I just simply love it more than ever. Now it February 9th 2021 and we are approaching the first anniversary of the GLOBAL PANDEMIC OF THE CORONAVIRUS in the UNITED STATES. We have been under Quarantine and LOCKDOWNS with other restrictions. Thus this fantastic performance has given me especially an outlook on the visual interpretation of PICTURES AT AN EXHIBITION. I remember playing this when I was in junior high school in the schools Orchestra for graduation. We played THE GREAT GATES OF KIEV AND THE FRENCH MARCH MILITARIES instead of POMP AND CIRCUMSTANCE. We used Gongs and very large cymbals with four sets of Kettle Drums.

Vladimir Ashkenazy is magnificent in this performance. I am very musically moved by his playing and interpretation.

A spellbinding performance here by this great master of the instrument! It is actually astonishing to see him interpret and perform this amazing piece. I don't know if anyone can play the Great Gates better than this--here the maestro brings all his authority and passion to a point and draws every last iota out of the instrument to articulate the timeless grandeur of Mussorgsky's glorious chords.

I am overwhelmed those chiselled skillfull hands coped so well with everything thrown at them but the passion and commitment render this one of the greatest examples of his art...everything we knew he was capable of came to fruition here. He played with such a rampant sense of occasion... he threw his cap to the wind and rawed his magnificence to the heavens

The introduction sets the scene perfectly to a remarkable piece of music for solo piano. Fair play to Ravel et al. Everybody would love to have had a part in this music. alas for all, it stands up higher as a solo,than with any amount orchestration. This piece of music is one of the greatest tunes it's massive , entertaining, to die for, hopeful, melancholly and victorious all at once.

I'm not a very educated man in classical music. But when it comes to this piece, I really find it one of the most dynamic, both rhythmically and tonally than anything I've heard. It's so dissonant at times but it's held together by this thematic spine, which is so strong, it allows the rest of the composition to whirl off in fantastic and surprising flirtatious embellishments in melody and metaphor.

Mussorgsky was an unsung genius; his music shunned by critics and even friends, to the point of his music edited by his friend Rimsky-Korsakov. This piece in its original form shows the pain Mussorgsky had as he lost a good friend; as the exhibit moves away from the sadness of movements such as Il vecchio castello and Bydlo, you see the whimsical genius and virtuosity of Mussorgsky, from the Ballet of Unhatched Chicks, to Limoges, and in the Promenade in between, you can see Mussorgsky's sadness emanating as he remembers his old friend the artist Viktor Hartmann, until we finally reach the glorious finale of the Gates of Kiev. Every movement is an image of both Hartmann's work and the emotions of Mussorgsky. This piece will be remembered as a glorious remembrance to a dear friend. Mussorgsky's music of a purely Russian taste will be remembered as we remember the chilling portrait of Repin of a Mussorgsky, who just days later, and after his birthday, died, as his drinking has gone too far.

This is essentially how I've always heard this piece performed (many times) - and Ashkenazy is remarkable - but seek out Pletnev's astounding performance and you will hear it performed as if for the first time.

I like this performance. However, I find that Evgeny Kissin's performance in Paris portrays all those characters in a much clearer way, while keeping the piece very steady. This performance not so much though, as I cannot hear all the different characters as much as I should.

I like Ashkenazy a lot of the time but I don’t appreciate his vision of the promenade. There’s no phrasing or variance of any kind - he’s just stamping on it. A rather ugly rendition of a beautiful, grand, majestic tune. Gnomus was the great sensitive player I know and love
