Visual review on the T6 Janeway Class Science Vessel.
In a distant future timeline, Federation starships have undergone a number of interesting evolutions of both technology and aesthetics. Some still reflect elements of their original lineage though, as is true with the Janeway-class Command Science Vessel. Drawing its original inspiration from the Intrepid-class starships of the late-24th century, this ship has been updated to focus on speed and maneuverability in local space, without sacrificing its scientific capabilities. Unlike classic science vessels, this ship focuses its power output on hull integrity rather than shield capacity, and has also been specifically outfitted to serve as a fleet command vessel.
This starship features a Commander Science / Command Specialist Bridge Officer seat and a Lieutenant Universal / Miracle Worker Specialist Bridge Officer seat.
Command ships are impressive vessels designed to inspire those around them. When the Command ship or its teammates activate a Bridge Officer ability, all Command Ships on the team will receive a small amount of the Inspiration resource. Command Bridge Officer abilities generate additional Inspiration. Once a Command ship's Inspiration meter is full they can use one of three powerful abilities that can turn the tide of battle.

I'm in the "I like it" camp. I think by the 32nd-Century, starship designs should be fairly out there and look almost impossible and even impractical by our standards. By then, the technology should be so advanced that it's probably indistinguishable from magic.

I'm not in favor of the disconnected sections (especially the upper and lower sections), but to answer the question of how crew get to those separated sections is a combination of holotech and transporters. You're walking down a hallway towards a nacelle, seeing your destination ahead (hologram of standard double doors). At the threshold you're instantly transported into another hallway (hologram of standard double doors behind you), where you find the nacelles engineering room. It's a similar process going from the lower to upper sections, except you're entering a turbolift (holograph/transporter) that opens to the deck you had requested. I think that covers it?

I really like the design and how it incorporates design aspects from the Intrepid and Prometheus classes then adding a 32nd century flare to it. I'd like to think that MVAM and Saucer separation are much easier to perform and in the event of the secondary hull being destroyed you can just float the nacelles to the saucer and bam, warp capable! But who knows, love to see her in action next season! Also LOVE the look of the shield at 32:38. It looks so good! It makes me think of the F-117 Nighthawk stealth fighter, especially with the shape of the saucer just gives it a very stealthy look to it.

It's an overdependence on the 'smart' combadge, with site-to-site transporter technology built-in. Considering what happened to 'Discovery-A', when it was hacked and all that, I wouldn't rely on those badges when the chips are down.

Interesting assumption. The wrong assumption, but an interesting one at that. Smartphones are easily lost or stolen. Dependence and addiction are also major problems with Smartphones. I may use them, but I can do without. Having to suit up with an EVA suit or having to rely on shuttle pods to travel from the separated sections when the crew's unable to use the transporter function, is a major flaw in the system. And it's not like you can uses those methods while the ship is travelling at impulse or warp speeds.

It's IDIOTIC to design a ship where you have to beam to get to parts of it. Why over complicate it? What if any enemy is using something to jam transporters, like we've seen in the shows a dozen times. STD is garbage Trek, it's made Star Trek a laughing stock.

@@michaelsoprano5556 Not having been able to even get through Season 2 (I didn't even make it past the "ancient sphere" nonsense episode), I still know the general beats of where the show has gone since and it's utterly ridiculous. I won't go into the plot points, or what passes for them, but from an aesthetic standpoint these ships with the disconnected sections really don't seem like an evolution of designs like the Enterprise-J or such. It smacks of "wouldn't it look cool if we did this" with zero thought as to practicality or function. The J already had that problem by virtue of being a pancake with spindly pylons and a sliver for a secondary hull. I also find it frankly hilarious that Starfleet and the other major powers were still using dilithium-controlled matter-antimatter reactors to power their ships by the 32nd Century. The sort of technological stagnation that would require is laughable; almost as much as the BS notion of someone forming some kind of psychic link(?) with dilithium and then causing it to become inert with just a thought. It wasn't bad enough to throw pseudo-scientific nonsense like interstellar mycelium or "thinking" repairs into existence, they also had to screw up established concepts and apparently turn dilithium into some dimestore knockoff of kyber crystal. Nu Trek is just trash.

@@michaelsoprano5556 In STO the Tzenkethi use short range transporters instead of turbolifts, and the Iconian Herald ships have detached floating sections, so this is nothing new. If someone jams transporters in the 32nd C, maybe they hop in a shuttle, or have an extending drawbridge, or reverse the polarity. In Star Trek, if you think there's a flaw there's usually a sci-fi solution, because it is made up. Anyway, you could look at the original Connie design and ask "Why over complicate it?" with its nacelles on pylons and weird saucer.
@aibohphobe

And they did a whole episode already where the personal transporters were easily disabled because they are dependent on the main computer, which apparently has no antivirus protection. The only way their plan worked on Discovery is that it's nacelles, unlike this thing, need to attach to the main hull when at warp. If a turbolift breaks you can take a jefferies tube. These ships would require a spacewalk. It's just plain dumb if the only supposed benefit is maneuverability.
@The_Lucent_Archangel
@The_Lucent_Archangel 3 жыл бұрын
The Tzenkethi in STO are such a comical bunch. They're basically the Cabal of Trek beta canon, and their mobile starbase thing got disabled and then captured by a turncoat, a random blueberry character (us), his or her BOFFs, and a pissed off one-eyed Klingon. I wouldn't point to their use of transporters over turbolifts as a good idea. The Iconians were also basically a Tier 0 civilization, so they can get away with doing impractical shit like detached ship sections - especially since they tended to be the ones hacking other races' computers and whatnot. Back to turbolifts...Major Grin does a good job here on KZfaq of highlighting how asinine Nu Trek really is. Seeing all this cavernous empty space inside a ship around characters fighting in a whizzing turbolift is emblematic of all that's wrong with it. Hamfisted attempts at style over substance and a bullshit lack of continuity - even to ITSELF. I also find it curious how often anyone who shortens Constitution to "Connie" is a fanboy of this derivative trash.

