M Graham's Viridian is really beautiful, dark and easy to rewet. Recommended.

I love viridian! At first I avoided because it’s expensive, weak tinting and hard to rewet but once I tried experimenting it I began to love it. I use W&N as my main palette but it’s too expensive where I live so I only have Holbein viridian. Holbein classifies it as series F and priced around double of series A. Mixing viridian with some colors can result split colors just like the expensive premixed tubes available in the market. For me, viridian and cobalt violet are my top 2 favorite paints.

I actually use Viridian a lot, it is much easier to control than PG7. It was the first Schmincke tube I bought, but I recently picked up a tube of M Graham and it is really wonderful. Pretty strong, and of course, pretty easy to rewet because of the honey. That being said, it’s just about the only MGraham paint I have that has set up in a pan.

That's the only M Graham paint I have that has actually set after pouring it into a pan too. LOL, love the honey based paints, the stickiness, not so much!

The Winsor & Newton one must be the weakest of them all, it a mere mist of green! My favourite is the QOR Viridian Green as it’s quite strong, like your Da Vinci version. I also like the Sennelier Viridian Green which is a PG7 and PG18 mix, it’s not as strong as PG7 and less granulating than PG18, so quite useful for most painting situations.

I think Schmincke have a PG18/PG7 mix too but call it something different. I remember it being quite nice too.

I love PG18! My favorite is M. Graham but the DaVinci is a close second and they both rewet better than others. The first one I tried was Schmincke, which is ok, if you add glycerine to the palette.

QI have a Daler Rowney viridian, very similar to the Schminke in tone, slightly more aqua than green, and weak because of the hardening issue, but still a likeable colour. I have the Schmincke as well, only just got it, and haven’t made up the swatch let alone used it! We shall see… I have mainly used my DR to indicate glass or water, I would not have the patience to water down pthalo, tbh, I find it far too overpowering, but great in deeper mixes… so I do value the pale and subtle one, it is very nice when introducing very light colour in a line drawing maybe an insect wing, something a bit ethereal. Maybe because the only one I used is hard to rewet I did not notice granulation. I am hoping the new version will be more interesting. The actual colour is more or less identical though. So interesting to see your last paint out… it gave a much more generous colour….

I have Viridian in the following brands: Karutake, Van Gogh and Schmincke Horadam. The first two came in pan sets, then about 6 months ago I was wondering whether to try a tube paint of Schmincke or Daniel Smith. I went for the Schmincke Horadam and it's gorgeous, I've found that it mixes some extraordinary muted tones with other paints. The other brands don't have that same effect. Kuretake is quite opaque really and the Van Gogh has far less intensity of pigment than Schmincke. UK watercolour painter Tim Wilmot has Viridian as his only green in his standard palette, which is another reason I got into it for mixing. Prior to that I was put off using it by reading about some artists not liking it for various reasons. Maybe the Daniel Smith Phthalo Green (Blue Shade) could do a similar job to Viridian. @Jay Nathan It would be nice to see comparison swatches to show how they mix with each of three primaries of your choice.

I too like Viridian. It's much softer than Phthalo Green. I use the one from W&N straight from the tube as it is hard to rewet when poured into a pan like many others.

I just swatched Schminkes' PG18 yesterday. It came in the Ultimate Mixing Set. I like that it granulates and isn't as harsh as PG7 (which I never liked). The Da Vinci PG18 looks nice too. But I love Da Vinci watercolors any way. 😁

I don’t need viridian green but there is something very appealing about buying a single pigment green. PG18 is a beautiful clean green. Have you ever used Jackman’s watercolors (not Jackson’s). It’s a British brand. I discovered it from Michele Webber’s YT channel. I just received some Jackman’s watercolors and they have a viridian green that I’m itching to acquire.

I wonder if your paper is tilted or flat. I have Winsor viridian and only seems to granulate when tilted. This happens with other colours as well so it would be interesting to know in which conditions are your swatches made :)

I like the DAVinci on your comparison. I only have DS viridian and it seems more saturated than the one you have and yes a bit harder to wet than other colors. Overall I like the pigment. I am drawn to DAVinci paints and I need more watercolor like I need a hole in my head, haha. Old saying.

I also think it is not essential in a basic palette but once you feel like advancing I recommend experimenting with viridian as you can create interesting textures when mixing with other colors.

Viridian is the more refined version. Its less staining, and is less likely to dry a hard edge... that its harder to rewet can make it harder to over do also a + in my book. It is often more expensive of course. The starter set viridian hues (the cotments ect) are almost always PG7 anyway.

@@JayNathanWatercolor I would second the request for a "common" mixes moment for at least some colours. This one as an example Viridian is so misunderstood, by even experienced painters. Highlighting a couple interesting uses you have found could be cool. Some of the shadow colours you can get with PG18 are fantastic. I believe its part of the 3 part mix DS uses for shadow violet. Which is ultramarine blue transparent pyrol orange and PG18.
