Raghurajpur is a heritage crafts village in Puri district, Odisha, known for its mastery in Pattachitra painting, an art form which dates back to 5th Century BC. It is also home to the Gotipua dance troupes, a precursor to the Indian classical dance form of Odissi. Raghurajpur is famous as the birthplace of one of the finest Odissi Gurus, Kelucharan Mohapatra. The small village is also home to crafts like Tussar (handloom silk) paintings, palm leaf engravings, stone and wood carvings, cowdung and paper toys.
Raghurajpur is only 10km by road from Puri yet not on the popular tourist circuit. So you have to book a car or an auto-rickshaw for travelling to and fro.
Every house in this Odisha village, just 15km from Puri, is a studio and every villager is an artist. It's like a open art gallery.
2000, Raghurajpur was declared as the state’s first heritage crafts village, after a two-year extensive study by the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH).
The artisans of Raghurajpur are always happy to showcase their work to visitors. For the art-loving traveller, watching the process of this traditional art form in the artist’s own home is a unique experience.
A pattachitra artisan uses five main natural colours to make the painting. These include red, black, yellow, white, and gerua (red-ochre) colours. “We use conch shell to make white colour. Hingulal stone from the hills in Odisha is used to make red colour.

I had the good fortune of visiting Raghurajpur thrice when primarily the trip everytime was for Puri. First time, luckily, as it was, Late Shri Jagannath Mohapatra, elder brother of Shri Kelucharan Mohapatra (- the famous Odyssi Guru), and considered to be the doyen of the Pattachitra art-form could be met with. He was, as if, simplicity and humility personified. In appearance and dress he appeared like our famous novelist, Sharatchandra Chattopadhyay. He took pains to show us around the sculpting and pattachitra activity which was being carried on by his students. It was all beautiful. We were told that if and when any damages occured due to ravages of time, to the the Konarak Temple, his village people were called out to do the repairing work, due to their efficiency in sculpting. We could see an old German book, the pages of which had yellowed with age and were getting unstuck from it also, which was there with him. In that book there was a reference about him, with his photograph, and pattachitra painting. We were told that the whole village was engaged in the art primarily, and also sculpture. In our second visit we were informed that, unfortunately, he had passed away. Then we could meet with his adopted son, who had taken up his mantle for the village people but, unfortunately, he, too, had passed away when we went there for the third time. However, Shri Jagannath Mohapatro's son-in-law had then been functioning as the village elder and suggested to us to go around the village and see the work being carried on by the householders. All the houses were situated contiguously, on both sides of a single road and the family-men started beckoning us to see their work for appreciation, and, to a little extent, also in the hope of selling some to us. They pointed out that though the Central Government was, indeed, show-casing their work in Pragati Maidan in Delhi to the prospective buyers directly so as to fetch better prices for them, yet not all could afford to go there for that purpose, and, therefore, it was getting more and more difficult to survive for lack of proper outlet for sale. The danger is, therefore, apparent about the grand traditional art dying out in not too distant a future. I, therefore, appeal to whosoever be in a position to create the scope for a decent surviving atmosphere for the concerned artists and their work. It may kindly be realised that their work is seen to be believed. It gives a thrill in the heart and pride in the mind about our own countrymen doing such splendid work with great labour, which deserves the greatest respect for them by us, in fact.

অপূর্ব! এগুলো মানুষের হাতের কাজ, ভাবাই যায়না। কত ধৈর্য্য, প্রতিভা আর অধ্যাবসায় লাগে এগুলি বানাতে!

Bishoy ta opurbo holeo their intention is not. If you visit multiple house there you will find exactly same picture . How is that possible if they are painting by their own hand. Even in one house you will find multiple copy of same picture which is point to point same. Ask any real painter, it's not possible. And the color what they are using its simple acrilic colour nothing else and no natural colours are used. If you question them how all colors are made they can not answer properly.