@michaelmichaelagnew8503 2 жыл бұрын
@@goku546686 He was talking about power not information through a carrier wave like what we do with modern day information though its a little more complicated than that. Right now we cannot send power over a wifi/bluetooth/radiowave signal to power a device but that's in a research phase so who knows it might actually happen 20 years from now or maybe never. Right now its only fantasy you see in books or on TV. So to be clear since you are confused we have been able to send information through the air with a carrier signal that's modulated with an intelligence wave, and its through radiating power that its sent from one radio to another. We can send information over that wave but we have not been able to figure out how to power something on the other end by using that same wave. That is what he was talking about above. So technically its fantasy right now but Science fiction has a way to eventually become a reality down the road in the future.

i will always stand by my position of the dethatched nacelles , i think the idea is just plain stupid and in this ship its compounded by having floaty primary and secondary hull , . while im fine with the idea of a separation mode for what ever reason if your splitting the ship up to do different functions and such . but Disco just misses the mark with these design choices , but the overall ship shapes are fine , connect the segments and it looks like a interesting design , these federation ships just have major design flaws , relying on personal transporters ETC many assume that programable matter could be used to create physical connections when needed but still each segment would still need to be a complete independent starship which just by looking at it its not the intention of the designers

I can kinda see why you'd have the nacelles separated from the hull without the pylons because you can adjust turning a bit more and maybe modify the distance and height to adjust the warp bubble (like the original Intrepid class) but I don't really see the purpose for the gap between the two sections, it just seems like a random thing. Edit: I think the parts are connected by some kind of field that acts like a support, sorta like a force field and the power goes to each section through a magnetic field or something with lasers kinda like in real life but this is just guessing.

Just how big is this ship supposed to be? Given that if you look closely you can see that each of the "rows of windows" visible on the model actually have two rows of windows each, not just one. This means that each of those narrow strips are two decks tall and moreover, it implies that there must be at least 8 to 9 decks between each of those strips without any windows at all. This suggests that the overall ship length would have to be FAR larger than the 500 to 700 meters that some people have speculated, in fact, probably much closer to 2100 to 2800 meters (assuming a minimum 3m deck height and possibly allowing for as much as an additional 2m between decks, making each of those strips between 6 to 8 meters tall). This however would seem to contradict the on-screen evidence, given that the Voyager-J doesn't appear to be anywhere near that big relative to the Discovery.

I feel like this is a triumph of the "make it look cool" philosophy over those who favor practicality. I mean i'll be the first to admit that it looks great and super futuristic, but think about it from a tactical perspective. If something ever happens to the ship's transport systems everyone will be stuck wherever they are on the ship. Perfect way to sabotage it: wait til the ship is on overnight shift (usually the time when the most experienced bridge officers are not on duty), mess up the transporters, and then take over the bridge. It'll take forever to regain control- and in the meantime you could cause major havoc. As an unrelated sidenote, it would be interesting to ask how is the energy distributed across the ship from the engineering section's warp core to everywhere else given the fact that the ship is separated? Maybe they use cell phone chi wireless charging technology to get the energy across the ship? 🤔 I like the cloak on the ship, as you can easily imagine situations where being undetected would help a science vessel observe natural phenomena better or complete some type of research or even get by hostiles undetected. However, I am concerned about a science vessel not really having any other defensive capabilities besides a cloak. I assume it has standard federation shields, i just hope they're boosted! This would be a great ship to provide with ablative armor--one armor generator for each separate section. Giving a science vessel the ability to "turtle" with ablative armor just seems like a smart idea. The photonic cannon seems like a real kick butt weapon that is probably more appropriate on a warship like a Defiant class, but i bet you that no one that would have to serve on the U.S.S. Janeway would be complaining about having such a powerful weapon on board!! They really got that one right when the ship was designed. One last thing--since it is named in honor of Janeway--i would hope that the ship would come with a quantum slipstream drive and trans-phasic torpedoes!!

Personal transporters, since they're literally part of the badge now. Sure, it might seem wasteful, power-wise, but the first episode of Season 3 featured a running shoot-out with abundant use of them, and nobody seemed worried about running low on power.

The default material is too mottled and looks dirty. And also it’s a shame they didn’t make the windows orange as in the show, it would make the ship look a lot warmer.

Compare it with the Iconians. Look at the similarities. I would say by the 32century the Federation were at least approaching or had reached the level of tech the Iconians had. Essentially the Federation has become the new iconians.

@Quetzalcoatl_Feathered_Serpent
@Quetzalcoatl_Feathered_Serpent 3 жыл бұрын
@@dennisreed6345 That doesn't mean they didn't have the tech for it. Its likely they never needed it or desired it. The Iconians were in many ways less imperialistic than younger races initially. Likely cause they already had control or domian of the majority of the galaxy by the time of the fall and also cause Iconians didn't breed as fast compared to other races and as such didn't require as much resources. The Federation which is a alliance of races requires constant need of resources to feed growing populations, infranstructure, and expansion and exploration to new places. The Iconian Gates are amazing but they have severe limitations if someone gets ahold of your network and the physical structures can be destroyed. Transwarp and other methods likely gives you better flexibility and not to mention in order for the gates to work you need to setup a anchor for there to be a link. Who knows maybe the federation does have Fed Gateways. It just relies on a certain power source like everything else.

Besides aesthetics, not so sure of the practicality of detached nacelles. Attached nacelles are failsafe. These detached nacelle designs demand always on energy fields that can never be disrupted to maintain proximity to the main hull and saucer.
