Great Big Story

Great Big Story

6 жыл бұрын

In Córdoba, Spain, the Mezquita stands as a house of many faiths, a site of religious significance for Catholics and Muslims alike. Originally dedicated to the Roman God, Janus, the temple was later transformed into a mosque as Córdoba came under Moorish rule. Nearly five hundred years later, as the town was conquered by Christians, the Mezquita was once more converted into a church. Four centuries later, a cathedral was constructed within the center of the structure, becoming a home for Córdoba’s practicing Roman Catholics. Today, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, millions of tourists flock from all over the world to tour the awe-inspiring artistry and Islamic architecture.

According to tradition, a small Visigoth church, the Catholic Basilica of Saint Vincent of Lérins, originally stood on site. In 784 Moors ordered construction of Great Mosque, which was considerably expanded by later Muslim rulers. Córdoba returned to Christian rule in 1236 during Reconquista, and building was converted back to Original Roman Catholic church, culminating in insertion of a Renaissance cathedral nave in the 16th century. Since early 2000s, Spanish Muslims have lobbied the Roman Catholic Church to allow them to pray in the cathedral.Muslim campaign rejected on multiple occasions, both by the church authorities in Spain and by the Vatican.

I believe the Visigoths adopted Arianism, not Catholicism. And prior to the construction of the Visgothic Church, it was the location of a pagan temple. According to some accounts, the site was shared by Christians and Muslims until it was purchased in its entirety by the Muslims and the Mosque was built in 785. I think all such sites that were used by both religions at some point should be open to worshippers of both faiths, which includes buildings such as the Hagia Sophia, among others. Accommodating Muslims in the Mezquita for Friday prayers wouldnt be to difficult as the Mosque portion is still in tact. It would send a positive message and facilitate good relation between the two faiths.

@@girdharsingh4287 My comment was about the CATHOLIC CHURCH that still stand there. IT IS indeed built in the middle of the complex, that's the reality. Now regarding your comment: When the Moors came, there were mainly 3 type of people there: The Goths (who ruled the land), the local Jews, and the local Catholics. When Moors managed to defeat the Goths, the Catholics and Jews were happy. There were no more Goths after that. For me It's only a matter of concern if it's a Catholic church, ie. still used by the catholic people of Andalusia.

You leave out that after it started as a Roman temple to Janus a Visigothic Christian cathedral was built on the site and after the Moors conquered that part of Spain they pulled it down and built the mosque using the materials on site and in the area, This was then expanded numerous times by Muslim rules until its present size in area.

Fortunately, those of us who read know that the first edifice on that site was a Christian cathedral. The invading Islamist built a mosque on top of the cathedral, and when they were driven out the cathedral was reclaimed. The idea that there is a cathedral within a mosque as if there was a mosque there and someone just came and built a cathedral inside it is an insult
@AAmed1980
@AAmed1980 2 жыл бұрын
It is believed to have been a Pagan temple prior to the construction of the Visigoth Church, which was a church not a cathedral. Muslims shared the site with Christian worshipers until purchasing the land and building the Musque in its place. However, there are those who believe, according to archeological evidence and historical documents, there was never a Church on the site.

It can be come a bit odd but why not.If they could do it why we can't do it now. It is really saddening to see how people's tolerance and ignorance gone sky high but acceptence gone rock bottom.

@@XxLIVRAxX As long as it has different places to pray I don't think it would be a problem rather it will make mingling two religions better. In the Hz. Mohammed times they were sharing the prayer house in different times as both mosque and church. Hagia sophia is a bit difficult since there are no separate sections but they can just let Christians in to pray in different time. If you want it to work it would work. Most of Turkish people despite being Muslim hated it that it became a mosque anyway.

@@exosproudmamabear558 The simbolism of trying to change the status quo of the building is problematic and quite frankly politically provocative. The place and its current use reflects the history of Cordoba, enticing some type of islamic zionism or any pretention of ownership of a place that during most of its history has been a christian place of worship is politically dangerous. The place is open to visitors from all over the world, thats what matters.

The view of the "politically correct" is that we should NEVER talk about the atrocities that the islamic world is responsible for. Nobody talks about the one million Europeans that were taken into slavary by the mohammedens. And I have never heard western media mentioning all the millions of african slaves that were taken to muslim lands. Yes, Europeans did it too and that is REALLY BAD. But still, the muslim world has never dealt with this dark history of theirs and I think that they will not do it in a foreseeable future. The western countries is still apologizing for their slave trade. The islamic world would still take slaves , even today, if it weren't for the western countries putting an end to that. When I read my first comment I see that I wasn't clear enough in my sarcasm. If anybody would like to know more about what islam TEACHES (not what your muslim neighbour says that HE belives) look up David Wood. He quots directly from the muslim sources.
