The year is 1988. Chrysler is getting pummeled by Ford and GM in sales, and the company’s lineup of cars weren’t inspiring consumer excitement. They needed a new, exciting car - and fast. Company VP Bob Lutz was driving to work in his 1985 Shelby Cobra when it hit him. The Cobra was exactly the kind of car Chrysler needed to add to its repertoire. So Bob put together a team, gave them a three-point directive, and the rest, as they say, is history. The result of Bob’s efforts was the iconic Dodge Viper. How did Lamborghini help Chrysler build an engine for a corvette-killer? Does a car need windows to sell? And was the Dodge Viper almost the final nail in Chrysler’s coffin? Today on Past Gas: the story of the development of the Dodge Viper.

Fun Fact: The failure of a Mid Engine Viper gave rise to the Ford GT. In that mid-2000's, Chris Theodore was the Chrysler General Manager of the small car platform for Chrysler engineering and was the man who the Viper team reported to. The story started in the mid-1990s when the Viper was the Dodge halo car. Theodore says that some of the execs at Chrysler had Corvette envy, and Chevy had tried a few times to build a mid-engine Vette. That envy meant that Chrysler kicked off a packaging study for a mid-engine Viper in May 1996 with Roy Sjoberg as the chief engineer. Due budget constraints and some folks on the Viper team were averse to the mid-engine idea: tradition. "I was dead set against this whole thing," Herb Helbig . "I’m an American hot rod guy and I thought this was not the right thing to do with our icon". Eventually, when Daimler-Benz purchased Chrysler in 1998, the project died altogether. Theodore eventually left Chrysler for a job with Ford noting that when he left Chrysler, he was still frustrated over not getting to do the mid-engine Viper. Theodor said that the Viper was a rip off of the Cobra and that Chrysler ripped off Ford’s heritage for the Viper Coupe, the thinking at Chrysler was that the GT40 was Ford’s best heritage and that the mid-engine Viper would be ripping off Ford’s best. He said the best place to build a new GT40 was at Ford and that Ford had tried many times to make a homage to that original iconic car, but the project was always canceled. Theodore eventually pitched the idea on a plane ride in 1999 as part of a team sent to close the deal where Ford purchased Volvo. He says that Former Ford CEO and president Jac Nasser, Richard Parry Jones, the former VP-Global Product Development, CTO, and head of Global R&D Operations, and the entire executive management team were on the flight and that when the GT40 idea was pitched, they all got excited and said “we need to do this.” That pitch led to the start of the modern GT40 and let Theodore finally fulfill his mid-engine sports car aspirations.

Another fun fact: Viper have also helped to create SLS AMG. Dodge was planning on making the next generation Viper, when Daimler came in to the deal. They also wanted to co-develop their own car. Then Dodge was hit by financial troubles, and Daimler took over the project and turned it into SLS AMG. There are some pics floating in the web of an early prototype, with mostly Viper parts and new front parts in development.

Fun fact. There WAS a V8 Viper. The Viper GTS was destroying competition in the early 2000s VLN Nurburgring racing series so they limited the engine capacity to 6.2L. The dominant team, Zakspeed then decided to PLUG up two of the cylinders to make it essentially a 6.2L "V8", even though the whole V10 was still under the hood. Needless to say it still destroyed 😎

The coolant bottle was from an old square Ram, I put one in my 95 S15 as I took the fender wells out so it would lay frame on airbags, the OEM coolant bottle was on the passenger side fender well and I worked at a Dodge dealership at the time.

Let's play a fun alternate reality game. Let's say that in the early aughts, they introduced a "base" Viper with the hemi V8, and then a mid tier with the 6.4 hemi version. Before you start screaming "V10!!" and throwing tomatoes, this isn't really too radical. The V10 was "above" the Corvette in price and performance. The V8 could've gone head to head with the Vette and others. These lower priced models would've allowed for a much broader audience and more sales. Perhaps, had this been done, the Viper might still be slithering today. Maybe, even after the V10 died, it'd still be around in Hellcat, Demon, etc. forms. Just a thought.
