The Edwardian / post-Edwardian drama, the old series of Upstairs Downstairs from the 1970s was done accurately because (a) the mothers of the writers Jean Marsh and Eileen Atkins had been in domestic service, and (b) Angela Baddeley, who played Mrs. Bridges, could read through the scripts and eliminate all the expressions which came into british English during the 1940s with the arrival of the Americans.

Hallie is right about presenting period drama. That's why my husband and I stopped buying the Downton Abbey DVDs. It's a 2010 political agenda (feminist/anti-empire) put back into 1912-1926. Also, some of the lexis / vocabulary chosen is just too modern for that time. Examples include 'chill pill' (2000s youth slang) and 'learning curve' (1990s corporate speak). Just ridiculous.
