Pat Boone.
@tobinmummert83746 жыл бұрын
I would never, ever do this to any record!! The noise your hearing is more than most likely melted grooves! This product is a scam piece of shit!!
@nolifetilmetal16 жыл бұрын
Tobin Mummert it’s not a scam. If a warped record is unplayable this product will make it playable. Hardly a scam.
@stevenmajewski38708 жыл бұрын
That is a tiny warp and it skips because you have a crappy turntable. Those turntables are overpriced junk.
@nolifetilmetal18 жыл бұрын
+steven majewski Does it matter what turntable is used to check for a warp? The fact is, the record was warped, the Vinyl Flat fixed the warp. That particular turntable is from the 1980's and was hardly an over-priced piece of junk, but thanks for the comment.
