I love this game. The graphics are bright, colorful and clearly defined making high-speed racing super enjoyable. The handling, sounds and music also excellent. We miss you 90's Sega.

I must've spent 200USD playing this game when it came out. Back when it was the hottest game going, eight players could play it. The competition was fierce!.

I remember playing Virtua Racing in the arcade when it first came out. It was so advanced with the "new 3D polygon" graphics, and the active airbladders that simulated g-forces on turns. It really was innovative and revolutionary, and look at all the incredible polygon racers we have now that can only point to one game (Virtua Racing) as their roots, influence and history. And the game still stands the test of time, as an excellent racer. Thank you SEGA.

If I recall, the extra tracks on the PS2 version are from Virtua Formula, the arcade sequel to Virtua Racing. Also I swear the 32X Desert track is also used in Daytona USA Championship Editon on the Saturn.
@Jenovi
@Jenovi 6 жыл бұрын
As far as I know, Virtua Formula is Virtua Racing, but with recreated Formula One cockpits containing hydraulic movement, widescreen displays, and force feedback. That's not to say I've ever seen one, or even a basic V.R. cabinet, because I haven't... I mean, if I did, I would have to pick up a second job at Mc Ds to pay for all the play time I would dump into it. Anyways, I'm ashamed to say I've never played Daytona USA on the Saturn, even though I own a copy of it. Having had some time pass since doing this video, I can say without a doubt the Redbook audio soundtrack (40 tracks most under :30 seconds) included with "Time Warner Interactive's VR Virtua Racing" makes it a worthwhile purchase, even if the game has the misfortune of having one of the worst titles on the Saturn.

Those look great. I remember Sega GT, but don't recall ever playing or seeing Ferrari F355 Challenge. I'll be sure to pick it up and appreciate the recommendation. I have another video in the pipeline that in part looks at Super Monico GP II, so yeah, I like Sega racers.

Larry Bundy Jr I played Virtua Formula back in the day at the Trocadero in London but I dont remember seeing any extra tracks - I think it was just that you could link the machines up coz there were like 7 or 8 perhaps all lined up with everyone racing each other. What I do remember was there was a virtual commentator on separate screens called Virt McPolygon commenting on the races as they progressed. I thought it was so cool and had an awesome time playing that game, the buzz in that place was amazing!
@hybridvigga
@hybridvigga 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, there weren't any extra tracks in Virtua Formula, it was just bigger screens and fake F1 cockpits on the cabinet, and some slight texturing (with different shaded colours on each polygon, not an actual texture map) on the polygons so it looked a bit better than it did originally. And yeah, that extra desert track from the 32X version was definitely in Daytona on Dreamcast, not 100% sure about the Saturn Daytona CCE though its years since I got rid of my copy but it might have been. It's Larry, he's a legend, I'll take his word for it. I think the PS2 and Saturn extra tracks are all original to those versions though. And the Saturn version of it was awful, with a terrible PAL conversion and moved like it was in slow motion.

I recall buying the Saturn port of Virtua Racing when I bought my Saturn back in 95, and I recall thinking it was awesome, especially compared to the Genesis port. Now that I look back and consider your review, I see just how flawed it actually was.

Time Warner's Virtua Racing is being unfairly judged. It may not be the best port. But it looks pretty good in it's own right to me. Personally, I prefer the Mega Drive version for it's insane handling which makes it the most intense (and probably most difficult) experience.

Oh how Saturn VR disappointed me after playing 32X VRD for over a year. However, I do think it's a fairly fun racer in Career Mode, I came to enjoy playing it through over the years. The 10 laps aren't as big a problem once you move on to the fastest cars. But I hate how you spin out if you even graze another car. I have an issue with PS2 VR flatout, the car feels like it is sitting on a pole as you turn instead of actually feeling like you are making contact with the road. I haven't played it in quite a while though, should try it again soon.

Little sad there's no direct emulated copy of the arcade version legally available. That'd be awesome. Wish Sega'd put out a collection of some of their more classic 3D arcade games... Like, VR, VF1/2, VC... Surely there's others I am forgetting right now.

Great to rewatch your vids about Virtua Racing, it's such a wonderful game that is not always obvious / visible, that it's so great. The white knuckle gameplay only emerges if the player shoots for 1st place, which demands practically perfect gameplay throughout the whole race. Earlier this year, I put some free time into the 32x version and eventually got 1st in each track. I love Highland because it seems based on Estes Park, Colorado, which is the town at base of Rocky Mtn. National Park. (I think I"m going to eventually make a video about that, my pet theory that Highland is based on Estes Park.)

