Sparky is your guide for a birding and photography video day in the snowy landscape of an October day in northern Minnesota's Sax-Zim Bog. A rare (for Minnesota) Mountain Bluebird is seen, as well as a very late Palm Warbler. We drop by Mary Lou's amazing feeders to see if the Evening Grosbeaks are around...and we check out her photo blind. Sparky will also take us to the Friends of Sax-Zim Bog's newest preserved land...41 acres on the Whiteface River called Wood Thrush Woods. We also take a loop on the newly-completed Bob Russell Bogwalk.

@@SparkyStensaas Never, it's a dream to get there one day!! i'm an addict birder and bird/portrait drawer. It doesn't look like i'm going to get there anytime soon :D #COVID. A minor issue compared to lots of people getting sick and die. we hope to go to scandinavia again next year where great grays and rustic buntings etc... are spectacular as well as the nordic landscape, comparable to zax sim bog and old boreal forests, my favorite!

We saw our very first black-backed woodpecker, while camping in a state forest campground in Itasca county. So exciting. George Washington state forest.

Yes Myles! Canon R5 with Canon 100-500mm RF and Canon 24-70 f4. This is the holy grail set up for me… Especially for video. I can now shoot handheld video due to the IBIS....with animal-eye autofocus! Even with a 2x extender! I can also shoot 8K and crop in and shoot 4K 120 frames per second super slow motion. My dream! Still getting used to it and getting the right setting.

These videos are so great! Thanks for sharing! You mentioned that recent sightings would be posted on the website on Thursdays. When will that begin? Headed up this weekend but will just bird on Friday. (Don't want to be mistook for a deer on opening weekend!)

Hi Patrick, We Will begin the wildlife reports probably after Thanksgiving. As you probably know we had to take the feeders down at the welcome center due to a black bear. Mary Lou‘s feeders are active and worth a visit in the morning. Have a great trip!

Hey Sparky, is there anywhere there, or nearby that a person could boondock with a very small camper(an aliner) 15' ? Just occurred to me to ask.

I don’t think so. There is a campground on the Cloquet River near independence Minnesota.
