Last year we took a trip to one of the workshops in China where our student instruments are made. Some of our customers find it hard to believe that our violins, violas, cellos and double basses from China are 'handmade' so we thought that we would make a short film showcasing the beautiful skill and precision that goes into every instrument. Enjoy!

Not all Chinese shops are alike. We're only watching one group of people. A lot of the people in the comments seem to overlook this. I have a Carlo Lamberti Master Series that I use for a variety of styles from Old Timey to Classical and it's more violin than I am a player. It's a beautiful, powerful violin.

I've purchased a 100 dollar violin made in china a few weeks ago. I've always wanted to play this beautiful instrument since i was 6 years old. But my family couldn't afford it back then. I was kinda forced to play a different instrument and so i began playing the guitar. I've completely forgot about my childhood dream up until three weeks ago. Despite all the bad reviews posted below any china product, i was confident enough to give it a try. Also because i didn't want to spend a thousand dollars on something i haven't touched for 20 years. And then she finally arrived. She looked better than expected and the sound is gorgeous. Everything has a nice finish and feels really sturdy. And now that i've seen this video... I was suprised. Despite the fact that my violin has been produced in mass production. I couldn't believe that so much work was put into such a cheap instrument. Of course i'll change to an advanced product someday. But for every beginner, for everyone who wishes to start playing the violin. Fret not to purchase one of the cheap ones. They do their job pretty well and i hope it makes you happy as much as i am.

You'll need to play a few before you realise just how bad yours probably is... until you develop your playing skills you just can't test the instrument although, a 100-dollar violin will certainly hold you back. when you do finally transition to something made by a skilled luthier or even a well-made European workshop instrument it's like playing on a violin from another planet!!! enjoy the Chinese one for now but be prepared for a mindblowing experience in the future :)

I have watched videos of violins being made other places and they all use power tools and take more time in order to produce an instrument of equal quality. I am wholly impressed by the skill, precision, speed, and overall artistry shown by the Chinese violin makers. Amazing

These are actually made better than I thought they were. I think all the snobbery comes from people who have never made an instrument and never will. I make my own fiddles one at a time but I feel neither insulted nor threatened by these beautiful Chinese instruments. Considering it's such a new tradition for them, it's impressive how well they do with what they have.

There are many Chinese makers making world class violins now. From Zheng Quan, Ming Jiang Zhu's Noble Heart shop, Scott Cao, etc and many more. Search those names above. Those makers top most bench violins have won many international awards. Their workshop level violins are very good . Their top bench violins..one maker through entire production, can cost 10-30 K$. For 1 thousand to 3 thousand dollars you can get a workshop violin that sounds absolutely wonderful...like a European violin costing 5-20 K$, or better.

Jeez there's a lot of snobbery here. Violin shaped objects? I have an 18th Century French fiddle? Lah fucking dih dah! The fiddles are affordable, at $400, and their sound quality is *good enough* for students. These are no different from inexpensive instruments made anywhere else, and if you want another generation of players, you'll accept the fact that not everyone can afford upwards of $6,000 for a student violin.

I learnt violin for over 10 years in China and my teacher is also a Luthier. Sadly I can not afford on of his violin because it cost upward of $3000usd at the time. So he picked a mass produced unbranded violin for me which produced very good sound quality for the fraction of the price. I see nothing wrong with chinese made violins especially the build quality and understanding of classical music has picked up significantly than 10 years ago.

True! My first 4 years were on borrowed chinese cellos from the community orchestra. The first I bought myself was chinese too. Only then, already working with the instrument, that I got the chance to buy a professional cello. Also worth mentioning that my teacher later bought a high level chinese cello that sounds amazing for only $3k, he leaves that instrument in the US for when he tours there, and leaves his american made cello in Brazil, where we live.

What workshop in china is this video from? Vecchio by any chance?? Nice vid thanks for sharing. Yes its not your fanciest 100 year old unaffordable violin, everybody knows that, but they stand strong in their own category for being affordable and having a very decent sound. I encourage everybody to actually try one and listen for yourself. I just think that there are some inconsistencies from one to the other, but hey, that's like that with any instrument line up. I don't own one of these (yet) but am somewhat familiar with them and wouldn't mind adding one to my collection. Greetings everybody and remember, ppl that start on these will one day be playing for us great pieces. Peace ✌

Thanks for this video, maybe it will help end a little bit of the huge prejudice people have against chinese instruments Of course it's not as acurrately made as higher grade european violins, you can see that clearly if you watch one video after the other, but for students violins these are awesome, and way better than a lot of crap sold by famous violin makers on the internet. And for people saying 'Mass-produced' are they kidding? Did you saw the video? This is artisan craft in what looks to be a very peaceful village in China, not a ugly massive industry. Sure, chinese-made instruments aren't the best, they aren't meant to be, hence their price. The majority of my instruments(All costing around $100) came from china and they've all played well in concert settings. I think if you're a good enough player and have a proper setup, the sound quality can live up nearly to that of expensive instruments.

