Traveling southbound on the Fairfax County Parkway, a major through route serving Northern Virginia containing a mixture of crossroads, traffic lights, and interchanges, running from Virginia Primary State Route 7 southeast of Potomac Falls to US Route 1 east of Lorton, bypassing Northern Virginia towns such as Herndon / Reston and Fairfax. The Fairfax County Parkway is currently signed as Virginia Primary State Route 286. Until 2012, it was signed as Virginia Secondary State Route 7100. Virginia Primary State Route 289 serves as a northern spur of VA-286 heading to the heart of Springfield.
Virginia Route 286 was built in segments starting in the late '80s and finishing in the early '10s, starting with the segment from I-66 to Herndon. About half of this segment, the portion from Franklin Farm Road to Baron Cameron Avenue, uses the right-of-way of and runs along the exact same path that the Washington Outer Beltway was supposed to take (similar to Maryland's ICC / MD-200). The final segment was the short Fort Belvoir segment, which, with the exception of the VA-289 interchange, was built in its entirety to freeway standards.
In 2012, following the completion of the entire parkway, the Fairfax County Parkway was upgraded from a secondary state route to a primary state route. This resulted in the parkway being resigned from 7100 to 286. (The Franconia-Springfield Parkway, Fairfax County Parkway's northern spur, was also upgraded and consequently resigned from 7900 to 289.)