This is the absolute best channel on KZfaq today. Amazing work, thank you for the trip down memory lane. I have often wondered if the SVP chip could run a version of Doom on the Sega Genesis and how good it would be. Could they have done a better job than Doom on the Snes? I think yes, yes it could. The Genesis was a better all around built machine that could brute force effects the Snes needed extra hardware for. Couple this with the SVP chip that was stronger than the FX and the FX2 chips combined and you had something special...it really was a monster in its day. Compare the frame rates of Virtua Racing verse any FX powered game and the proof is in the pudding. The SVP chip was amazing! You guys are going to have to revise this video...the Switch has a version in Japan and one coming to the US soonish???? ;)

whats funny is this game wasnt suppose to come out, but another game was suppose to come out (i think Virtua Fighter), this was just a test game to see if the engine could handle it. for the testers and developers, the game was so much fun that Sega was convinced to go ahead and release the game into the arcades and the rest is history

I forgot that Virtua Racing on the Genesis cost $100 back when it was released. I recall renting it however and didn't feel that, although impressive, it was not worth the price. I did get a copy on the 32X when it came out and have very found memories playing all the tracks with all of the cars. About a year ago I got the Saturn version, and let's say you hit the nail on the head with that one. I played it for about an hour before I decided that if I needed a Virtua Racing fix, I'd play my 32X version. Great review on the series, I'm looking forward to your next upload! Keep up the great work!

Ha, that's awesome. Thanks for sharing that memory with me. I remember games being priced all over the place growing up and mostly avoiding the real expensive ones. I was saving up for the Genesis Virtua Racing release then learned the 32X was just around the corner. At launch, I had saved enough from working after school to get the 32X and every launch title. I felt then as I still do that it was a better investment over the Genesis port.

This is a great review and I agree with almost all your points, but I noticed one issue you might wanna be careful of in future cuddles, the aspect ratio is wrong for all the footage except the Arcade game. The arcade version ran in 4:3 in most configurations but does support 16:9 mode in Deluxe cabs, and both the Mega Drive and 32X games run in a letterboxed 16:10 mode, Saturn and Flat Out! both run in 4:3 mode. In your video, everything except the arcade footage (which was perfect for the 4:3 mode) seems to be squished down to 8:7 or something like that and it makes everything look quite skinny. Other than that though, this was a really good video and I enjoyed it. Also, the Saturn used the same dual SH2s as the 32X but they ran at a much higher clock speed, and the Saturn had two VDPs and many other chips.
@Jenovi
@Jenovi 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. Unfortunately, there's a series of early videos where the aspect ratio is messed up. I didn't realize this was happening until it was pointed out a few videos into the problem. The final video with the problem is Stellar Assault, though I did reedit it and corrected the problem, so if you watch it, make sure it's the corrected one. It's in two parts where as the original was one video. One final note, I would have corrected this one, but was holding out for the switch release and just remade the entire thing.

What we really need is a Gran Turismo or Forza style 'CarPG' game using ONLY the Sega developed original tracks from all their old arcade style racers instead of all the identikit versions of Laguna Seca and Silverstone over and over again across hundreds of different racing games. You know, the tracks from all the different versions of Vritua Racing, Daytona, Daytona 2, Sega Touring Cars, Sega GT (Dreamcast AND X-Box versions), Scud Race, Sega Rally and its sequels, Indy 500 etc... That would be epic.

Two semi related things: Virtua Tennis on the Dreamcast is a GREAT game, and it's a huge shame there was no Virtua Racing on the Dreamcast. Secondly, the PS2 version is quite puzzling. If you're going to redo a version of Virtua Racing, why wouldn't you choose to remake the version with the most content? What's the point of an updated version of a game that has... LESS content?

I'm getting more interested in checking out the 32X, at least for this game and maybe a few others, but it seems I missed the boat on getting one at a decent price. Unless I'm nuts I think they used to be a lot cheaper a few years ago. Now they cost serious money which I can't handle right now. Interesting video, I didn't know about the Saturn version. I'm really confused that Sega licensed this game off to Time Warner/Atari instead of keeping control and making the Saturn version themselves. I'd have thought they'd have seen this as an important game to have as a quality member of the Saturn's launch lineup, even if it was an older game by then. Flat shaded polygons still look good as long as the rendering is clean and smooth. In my opinion, the trouble with early 3D is when you get into games with blocky textures, tons of aliasing made worse by low resolution, and a skimpy Z-buffer. It's not the poly count that's the problem, it's the highly aliased and flickery jitteriness that makes early 3D look nasty. When nicely rendered, flat shaded low polys look good.

