Film at Lincoln Center was pleased to honor Viola Davis as the recipient of the 48th Chaplin Award. The award was presented at a gala evening in Davis’s honor on April 24 at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall in New York City. The evening encompassed a joyful celebration of the actor and producer’s incredible body of work featuring notable speakers and film clips, culminating in the presentation of the Chaplin Award.
The annual Gala, which has honored some of cinema’s most outstanding talents, featured Meryl Streep, who appeared with Davis in Doubt, for which they both received Academy Award® nominations; Gina Prince-Bythewood, who directed Davis in The Woman King; Steve McQueen, who directed Davis in Widows; Jessica Chastain, who starred alongside Davis in the Academy Award® nominated The Help and The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby; George C. Probably my favorite actress ever. I have a degree in theater and Viola is THE EXCEPTION. Don't get me wrong, there are many incredible actors including Meryl, Cate, Kate, Daniel, Jessica, etc. However, Viola is in a class by herself, she thrust herself through to the Hollywood Elite full of ageism and biased views on race. She acted her ass off to say, "look at me", "I matter!" "You will not ignore me!" I say Bravo Viola, and above all THANK YOU for sharing yourself so unselfishly with us. We are better for it.
