Composer: Giovanni Battista Viotti
Artists: Viotti String Quartet
Having recorded the only complete set of Viotti’s violin concertos (on 10CD), Franco Mezzena may be counted the foremost modern exponent of an unjustly overlooked composer. Born the year before Mozart in 1755, Giovanni Battista Viotti has been eclipsed by his Salzburg contemporary - for who would not be? Yet Viotti wrote so much more than display vehicles for the instrument of which he was the pre-eminent Italian virtuoso of his generation. He composed quartets throughout his eventful career, which included a brief period as a wine merchant. The agreeable, undemanding idiom of his quartet-writing reveals not only his own fondness for music that he and his friends and pupils could play together privately, but also the growing tendency to make the concert repertoire available to amateur musicians in their own homes.

Ignorance is not supposed to be bliss, but the chance to be given (another!) unexpected joy, in learning of new works by a previously unknown-to-me composer, by Brilliant Classics, this is, at least, a great compensation for missing wonderful stuff previously missed. Really fine playing of these pieces, too. The works are indeed "light," joyful, but in no way shallow, or without a fullness of emotion. Thanks to all.

IGNORANCE IS BLISS By Patrick Bens Ignorants know everything Therefor ignorance is bliss. Knowledge is really something You must at all cost dismiss. There are no rules to follow Therefor ignorance is bliss Their leader needs naught to know; Throws science into the abyss. To give his lot a booster He climbs with preacher's allure, Proudly crowing as a rooster On top of a pile of manure. Knowledge is a fantasy To which he can add onto Whatever is his fancy And he can do it pronto. He doesn't have to know too much Only that mindlessness feeds On itself and needs to clutch Onto those with greatest needs. There's no limit to his dreams Therefor ignorance is bliss Each exaggeration seems To persuade that he’s a wiz. His repeated use of lies Make believers of them all. It's easy to idolize When your eye's off the ball Dummies have nothing to lose And everything to go for There's plenty for them to chose From and they'll still fool you more. Politicians need the masses And preachers know that best of all Therefor are they getting passes To herd them all and enthrall. It's shocking to see them win But if education is According to them a sin, Then yeah, ignorance is bliss.

Anyone that knows anything about violin knows Viotti 22 already, it was a favorite of Brahms. I think it's the greatest concerto before Paganini and Beethoven, surely must have been influential to anyone that came later. It's great to hear more from this master, a treat for a repertoire junkie like me always looking new music I've never heard before. How many times can you hear the standard literature played over and over?

Specifically, they are musical classifications, are they not?{{e.g., the 1st "2" could indicate a certain "Quartetto concertante"?)...And, is this "Viotti 22" contained in THIS selection here that" I'm listening to now?... Any guidance you might give is hugely appreciated!! :-))....

A composer with a space Melody. And the performer returns me, listening to the composer's work, to the space from which the Music was copied. Therefore, Performers are 50% of the Composer's entire work. He is on an equal footing with the Composer. Only with both working it is executed perfectly. The Viatti performance is an example of this.It sounds like a play of light and shadow in the crown of a tree under the influence of the Wind. The musicians bring me back to where the Music was copied from, and at the same time, how it is done. Thanks so much!!!

Nuanced with many flourishes and changes, the music is really subtle. The listener feels lighthearted and perpetually amazed at how much music Viotti could produce with just a single key and 4 instruments. It's classical music at its height for sure; however, sometimes there tend to be hesitation and moments you hope linger but don't, as if the composer were in a hurry, when, it would've been better to have stayed.

Viotti (1755-1824) was an Italian violinist and composer, he is considered one of the fathers of modern violin technique. But he has nothing to do with baroque music. (Typical composers of this time: JS Bach, Buxtehude, Purcell, Lully, Vivaldi and many others). Please compare. - With kind regards.

