The rise of antisemitism on college campuses is disturbing and threatening to Jewish students, faculty, and staff. Chairwoman of the House Education and the Workforce Committee Virginia Foxx (R-NC) joined Newsnation to discuss the Committee's recent action in opening a formal congressional investigation into elite schools after the widespread backlash against Harvard, University of Pennsylvania, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology presidents for their failure to strongly condemn the rampant antisemitism occurring on their campuses during a congressional hearing on December 5th.

She literally said, " One day they will hang us for what we have done". She was talking about her involvement in Radical Feminism & Social Justice. Hi, im a jew from isreal. The victims of the October 7 are not exclusively jews, they murdered Muslims,druze, Thai, chirstians, and everything else that was in their path. There is no context under which calls for genocide are tolerable under "free speech" anywhere. Not in public discourse and certainly not on university campuses. The university Presidents gave a clear and concise answer, just in academese. What they mean by “context” is that it is a violation of their code of conduct for a white conservative or right wing person to call for the genocide of Jews, but it is not a violation of their code of conduct for a minority or Muslim or left wing person to call for the genocide of Jews. It is literally a war crime that one can be prosecuted for in an international court of law to call for genocide. This is not a free speech issue, your speech is always limited to what is not a criminal act. For them to say that some of their students can commit war crimes freely on their campuses and it is not a violation of their code of conduct to commit a criminal act one might face serious punishment for in an international court is as far beyond the pale as one can go.

tribalypredisposed: Thank you. I understood this to be a war crime in international law - at the least incitement to violence (also a crime, in my country and several others). I had wondered about this. If these three "presidents" did not want to deal with harassment / bullying protocols, why were agents of the law (police) not called in to arrest the instigators? Does international law not apply in America? PS the actions committed by Hamas terrorists on October 7th are also war crimes - according to international criminal law. This is beyond question or doubt. Whatever the Israelis are doing in Gaza at present has yet to be proved to subsume war crimes (in accordance with the protocols of the conducting of a war). One can gather evidence but no one can have an absolute answer to that, at present (i.e., in law, not regarding personal feelings or opinions, of a humanitarian nature or otherwise).

Even if you take out international law, this was a flagrant incitement to violence, which oversteps our constitutional right to free speech. The same people would be quick to claim that saying a trans person is not the gender he or she claims to be, or that a certain Black person is a criminal is violence against all trans or Black people and demand swift, decisive action against the person who said it. A university president or chancellor, of all people in that setting, should be able to tell the difference between a criticism and an incitement to violence. This is the 'teachable moment' these administrators should be having, not just with students, but with faculty as well. It's sad that we have to come to this, but it shows we've taken a few steps back intellectually.

Their actions were abhorrent and they should be terminated immediately. If what they said and stood by is accurate then those policies should be removed immediately and new ones implemented.

These colleges need their tax-exempt status taken away. As well as stopping all Federal funding. I believe that colleges should control the college loan program. No Government funding. Let them decide if their money should go to a student who will not, cannot paid it back. Would they be so fast to loan their own money to finance degrees that offer no future of employment?

I do not blame a donor for withdrawing support for an institution of higher learning that does not provide a safe and respectful environment. The codes of conduct of all private and public institutions of higher learning should be surveyed to ensure that groups will be treated with respect.

Since 1997 Qatar has donated more $103 million to Virginia Commonwealth university for a fine arts campus. What do you suppose they get for this "Gifting" ? From top to bottom they preach and teach what they are told. Since 2001 Qatar has donated $1.8 billion to Cornel for a medical school. Since 2003 Qatar has donated nearly $700 million to Texas A&M for an engineering campus. Since 2004 Qatar has donated $740 million to Carnegie Mellon University for a computer science campus. Since 2005 Qatar has donated $760 million to Georgetown University for a school of politics. Since 2008 Qatar has donated nearly $602 million to Northwestern University for a school of journalism.

Elite schools are elite in endowments, grounds, and equipment, but not necessarily elite in the independence and integrity of administration and faculty.

There are well-established limits on free speech. No lies, no libel, no provoking panic, no incitement to violence or crime. If, after a football game, a fratboy says "Let's trash some cars", then even if no cars burn, the Dean will give the lad a harsh talking-to. The Townies will _insist._