Sounds like a bunch of snobs here. These are less expensive and one can simply order ebony accessories and fingerboard and you end up with a great violin. It allows the hardworking population to enjoy one. A mass produced but handmade violin..the man making it has made many and his hands know it as a reflex. I bet the maker even has his own projects of seeing how different woods would sound like any human with a beating heart would! In a hundred years there's going to be a few a these still around and maybe then they will get some earned respect.

There is a lot of magical thinking, I believe, with regards to what makes a quality instrument. There have been side-by-side, blind, comparisons between modern instruments and those made by the old Italian masters. And the experts are tricked! For reasonable prices, the Chinese are making the best instruments today. Eurocentric snobs can take their retirement funds and go buy a "good" instrument, if they wish.

I just purchased a Song "pie crust" style violin. Nothing wrong with it. Violin snobs tend to be dufuses who don't know that the Cremonese instruments vanished completely in the 1830's-1850''s and were gutted and butchered to sound like the "modern" violin of the day, that the sound of the old violins was deemed inferior and undesirable. To make matters worse, the luthiers at the time kept moving the goal-posts, to the point that identifying the sound of a "great" violin was as elusive as nailing a fart to the wall. To make matters even more confusing, no Cremonese fiddle has ever won a double-blind contest or taken top spot. The top violins are always, invariably, new instruments made by little-known luthiers, and this has been true going on 200 years. But there's no changing the minds of or educating those that drank the Kool-ade. Those fancied as the top experts tend to be the most dogmatic and least educated.

True! (for most part) I own a brazilian cello made in 1996 that sounds wonderful. I just ordered another cello from a local luthier that has only made a few violins, a couple violas, and one viola d'amore. The thing is all of those he made sound great. His latest viola sounds like chocolate. This will be the first cello he makes all by himself, and I'm confident it will sound amazing. He has worked on other shops for many years and has his own for 10. He is a very talented guy, great attention to details, but not very known yet. Having said all that, there are old cellos that do sound wonderful. I've heard at least three Guarneri's and one Testore on concerts and in classes. They are all powerful instruments, specially the Testore sounds big. Yet, I don't think my own instrument lags behind by much at all. In one class Pieter Wispelwey played my cello and was impressed. I was too! When he played my own instrument, I honestly thought it sounded better than his million-dollar machine lol. So what I lack are the skills to play like him.

Thank you LiliyaPanina. It was a pleasure to film and edit. Violins made in China are more handmade than most European violins these days. Chinese violin makers are very skilled at what they do and I found it interesting that in each room there were people specialising in one part of the instrument; my hat goes off to them! We are however starting to make our own instruments in Australia in order to reduce lead times, storage space, to have more control over the process and potentially experiment with Australian wood and customizations. Follow us on FB if you're interested: facebook.com/glanvilleandco. We've only made test models as yet but are hoping to start selling around June this year :) Cheers, Libby Glanville

I do not care how good or bad these cheap violins sound! The most important thing is how standard/good they are setup... E.g. the height of the bridge...correct curve of the bridge...sound post position and angle and exact size and length of the fingerboard..... I started playing the violin 20 years ago with one cheap Chinese violin....it was soooooo bad set-up that I had a few years of frustration.,....nothing worked no matter how hard I did practice it... no technique would work on that violin...the bow was a joke... that was my first 5 years... until I could save up and buy an old rusty german made violin for a bit of money... man...the difference was Lada vs 911

Hi there, not sure if they are available in India. We have them shipped to Australia, but I'm assuming there are probably shops in America that also stock them. It is quite common for violin shops to import instruments from Chinese workshops and then put their own 'home brand' on them. The 'home brand' would normally have a european sounding name.

Very impressive, I believe that in the upcoming century, Chinese violins will be the most desired the world over. I have an Eastman Strings violin that is simply gorgeous and fantastic. I agree. The best instruments I've bought have been Chinese. The good thing (for us) is that Chinese instruments are looked down on, which keeps prices low. A $200 Chinese instrument can go toe-to-toe with a $1000 European, and, often, look, sound and feel better.

Brian Ricciardi Hi, and its even kind of funny how many other countries are buying whats called I think, "white" or unfinished violins made in China, and shipped, then given the finishing touches in other countries, then claimed or given credit for having been made in that country. Another thing, from what I have heard, it's reputed that China has an almost unlimited supply of fine wood to make instruments from. Its understandable that in most other countries in the world, the best woods have been picked clean many decades ago, and finding anything worthy of a really good wood to make a fine violin is almost next to impossible. But overall I think the real important thing and perhaps the most under rated is the pride that the Chinese do take in their workmanship. And what you said, the more better or higher end Chinese violins look simply gorgeous, wow! , is really the only way to describe them.

