This is ,litterally, the only recording, here on you tube, that has the right tempo. All other live recordings of this concerto are being played without any energy and interest. Vivaldi's music, precisely, bassoon music is extremely energic, as you can see in the notes themselves. In the 1st movement there are so many 16s going up and down in harmony. You cannot play that so lousy. This is one of the rare good recordings.

The best bassoon concert I've ever listened to. They must have used period instruments. Those sounds are full of texture and flavor, and made it so much enjoyable. I also liked the tempo which is very fast and that how some baroque music should be performed.

Quando l'Italia produceva Geni e guidava culturalmente l'Europa. Che Dio ci aiuti.
Wow...people, if you don't like it, don't listen to it. I'm no expert, and am only an amateur bassoon player, but I like this. Also, music (if I may express my opinion) is internal. It's deep, and personal. There are standards of course, but saying things like 'bad recordings' should be done away with...I find somewhat insulting. There are so many ways to play the same set of notes and each time convey something different. It would be boring if there were only one way to play a piece.

It's music like this that makes me love playing bassoon. The tone is superb, it really sounds like a tenor voice in some places. That's what I love about playing an instrument that so few people understand and yet share the same feeling, except for them, they just sing. I can't sing but I like to express my musical desires through playing. It's like humming for me I guess.

Yes. The timbre is very different from a modern bassoon, which sounds better (arguably), but modern bassoons have far more keys, which makes the fingerings extremely complicated at times. Especially in the upper octave. I'm not complaining, though--no one has ever defeated me in a thumb war. (:

I don't think so. He is actually the most popular and widely recognizable of all composers among the masses, which do not tend to listen a lot to classical music yet know his style in a heartbeat. EVERY classical music collection has a Vivaldi section/album.

@TheFineArtsReview1 Perhaps you could not appreciate this recording because you listen to it AFTER you have listened to Azzolini's, and that is why you cannot get in tune with this one, because your ears have already been accustomed to Azzolini's. But if you listen to this one FIRST, and the Azzolini's AFTER, you might find just the opposite things to say LOL =D This often happens when we hear a version of a song and then hear another's version of the same song...

Although I agree that the orchestra is incredibly expressive, I think that the bassoon, by construction, is less expressive of an instrument than a violin for instance, let alone a fantastic ensemble.

He is playing the early, baroque version of the bassoon, and probably it's harder to intonate and make phrases on it than on a regular bassoon.
