25:18 "desire and value" - The Dharma of the Buddha is a prohibition against becoming entangled with desire and attached to outcome. When we read between the lines, it is also a prescription for longing, and for love. This is not obvious. We naturally assume that longing is equally as bad as wanting, but is it? Perhaps we are setting ourselves up for disappointment. Maybe we'd be better off just to lower our expectations. However, a big part of being human is building a better world, and that involves taking a risk. If we stop nurturing healthy desires this world would be devoid of well-being. Longing is not an impulsive desire that comes and goes, it is rather the one thing we are willing to build toward, wait for, even die for. Longing has quality and value baked into the cake. Health longing has to do with our primary aim in life and what we teach our children. If we can't get these basic things right, then we are moving in the direction of insanity. This mad, mad world is full of sociopathic opportunists who are just doing just that. The Seer, having witnessed this collective effort to avoid responsibility, becomes the voice of sanity which cries out, "repent perish."