That fingerboard is not ebony for sure because is not naturally black...they use different wood and paint it black to make it look like ebony. They are making cheap VSO(Violin Shaped Object). The worst part is that using cheap wood etc the violin usually breaks in few months and to repair and make it playable again is more expensive than buying a good quality student level violin. If you really want a good violin just go to a store that specializes in violins. They don't sell this kinds of violins they sell good violins. But they are not cheap usually $500 and above.

All too often, I was impressed by the sound and playability of the cheap imports and unimpressed by name brands costing thousands of dollars. These instruments are also an excellent choice for school districts on a budget to keep their music programs alive.

***** 1:16 shows that the back of the instrument doesn't have the proper grain alignment. The front of the instrument should have the grain going from tailpiece to scroll, while the grain on the back should go from f-hole to f-hole(crosswise). And in the beginning, when the man uses a hammer, of all things, to set the ribs in place? I cringed.

Thank God for the age that we live in, the fact that now we are able to mass produce such a difficult instrument to make...but one problem I have with this is that there's no love, there's no emotion with every stroke. I've seen a lot of violin makers make violins and they put emotion on everything, every detail has its own story. It's sad that these violins are not being a part of that.

Well, those are cheap copy BUT they are still partly handmade.I thought they made them on CNC machines.At least they make F holes and purfling by hand.Anyway, you can clearly see all shortcuts and cost savings.-WOOD is not individually selected- CORNER BLOCKS are probably missing - LININGS probably missing as well- FRONT and REAR PLATES are probably not tuned and thickness is not individually adjusted-BASS BAR is probably not individually adjusted-VARNISH seems to be synthetic replacement and will be rather THICK -POLISHING - is made on machine-SOUND POST - will be probably wrongly inserted and not adjusted-STRINGS - will be the cheapest trash-BRIDGE - will be inferior quality and not properly adjustedIf you count all those "defects' together, the result will be probably very bad quality violin with terrible sound.But they make thousands of them so if you are lucky enough, you can put your hands on good sounding ones.Or you can try to fix all the problems on your own.

My first violin I got when I was younger was made in China and honestly it was so crappy. They didn’t even check the bridge it was way to high up they could have at least carved it down. The chin rest was poorly put on it fell off a couple of times. Plus the fine tuners were so hard to move I don’t understand. They don’t even let the wood age at least a year and the quality sounds so bad. It was a meadow violin I don’t know about anybody else but idk violins made in China aren’t really the greatest

These Chinese instruments are still a major leap ahead compared to the student models of yesteryear. With a good set-up and a quality set of strings, these cheap imports can be made to sound pretty decent. This can be accomplished with the money saved on the instrument purchase in the first place, fitting comfortably into most beginning students' budgets. I must admit that the strings that come on these instruments from the factory are usually the very cheapest and the string action is sometimes too high, but these problems can be easily corrected by a competent repairman for a very reasonable fee. These instruments are also a viable option for school districts on a budget that need to equip their music programs for a minimal price.

450 seems quite a lot, my first half size violin was 160 dollars and I have seen new instruments for around 80 dollars. I am in the UK though so that might affect the price a bit. The 160 dollar model was perfect as it allowed a large number of us to try violin playing, and without them I probably would not have become a violinist. Plus, at the time I could not tell a good violin from a bad one so it did not matter to me about sound quality. I am glad to have moved up to a nicer instrument though.
@maverickdallas100
@maverickdallas100 9 жыл бұрын
Aspiring students with limited resources are thankful that functional and decent-sounding instruments can be built in this manner...many can be had for less than $150. Plus you can always upgrade as you advance your musical skills and as your budget allows, or decide later on to give it up altogether without taking a huge loss on your initial investment. If you can afford megabux for a fine Italian violin like a Strad or a Guarnieri, by all means buy it!

+maremontilago Sorry, the world is now practical. Many of us can't buy violins for its name. An average violinist playing a $10k violin will always sound inferior to a good/advance violinist with a decent china made violin.

Yes, they are not as good as fully handmade violins, but they are working honest jobs and its also good that they are producing violins, that way if someone wants to learn violin they can but a cheap 50$ violin on amazon made by these people, without having to spend thousands and thousands of dollars buying a fully handmade ones, and say for example if these workshops never existed, and someone spends thousands of dollars buying a violin, and they don't want to keep playing, they just wasted thousands of dollars! Yes you can resell them, but if nobody wants it, they lower the price until they end up losing tons of money. The quality might not be the best but you have to imagine what would happen if these workshops didn't exist, more people with no jobs, money getting wasted, we can't close these shops down, they are still honest people working honest jobs.

I'm sure 500 year violins had worse quality and sound than those chinese violins, but that times the violins were still considered useful music instruments. People become arrogant about music instruments when such instruments become rare art pieces rather than music instruments. I would forget about an instrument as piece of art and appreciate sound first. Some Stradivari violins are garbage now, they are useless as music instruments, but they still have history and high price. This is ridiculous.
