This may seem like a trivial thing to have on a boat, but I can tell you it has been invaluable on the crossing! With each of the four of us getting up at different times, being able to quickly and easily make our favorite drink in just about any sea state has made starting our watches so much nicer.
It does require frequent emptying of the drip tray and filling of the water vessel, but it does self clean each time it is turned off.
We’ve had this since just after moving to South Africa and we really have enjoyed it, and as mentioned in the video, guests have been really impressed with the quality of the coffee and ease in making it.
The reason we chose the Philips is because it had one of the highest pressures to extract the coffee and because of how it uses milk. As shown, it uses a straw system, so we can just stick that into a carton of milk instead of filling a special container that comes with other brands of machines. Because our fridge is small, we felt it important to not have another “thing” to put in the fridge.

Thanks so much for sharing info of your Vision 444 journey✨🇦🇺 👉5 Qs for you to respond to sometime: 1. What have you done to manage lightning risk? 2. What tender did you end up choosing and why? 3. Do you have leisure space on the coachroof, or is it solar only? 4. Did you choose a furling boom? If not, why not? 5. Who's the guitarist?

Ditto to question 5. Are you meeting up with Jimmy buffet?

Let me answer this one (#5) since it’s the easiest. Our captain, Garon, is an accomplished guitarist. Sue and I bought a nice Yamaha guitar in South Africa and are learning.

1) Nothing inherent in the boat. Radar and trying to avoid squalls mainly. It’s very difficult to do something that you know will be effective (meaning just adding cost and weight without knowing it it will help) 2) SeaSUV 360. Brand new design by James Turner and built by another company in Knysna. We have Hull #2. It is bad ass. Full carbon fiber, can comfortable and drily seat 8, top speed of 30 knts with Sue and I. Expect videos to come on that soon. 3) A little, mainly just under the boom. You could probably find room for 4 people to lay out, but we won’t be playing any badminton :) 4) We did not for a couple of reasons. If you go with the hayrack boom instead , the mast height is ICW compliant with no change in sail area. The boom also gets lower and easier to access and honestly a lot less complicated. It also saved us $30k which we put toward the halyard locks and Karver reef hooks, which are super cool pieces of kit! Video to come on these too. 5) See the other reply. We always wanted to learn and 40 days looking for things to do seemed like a good time :-)

Hey Mike and Sue: 2-3 questions! What was that website that allows me to track your progress each hour? How do you guys get enough exercise etc. since the boat doesn't have much of a jogging path. And last, what's the next stop after St. Helena? Love the daily videos and wishing you guys plenty of safe winds. Oh, one final one: do you sail at night?

Hi Gary! You can track us at tracking.OnANewTack.com. Exercise is limited to constantly adjusting ones stance. Sue and I also have gotten j to a routine of sit-ups, push-ups, pull-ups, planks, squats and have some resistance bands too. Nothing that can get the heart rate up, although I guess we could run in place, high-knees, jumping jacks etc. When we are not crossing, we bike, paddle board, swim, hike, etc. We never stop sailing on a passage, unless the winds got so high that we had to go “bare poles”. After St Helena we will sail to Grenada; that’s the big trip. This one will be about ten days, that one will be about 24. Right now, the ocean below us is about 4700 meters deep, so no other option. We have 4 crew and we do 2 3 hour shifts per day.

Do you have any other crew on this trip? Maybe a video sometime talking about watch schedule?

We do; there are four of us. Great idea for another video. Thank you!

Mike, what is the minimum size crew to always be under sail? Seems like it has to be 3-4 folks. Also, how%where do you store enough food for the long leg to Granada? Stay safe!