@@angusspencer627 No! - Baroque music, also known as the thorough-bass age, is a period in Western art music that follows on from Renaissance music and extends from the beginning of the 17th century to around the middle of the 18th century. The beginning of the musical Baroque period is marked by the introduction of the basso continuo in the compositions of Claudio Monteverdi. The use of the continuo * thorough-bass * characterizes Baroque music as well as the music of the following transitional period, the Rococo. A possible further subdivision, which can however only be considered approximate, is Early Baroque (about 1600 to 1650), under Italian dominance; High Baroque (about 1650 to 1710), with significant French influences; Late Baroque (about 1710 to 1750), with a tendency to unify regional styles. Please continue your studies and do not engage in pointless discussions. All the best!

@@KeyboredCoward Thank-you so much to your reply ! Japan is cherry blossoms in full bloom everywhere , but all banquet under the cherry blossoms in full bloom having gorgeous Bento , delicious foods , treats and drinks is self - restraint this year . It is a very pity that we just watch cherry blossoms in full bloom . Japan , especially Tokyo is cruel and hustle and bustle with Coronavirus infection problem . How is your country ? Don't be careless . It is a very dangerous act that you think that only yourself will not be infected and go out frequently and meet a large number of people or at small , narrow place . We become the feeling that totally shifts to the world of 「 La Peste 」 of Albert Camus . Just talking is infected . Take care of yourself Good luck !

On Amazon a reviewer of this set mentions the cavernous reverb that saturates these recordings, and I have to agree. Too reverberant for what is meant as intimate chamber music. This sounds like it was recorded in a large empty hall with the microphones places several yards away from the players. But aside from that the music and the playing are very beautiful. I can live with the reverb, considering the lovely, mellifluous music. I am glad Viotti has been rediscovered and I will bet that sooner or later other ensembles will record these gems, and hopefully with a more intimate microphone placement.

I think we have to adapt our listening to this new art form, the YT classical music video, where a visual element is added, where the audience is interactive with each other without disturbing the performance, & where artifacts of audio engineering & videography are part of the whole. Personally, as I listen, I can agree that one may, traditionally, bring mic's closer, etc. However, again, just my ear, I do not in this instance find any degradation in the effect of this music, in this performance - & I think "reverb" is a bit of rock-&-roll exaggeration, in any case. Actually, I think this performance fills your implied larger/empty/cavernous space convincingly. We all have our favorite choices of tempo, dynamics, & improvisation (ornament, cadences, etc.); the technological factors will vary similarly, to everyone's taste, one may suppose?

@@michaeldavidrubin3964 I have to agree. All the variables of performance and recording are not always going to be to an individual's taste. I bought this set and have listened to two discs of it and I have grown accustomed to the reverberation in the recording. (My term "reverb" is not meant to conjure rock-n-roll terminology, it's just a shortening of "reverberation".) Speaking of recordings, with classical music in general I find that I always always prefer the first recording I've heard (and own) of a given piece. For example, I love the Martin Galling version of the French Suites of Bach, which he plays on a robust "revival" harpsichord with precise rhythmic execution and generally moderate tempos. So every version I've heard of those pieces sound either watered-down, or too rhythmically loose, or too fast or too slow, or the ornamentation sounds off, etc. etc. That's why I never liked Bach's music as performed by Glenn Gould, who often takes the tempos as breakneck speed. Also his off-key vocalise is annoying.

@@tomfurgas2844 Hi, Tom - your thoughts appreciated; intelligent views add to experiencing the music. My particular "1st time" sacred recordings include monaural vinyl disks of Reginald Kell performing Mozart Clarinet conc., & guitarist Narciso Yepes' Bach Chaconne Dm, + some others. Oddly, I love Glenn Gould & András Schiff, will listen to anything they play, even while generally preferring harpsichord keyboard works. Oddly, too, I suppose, the unmusical sounds emitted by performers, within reason, actually increase my sense of present-at-the-performance. My ballerina soloist Mama raised me backstage, so to speak, where the thud of delicate women en pointe was part of the most lyrical ballets. Think, too, of being in the concert/recital halls - have we ever experienced live performance without some untoward sight or sound from performers or audience? Hardly keeps us from buying tickets, not so? :)

The very first quartet in the video (catalogue number W 2.15) is in G, not in Gb (that would be way too exotic and I'd expect F# notation for string ensemble instead of Gb).
