We travel with a Microsoft Surface everywhere we go. I edit my videos on it & use it to backup my pictures and vides while we travel. It’s light and the best travel laptop on the market in my opinion.

NOTE TO AMERICANS: Whenever you pronounce words like 'Buckingham' and 'Nottingham'. If you want to sound less like a tourist, you don't pronounce 'ham' like the food. You would pronounce 'Buckingham', (bucking-um).

I`d like to add my 2-penny worth here as well.Tourists, especially Americans, always get name places wrong. For example Edinburgh is pronounced ( EDIN-BURRA ) NOT Edinboro. There are NO "o`s ) in Edinburgh. It would be so nice to know that if someone is travelling a good 4000 Miles to at least make an effort to get it right but, even when its pointed out, they do it anyway.

*'Always get place names wrong'. Why do people say 'burra' if that's just a rough way of pronouncing 'borough' when 'borough' isn't part of the word? Shouldn't it be Edin-bruh?

To anyone thinking about visiting England (and I am a proud Englishman), do not just visit London as it does not reflect "England". Go to places like Oxford, York, The Lake District, Yorkshire, Cornwall, Devon, Bath and of course Suffolk (my home county). It pains me to say, Wales is also stunning, so make sure you visit this gem of a country.

Randothol H York and Bath where nice when I was there. The English are a funny lot, when I want to the viking museum in York the things found from when the viking/northmen where there where a shoe or a comb and the texts all spoke of the violent vikings then there was a coal layer and a very small short text explaining that was from when the Normans burnt the town. One might almost assume that it is the Normans that are writing the history down and or ruling England with some Saxon henchmen...

most criminals kind of realise it isn't worth the risk of getting caught with a gun as obviously it's more noticeable when a person has a gun in the UK vs the US and if you don't need to protect yourself from guys with guns you don't really need a gun.
@jackcarter6629
@jackcarter6629 7 жыл бұрын
Piers Jholden, if it's known somebody is carrying a gun, my money is on them being shot dead within 30 mins if minimal witnesses and a bit longer after they get bored asking the armed person to come out without weapons - and still shoot them. The Flying Squad doesn't fuck around, and SO19 are like special forces trained armed cops who always use Marksmen high up looking for the headshot. There is a new Police Unit currently being introduced, they are plain clothed officers and ARE ex-SAS and SBS, RM Commandos, etc. Trained with the sole objective of fighting crime. They are permanently armed. So that mugger in a street sooner or later will run into one. When the SAS stormed the Iranian Embassey in the 1980's, people barely knew who the SAS were. It's trhe same with this new Police Unit. At some point they're going to take down a major terrorist operation in a spectacular way and people will know they're about. This new Unit is being rolled out across Britain. Police are also being issued a new stun gun with a switch that can deliver a stun voltage AND a kill voltage. The next time you need a copper and they come to your aid free of charge, put themselves between you and harm - you stand there and think how stupid you think they are.

Full-time Londoner here - this is pretty accurate. Tbh I do wonder how many tourists come here and are actually a bit disappointed at how un-English London is, in the sense that they came here for a more English experience. London is really its own country. And it's great if you actually live here, because you can pretty much travel the world without having to leave the city.

Top Mistake tourist's make when visiting the UK, they spend most of their time in London. If you want to experience the UK then get out of London, public transport is quick and easy as you could travel to different cities within a few hours. And you would still save alot of money by doing this compared to staying in London. Spend a few days in different counties like the Midlands that have Leicester, Derby, Nottingham, Chesterfield, Matlock and the Peak District. Yorkshire for Sheffield, Leeds, York, Bridlington, Scarborough, Whitby, North Yorkshire Moors. Cornwall for St Ives, Penzance, Land's End. Scotland for Edinburgh, Glasgow etc. The whole of the UK is open to you in the same time it would take to look around London. And you would save alot more money.

jason owen the tourist areas of central London are indeed pricey, as most inner city tourist spots are, but venturing out to other beautiful locations within the city like Putney, Kingston and Twickenham, where you can enjoy a riverside cake or pasty from Greggs or go to Wetherspoons for a very cheaply priced meal, is a highly recommended strategy that will enable you to experience more of london than most tourists do! This relatively simple logic applies to most cities, but when you consider that most Londoners haven't visted anywhere near to all of the city, you realise that there is more to do here than even Wolter thinks there is

George Gaul I nearly ran over two cops in Notting Hill who were so busy talking to each other they just stepped out. When I realised they were carrying semi automatics I nearly freaked. I think they are supposed to make me feel reassured. They have the opposite effect on me, particularly considering their inattentiveness on this occasion.. Why on earth do you need a semi automatic amongst the crowds at Notting Hill Gate anyway? Use them and you can kill half a dozen innocent bystanders.

I guess it depends where in London. Trust me, as a local who has lived here for 24 years, there are certain neighbourhoods that are "no-go areas" after 9pm. Completly ruled by gangs and bandits. Those areas about 30-60 mins outside of the centre though, and no tourists go there. But as a toursit, you are right. It's usually very safe. And Central London is safe too. The biggest 2 crimes that tourist face are scams for money, or pick pocket thefts. But those aren't too common. If you are street wise, you can remain safe in the centre

My guess is you've never been or you wouldn't have said that! September 2016, toured DC, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Maryland, the USA is fantastic. Great people, great food, great cites, loved Baltimore despite the bad rap it gets over here and DC would put many European capitals to shame. Saw some stunning scenery and walked into bars with my wife and got chatting away to people like I had known them for years. The levels of hospitality are something the Americans are known for and despite what some Europeans like to think, they are genuine. I'm well travelled, including Africa, Asia and Australia and obviously mainland Europe being English, but going back to America in 2018! Love it!!

