Tina Brown hosted an inspiring group of women for a night of engaging conversation live from Neuehouse Hollywood on Sunset Boulevard. Closing the show was award-winning actress Viola Davis who discussed her humble upbringing and and working in Hollywood as a woman of color.

Olivia Bloway that’s the world we live in today. People like to turn their hearing aids off to situations that doesn’t concern them because they can’t relate. If they can’t relate then it doesn’t exist.

I don’t hear it that way. I think Tina wanted to give her pauses to catch her breath and make sure she covered the entirety of Viola’s impressive career and her thoughts on diversity. As a moderator, she did a great job covering all of the angles.

Definitely enjoyed hearing Viola. I could listen to her all day. But you’re right about that interviewer. She wasn’t that great of a listener at all. And I grew tired of her interrupting Viola.

Why everyone is attacking the interviewer ? I don't know her personally, so she might be a bigot but it doesn't show. She carries out the interview professionally, as she knows she has little time she tries to get through as many questions as she can and she doesn't try to outshadow or validate Miss Davis. We don't need that kind of crap, especially not from Caucasians so we will be more focused on that nice white lady rather than what the message of the black lady. Unprivileged people don't need to be validated, just give them time to speak up and don't interrupt them.

She should have been willing to sacrifice a few questions in order to get a deeper interview Viola was about to give some interesting deep views each time she was interrupted. When she asked about how she got through the poverty Viola was about to go deep but she cut her off.

I mentioned the blacks particularly because it is those people who are being steered by anger and the masses. You're trying to ourscream each other which is why I have so much more respect for the blacks who don't give into the rhetoric and carve their own paths. Notice I used "the blacks" again, only in a positive connatation. Don't expect you to bring attention to that part, though.

This interviewer is so privileged and tone deaf it hurts. At the beginning, Viola said she didn't know how her speech was received. That would have been the moment to ask her about the me too movement. Let the audience take in all of Viola -- the jokes, the emotion, the passion. Ffs.

I agree that the interviewer was terrible. She had a set of questions she wanted to ask. Viola had so much to say and the interviewer kept cutting her off asking questions that were really not relevant to the conversation. It was like she was not listening. She was did not see Viola. She saw someone to interview.

A truly great interview contains realness and transparency on both ends. Not just one. If it's just one, it becomes cold, distant, and uncomfortable to watch. Shout out to Viola for being real, honest, yet still maintaining class and poise. I need them to have a debrief of this interview and make some adjustments for the next time.

Tina Brown is horrendous at this interview. She wasn't here to talk with Viola, she was here to talk at her. Throw in all the usual tropes. It is just painful watching this because Viola is holding back from saying Tina STFU and left me do this. What a waste of Viola's time. Tina B you were so wrong for this entire thing. You're tone deaf and so many other things but I need not waste my time to tell you because you wouldn't hear or care to receive any of it. Next time just put Viola on stage and you don't say a word.

I thought it was just me. She was terrible. Very cringe. It was like she wanted Viola to say certain things, instead of just asking her questions. IE. You were do angry etc. Why tell Viola he she is feeling. Question should've been in this situation how did it make you feel etc.... Viola was brilliant.

Starting about 25:35 BOILED. MY. BLOOD. It’s as if she is mocking Viola’s struggle. Cutting her off, talking over her and implying that even though her screen time in “third girl from the left” was limited and insignificant, at least she got an award out of it. 🤭I literally had to play it over a couple of times bc I wasn’t sure if I digested that correctly. The NERVE. What an incompetent and undeserving, DISRESPECTFUL interviewer. She had absolutely no right to be interviewing such an incredible and understated talent as Viola Davis. Tina Brown is an absolute disgrace here. Period. I’m floored.

There’s a reason why some celebs don’t do that much interviews. Because most interviewers are idiots, they often interrupt their interviewee, and just do these kind of interviews to profit off of their celeb interviewees' names.

I am grateful for the rawness of this interview. Many peoples commented on Tina as not getting it or getting what Viola was stating. The reality is that she couldn’t get it because she doesn’t have the entire awareness to know the fullness of Viola as a person. Hence the reason why she directed those questions into areas that didn’t entirely embody the truth of what was being conveyed. That rawness was necessary in both Tina and Viola. So it can reveal what needs to be healed right in conversation. Tina demonstrated what many people would display when they have no real awareness but desire to learn, and Viola demonstrated the voice that we all must hear so we are capable of breaking down barriers in newer narratives so everyone can learn. Therefore if Tina didn’t ask it the way she was being her authentic self, we wouldn’t have gotten those raw responses from Viola. This was purposeful and necessary. I loved it

Viola, thank you for being the embodying definition of a strong, beautiful, sexy, classy, natural, courageously fierce black woman!!! Thank you for sharing your history and passion with us. I love everything you do! I think you are a remarkable artist and person. I have deep admiration for you sista. Tina, hopefully from this experience you will grow as an interviewer. The main thing you missed the mark on: You didn’t truly LISTEN to Mrs. Viola and simply RESPOND to her. You can’t be so wrapped up in hitting your questions like an emotionless robot. My suggestion: Ask a question, then fluidly go where the interviewee leads you, and if that is in a direction that is different than your proposed next question, know that it is okay, because we the viewers want to feel the organic flow of the interview rather than the rigidity of an interviewer just rattling off a list of disconnected questions for the sake of it. Just keep practicing, I’m sure you’ll do better next time.

An interview of this depth, that touched on poverty, Jim Crow, the lack of funding for ALL stories, deserved so much more apathy and curiosity than what this interviewer was able to provide. She was shallow and undeserving of such a hallowed narrative. I wish I could be the one talking to Viola! So many nuggets to be received by an interviewer and this woman was as empty and unemotional as they come. I was CRINGING at how obsessed the colonizer was (as most white women and men of affluence are) with the black struggle. Ugh.

Sofie, the interviewer came into this interview as if she was in National geographic, she soulless she is clueless and more importantly she is too old to empathize because like old white females, they are like "what's the big deal ". I jumped here from the essence talk. it struck me that black women are free when they don't have to articulate pain like this because the whole room shares a degree of it.

Appreciated Viola's candor and insights -- she spoke bravely on many topics others are afraid to speak about. This interview could've been much better if someone else had asked the questions. Tina Brown couldn't even pronounce Shonda Rhimes' name correctly (not because of her accent) and it didn't flow like a conversation because she stuck to her printed questions instead of listening and creating follow-up questions.

The interviewer is a funny cat. It’s like TMZ fed her these ‘HOT TOPIC’ questions for ratings. It’s always sexier to talk about slavery and poverty and drug use/abuse and illiteracy when it comes to these successful black actors pasts.

Tina Brown. Tina. Brown. You didn’t know the gem you had in front of you and so you were completely incapable of engaging in an intimate other-centered interview that made room for the incomparable Viola Davis to really share her story with you. As a result, you asked questions like a PE teacher taking attendance right before the start of gym class and kidnapped from the audience what could have been a spectacular experience for all. What a lost opportunity. Viola Davis shine on queen 👑!

This interviewer.... She asked her questions, then answered them for her. Maybe she was pressed for time? Trying to give her the benefit of the doubt here. Her interview style, her assumptions, and interruptions were annoying. It's like she already had an idea of who Viola Davis was, and she wasn't going to be wrong. But, I love VD's answers and grace.

Viola Davis showed up for this interview. She was willing to go deep about things most don't talk about and the interviewer seemed to be hearing something entirely different. It's like when you're talking to someone and they are only thinking about what they are going to say next. This could have been an unbelievable conversation....on Viola's part it was, but geesh, this interviewer....ugh!
