On a hot August night, not all that long ago and for the next four consecutive nights the good citizens of Toronto went crazy and ignited the largest riot in the citys history and one of the largest anti-Greek riots in the world.
Why did it happen? Why the Greeks? What were the consequences? Why, until now, has this incredible incident been forgotten? Incorporating detailed interviews with historians and family members of those affected, Violent August explores the causes of the riot and chronicles the events in detail. Using actual archival photos, newspaper reports and representational newsreel footage, the documentary brings the people, places and incidents vividly to life.

Violent August reveals the social conditions and motives of the enraged WW1 veterans who started the riots and the position of the small community of Greek immigrants and restaurant operators who unwittingly became the lightening rod for the violence. The film provides a powerful and shocking example of how a festering climate of racism and resentment became a ticking time bomb primed to explode at the slightest provocation.

After this incident there was nowhere to eat until the Hellenes/Greeks rebuilt their restaurants. I like the producers work here. Almost convincing that lynching is ok. At the same time the genocide of Hellenes/Greeks was happening in the former Hellenic/Greek states which have been taken and now called turkey so it doesn't surprise me to know that all around the western world this was happening.

According to historical records, Greece resisted for a total of 219 days against Italy, Germany, Bulgaria and Albania between October of 1940 and April of 1941 when Nazi Germany launched a final, massive attack through Bulgaria. There was a request for a surrender and the Greeks said no. It was a mob of prejudice and angry people, they came home and saw things had changed and they wanted to blame someone.

Greece joined forces with the Entente in 1917. The Kingdom of Greece remained neutral until then because The king of Greece was the German Emperor's BROTHER IN LAW! We had a Danish King and a German Queen! Still this happened a year after Greece went to war because... reasons

Anglo Canadian’s were extremely prejudice against most immigrants in the early 1900’s to 1970’s. Those of you who have parents or grandparents who immigrated to Canada during that time frame can tell you their first hand accounts of being victims of hate.

@ Mr.Emir Şentürk, Good day to you sir. Before there ever was a group of people known as Seljuk Turk...... Armenians, Kurds, indigenous tribes along with the Greeks. Had lived there for years possibly even thousands of years before the westward migration through colonization, from warfare brought about by a Turkic land grab. That being said the unfortunate hatred that you have for Cypriots is unjust, as they had adopted Hellenism before there even was a tribe remotely close to a modern day Turkish identity. Turkey is the invader and not the Greeks, a nation that has been concurred will eventually one day resolve to gain their independence back. This is only a logical conclusion, I do not understand your frustration? As for your confusion on your genetic make up, why you have blonde hair and green eyes, seems to be of European decent. Since Turkic peoples are have a swarthy complexion and dark hair, it is a good deduction that a coupling either through marriage or rape in your ancestral lineage would indicate that you have Greek blood in you. My dear Sir, please educate yourself before you speak as it shows a lack of intellect and bad judgment. Remember you are a member of a society of many races.

@@gunnyakdo1653 Greeks started making colonies in Anatolia during the 8th century, so no it's definitely our home as well. Also those groups of people were part of the Assyrian Empire and it wasn't the Greeks who genocided the Assyrian people.

After 1917 Greece was in the war as the neeutralist king Constantine the 1st was reluctantly forced to abdicate. After the war the Greek army paraded in the Champs Elysees together with the armies of the other entente nations. Therefore how is an antigreek riot in Canada in 1918 justified ?

FISOG the Former Islamic state of Greece. created by the British East India company in 1821.. Macedonia was a part of yugoslavia for less than a hundred years. The greeks were muslims for more than 400yrs therefore they hve been muslims longer than theve been christians.all the monastries were macedonian as the word "greek"had not been concieved yet it is an english word The ancient greek city states were inhabited by Indians. Those ancient greeks were killed off by the Visigoths in 393AD and left no descendants. The Macedonians were never killed off. modern greeks are in fact Albanian gap fillers from the 700sAD and pontusian refugees from 1920. these gapfillers did not participate in byzantine politics. the Macedonian dynasty did. and yes it was the greeks that converted to Islam to appease the turks. FISOG you are. The modern greeks are historic, cultural, economic and religious frauds. The modern greeks are not the same people as the ancients. they're fake greeks.

Demy Alexander the Great was Greek (Hellenic) from the region of Makedonia. Even his grand father participated on the Olympic games. As known only Greeks could participate in Olympic games... Only his name Alexander Αλεξ+Ανδρός And Macedonia Μάκος +δνος It's 100% Greek language. In Slavic those words means nothing.... Why you want to say that you are coming from Alexander ??? Be proud of your own (real) history You're Serbobulgarian (We recognize one nation firstly from his language)