Thank you for the comment. 32X stuff is certainly on the rise, though not out of reach, yet. Also, if you have the system, you can use a Mega SD of Mega Ever Driver to play games. The library as a whole is well above average compared to the whole of other systems. I also think there are a number of standout titles. I think the Time Warner deal had something to do with their support of the 32X. It's really hard to say though. All in all, I agree with your opinion of Flat Shaded Polygons having a timeless look.

Loved the video, one thing I think the arcade has that the 32x doesn't (apart from graphics ofc) is the analog steering, unless there's a genesis steering wheel that works with the game (which I can't find). That may be a big drawback for some. Still, the 32x version sure is good.

I thought the Saturn had 2 SH4 Hitachi processors while the 32X had 2 SH2 Hitachi processors... I know this video talks about Virtua Racing is a better game on the 32X, I still think Sega should have went with the SVP powered games. It wpuld have kept the fan base together and could have really made games pop in the long run. Can you imagine SVP powered Mortal Kombat 2 carts or SVP styled Street Fighter...we would have bought them even at 100 a pop. I can only imagine Virtua Fighter running competently on a Genesis in '94...game over Nintendo, game over.

32X and Saturn = SH-2 Dreamcast and Naomi = SH-4. Honestly, I would have been happy to have more SVP powered games. It's a shame we only got Virtua Racing.

You should review the Switch version of Virtua Racing! That's the version I'm gonna get. I even have a steering wheel and pedals that are compatible with the Switch, via the Magic-NS, so I'll get the closest arcade experience possible! I just don't know why Sega loves releasing their Sega Ages games far later than their Japanese release...

Jenovi I think I prefer the 32x version. The engine noise does go right through me but I think it plays better. Still like the PS2 version but the driving doesn’t seem as fun. It feels a little slower to me which ruins the intensity.

Flat Out looks great but handles nothing like the arcade, which totally ruins it IMO. MAME emulation is the best thing except it suffers from a nasty issue at times where you hit an invisible car.

Surprised SEGA would let TimeWarner put out that version on the Saturn. TimeWarner is notorious for crap games, it goes back to when were just Warner Communications and they owned Atari Inc and they put out the garbage ET game to milk Atari fans.

+vh9network Thanks for checking out the video. My though on this is it was Sega repaying Atari for all the Support they gave the 32X and other Sega consoles. They were a much better company before the merger.

It’s a possibility, but it’s important to note that Atari/Time Warner Gave Sega a ton of support when others abandoned ship. It’s hard to say what the agreement was behind the scenes.

The genesis version is amazing on it's own, but it sucks when you play the 32x version right before. The frame rate on the genesis is pretty bad, but I've noticed the controls are a little better/different in some spots. The Saturn version is a joke. Really rushed it, while the 32x version is one of maybe 3 games on the 32x that don't feel rushed.

Great game but most ports suck even the Switch port is poor. I loved this game on arcade. When it arrived on mega drive I was well hyped for it but the game was a disappointment. Then when I 1st played the 32x version of the game I was blown away. It plays so close to the arcade. At this point I was thinking when they do a Saturn release it will be arcade perfect. (How wrong was i). What to say about Ps2 VR looks great plays not so great. The handling is way off it feels like the car has a nail through the middle of it an that's where it turns from. (Feels very odd). Finally the Switch which looks and sounds great but the camera does some strange things. It's like when you dab the accelerator how the camera moves it's like a glitch. Its very off putting. Unfortunately after all these years we are left with no arcade perfect port which is a massive shame. What would be great is the 32x game with Switch sound and graphics. ARE YOU LISTENING SEGA.

best porting is to MegaDrive(Genesis) for me. begause smoose response Exhaust sound better than PS2's. and driving feeling is nearly DXcabinet's it (inportance is only use 16:9 CRT,steering wheel with forcefeedback,G from side bag etc.) I haven't SegaSaturn console. FlatOut is no good for me. because can't set to 16:9,position display is having bug in pitstart playing big forest, no smoose response exhaust sound less than MD's,over using breaking SE while every steering to loud,etc.
