The premiere performance of Violent Shadows for Bass Trombone and Trombone Quintet, performed by AJ Muusse and members of the CMU Trombone Studio at my Master's Composition Recital in 2018.
Program Notes:
Violent Shadows was originally written for AJ Muusse in 2017. The wind ensemble version of the piece was written in 2019 for Evan Clifton and a consortium of 9 bass trombonists. Inspired by progressive rock, Violent Shadows showcases the different characters of the bass trombone, from the loud and aggressive side commonly associated with the instrument to the more pure and lyrical side.
Throughout the piece, the solo and accompaniment parts work in opposition to one another. The piece begins with an energetic and fierce A section, featuring a call and response between the soloist and accompaniment where the echoed response is often melodically and rhythmically inverted. This conflict calms down in the slow and reflective B section, but some rhythmic tension persists as the bass trombone's lyrical melody often moves on contrasting beats from the accompaniment. The two halves of the ensemble fully come together in a grandiose statement of the B section, but this unification is cut short by an embellished recapitulation of the opening section and a quick, harmonically dissonant coda.

I definitely know what pedal notes you are talking about? Every time I want to play pedal notes that loud, I wish I could have good sounds and they are annoying sometimes. I'm going to be a junior in this year in august! And I wanted to play the bass trombone ever since when it was my first year of first playing the trombone. I thought a bass trombone was the one with a F attachment. But my junior high director told me that a bass trombone had two triggers and it is a high school instrument. So then when I was in 9th grade I asked my high school band director if I could play it and he said yes! And I was ready for the challenge and I made 1st Band 2nd in All-Region regular band this year and 2nd Band 1st chair in All-Region Jazz I got to try out for All-State regular band and I sadly did not make it because I practiced so hard but some kid from a different school got scared of my sound and he pushed on my bell. And I was mad because he busted my lip when I had an hour to practice before my audition happened and I did not make it because I could not play these pedal notes that they chose and they took to much air. And this only scale was a hard scale called g# harmonic minor and it is like the hardest scale on the harmonic scales!

The brutality and meter changes of the fast sections remind me of the work of John Mackey and Eric Whitacre, and the lyrical portions are lovely! As a trombonist myself, I'd love to perform this, but I don't know anyone who would play it with me :(

Nice piece. Back when I was studying bass trombone, one had to, many times, look to tuba literature (yes, I'm old and haven't played in 10 years) to find decent material to perform. Should you do something like this again, might I suggest that you consider a tuba instead of a bass trombone for the lowest voice. In my opinion, the tuba's sonority provides a solid foundation and its harmonic overtones lend themselves so well to the trombone choir's fullness. Yes, the solo bass trombone will still come through, even with the tuba, given its timbre. Food for thought.
@cehass11
@cehass11 3 жыл бұрын
I appreciate your suggestion! I’ve had performances of this piece with the accompaniment played by a mixed low brass quintet (with trombones, euphoniums, and tubas) and it worked really well. I’m always open to those kind of substitutions. I’ll definitely consider writing a designated tuba part in the future for something like this though!
@michaelquillen2679
@michaelquillen2679 3 жыл бұрын
@@cehass11 Yes, this piece would work well for the mixed brass you described. I know the purists will frown upon me, but I've always preferred a tuba to a contrabass trombone. The tuba just makes the whole ensemble sound richer, fuller, and bigger. Again, a nice piece you wrote. All I've ever written for trombone ensembles are arrangements.

@adamschmidt6386 4 жыл бұрын
I know I'm late but I hope this helps. It only sounds like it's being played on tenor because the EQ isnt quite right for the room they are playing in. If you listen to quite a few of the soloist's low parts, it's lacking a lot of power when they start to push in the lower register. Something easily fixed in a sound editor or audio file compiler.
