OUR TIME
In 1983, Vito Russo produced and co-hosted "Our Time," a television series focused on the gay community. The thirteen episodes that ran on public television station WNYC tackled important issues such as gay history, drag, alcoholism, race, and a famous episode at the dawn of the AIDS crisis featuring Larry Kramer. On-air guests included luminaries such as Harry Hay, Rita Mae Brown, Tennessee Williams, Harvey Fierstein, Quentin Crisp, Lily Tomlin and many other notable public figures.
30 years after "Our Time" originally aired, we are able to share this groundbreaking series with the world. With the exception of two missing episodes, we have posted each show in its entirety for scholars, historians, and a whole new generation who may not be familiar with Vito's legacy.

I'm a fan of Vito Russo . I was unaware of Harry Hay. I commented about the documentaries that were very well done.

I was born in December 1982 and have only really watched "Dynasty" in reruns though I remember my mom watching it when I was young along with "Dallas" and "Knots Landing." I wondered how gay men felt at the time about Steven wavering back and forth on his sexuality in "Dynasty." I found the opening remark about Steven popping in and out of the closet amusing. 😄

Amazing, inspiring filmed'lesson we constantly revisit. On a humorous angle here, I wonder how often Harry Hay was greeted with, "HEEEYYY Harry!!!"

As sister of a bisexual sister this program was so important to get more knowledge of gay and lesbian history and always work against prejudices and see we are people. Sexual preference is just a small part of what we are. Have also a first cousin and second cousin that is gay. So no place for prejudices here .❤

Amongst all the great stuff here, I have to say how nice it is to know the proper pronunciation of “Mattachine” and “Bilitis”. Even if I’ve been saying them wrong for decades! 😀

The host of this show,, they guy with the mustache, was he the basis of the gay character briefly seen in in one scene of the new movie "Eyes of Tammy Faye" He looks just like him

I regret not being part of the community more . Straight society is so clique-ish . I , being bisexual , decided to pursue a straight heteronormative life with a wife and 3 kids and have no direct regrets about that decision . I love my family life . I should probably have pursued a little more fellowship with the gay community though . Its a rich history with titanic triumphs and humonguous setbacks from Stonewall to The AIDS epidemic . Now that my kids are out as bisexual and nonbinary I feel like I am feeling a draw back towards gay activism as a duty as a loving father .