Dick: Obviously, you have a tendency to visit the downtown and more glamorous and established vicinities which tourists desire. This is all well and good, but what do you think of visiting the grassroots neighborhoods (the 'hood) of real life in the USA? Have you lived in certain cities in America, or are you just tourist based? Have you worked, and/or pursuing your schooling in the U.S? You had indicated that you are from England. Would you be comfortable living openly as an Englishman doing your everyday aspect of living; the mundane day-to-day tasks of life, taking and verbally communicating with everyday people in a dog-eat-dog, outwardly and obviously bias and less appreciative real people? If so, how were/are you treated then, were they any different from the accommodative appreciative souls of tourist? You should try *living* in the U. S: Try New York for starters!

You answered your own question about closing times for pubs. Pubs are not nightclubs. That's why nightclubs were invented. To have a place for people who want to continue into the night. When was the last time you saw a dancefloor in a pub? It's the same in Australia. Pubs are mainly daytime and early evening places to socialise.

Just to add to this if you go into smaller towns, especially ones without nightclubs or with an older population you'll find pubs closing later for instance in my home town we didn't have a nightclub but a lot of pubs closed around 1:30-2:00am

London is my favorite city, and I found all these things to be very true. The Tower of London is a must-see, and Notting Hill was the most fun neighborhood. The most amazing thing I saw in London was while biking through Hyde Park. I saw a bunch of horse trailers parked, and there was a large group of people with show horses all riding around in a big circle. Being a horse lover, I stopped the bike, parked myself on a park bench and just sat there mesmerized. It was like a dream, and I'll never forget that experience. If you haven't been to London, definitely put it on your list of places to see.

Parked taxi drivers are the guys to ask for directions and tourist places, it's a part of their job, it's one of the conditions for getting their license. The UK Police do not have "Machine Guns" or what you really mean, automatic weapons ... They are carbines which look like machine guns. The rest I agree with. Things missed out .... Ask a Londoner about directions and other stuff and you have a very high chance of being blanked, ignored like you're not there, not even looked at. Before visiting England for the first time and London, swot up on a little of the history because you cannot really walk up more than two streets without being in a spot with history, much of it with original buildings. For example check out what Westminster Palace was and not just what it is today.

Not necessarily true. Yes London is home to so every expensive shops, bars and restaurants, but it's quite possible to have a great time on a limited budget. Street food is everwhere, standards are high as is hygiene, and you can easily eat for less than £5. Loads of places have set pride menus, pre theatre menus, discounts etc. Getting around is affordable too, travel is capped at under £10 a day for central zones regardless of the number of journeys. Decent accommodation can be pricey, but there are thousands of airb&b in amazing locations that are much cheaper. And now the exchange rate for tourists is better then ever. I remember when $2 bought £1, now it's almost $1 to£1! Plus don't forget we don't add sales tax to ticket prices- the price you see is the price you pay.

China town is also a great place to go, for cheap food, close to town. But regarding public transport. Yes, it's cheaper than other places in the UK (Especially the railway). BUT compare that with prices like: 5 - 7,6€ for a 24h ticket in towns in Austria, or 3$ for a 24h ticket in New Orleans, etc. Any yes, you can get good prices on accommodation, if you travel at the right time.

Our police must be a major shock to all Americans, because 9/10 of them are all approachable and will assist you in however way they can and there's no imminent threat of being shot if things get out of hand.. We do however have authorised firearms officers equipped with body armour and SIG carbine rifles and glock 17 pistols who are the men you see at airports, tube stations and outside tourist hotspots and landmark destinations. We also have specialist firearms officers which are more sort of comparable to your FBI counter terrorist / special op police.

Re the cops and guns, just to clarify, the regular cops DO have armed units available even though the street officers don't carry individual weapons. They have 'armed response units' who drive around with an impressive selection of guns locked in a specially modified car, waiting for any call for help from the regular officers. The cops openly carrying 'machine guns' are usually special anti-terrorist police or some other similar unit.

@spencerwilton8876
@spencerwilton8876 8 жыл бұрын
+Sven Ekeberg the vast majority of us prefer it like that. Gun crime is very low on the whole, and the vast majority of gun offences are drug related or gang on gang. The ordinary person on the street has probably never seen or held a gun, and is statistically highly unlikely to ever see one used in anger or be threatened. Guns are so hard to come by that those in circulation amoungst criminals are often antiques. We have no desire to see guns made a greater part of everyday life than strictly necessary.

One thing that “shocked” me when I was in UK was lack of climate control in the summer and lack of ice in beverages. It’s just one of those American things I/we take for granted. So if it’s a hot day in June and you’re crammed amongst other sweaty tourists, you’re gonna have to go to a major chain store (Nike in London is where I took shelter lol) to cool off. Also Americans, keep an eye on your watch. Their daylight starts way earlier than ours in the summer and remains light out much longer. If you’re wondering why everything is closing so “early” it’s because it’s much later than you think it is.

If milk products don't help any more, go for strong alcoholic stuff. (And I don't mean cocktails or such stuff) 40% and more. Sounds crazy, I know, but it works!

I've been trawling KZfaq getting an American's perspective on the UK and I think this is among the best of the bunch :D As a Brit who doesn't live in London but has been loads of times during my 23 years, I whole heartedly agree with pretty much everything here :D Make me sorta proud of our small little Island :) Thank you!

A real good review (from a local). One thing about London is whilst it is culturally diverse, there is a strong sense of civic pride, and despite it being the main attraction for immigrants, it has changed actually less over the last decades than most of rural England. One of the best features is the parks, there plenty of large parks within the city and the suburbs, and the tube i.e. subway has an incredible character when it comes to Victorian and Art Deco engineering and architecture. Londoners, as with most English people are quite reserved, and sometimes rude, which could be a shock for Americans. Thank you for another great vlog!
