As a millennial, I understood like 93% of what was said but I don't think I could talk back to them using the same words. I finally understand first gen kids of immigrants who understand their parent's native tongue but can't speak it.

My friend recently said “blicky finna bark” in a group message and I understood it completely but also realized that no one else that I work with would know what tf that means.

Listening to her felt to me like listening someone that speaks a similar language to mine but a one that I don't know. For example Polish and Czech. I could figure out what she was talking about from context but wouldn't be able to "translate" it word for word.
