Blackface happened in America. Prada is an Italian brand, I don't think they could realize it was racist in America. Frankly speaking, I'm black, African, and I'm kinda tired of seeing people call " racism" everywhere and get triggered for practically anything. Because if we want to continue on that path, we can always find something racist or offensive to a group of people, a culture or a religion in particular. I don't think we can end that problem like this. But it's just my opinion

Blackface happened in America but it is still happening in Europe, specifically Belgium and the Netherlands.(They see it as a culture to paint their faces black during the christmas period). I know this because i live in the Netherlands. And yeah, it does not seem racist to someone who does not know the history and does not live in a country where this "culture" is practiced, but when you see white europeans running around the streets with black faces and red lips and wooly hair, then believe me that is kinda racist.

@@JosephFuller Thanks for spending the time to articulate this with sensitivity and understanding. I agree with how you have put it. Our reactions to these things mean there are deep wounds that go way back that are yet to be healed and yes some of us might seem overly sensitive to race issues to the annoyance of others - black, whites, mixed etc. - who can say move on, but you are correct with the reporting of some of these issues as well as the lack of awareness of some...people who have not been stung by wasps might not understand others' fear. Some blacks like to think the world has moved on until a real racist act takes place, then they cry foul...all the bits add up.

I do enjoy this show a lot, but I hate how they have to see racism in everything. This is a fantasy object, without any gender, race or origin. How is that racist? And even if it was supposed to represent a black man, how is that racist anyway? If it was a white object, noone would be crying out, which means if you saw all skin colors as equal, this object being painted black shouldn’t be racist after all. Even more, if I bring wooden statues from africa representing black people as decorations because I think they are cool, is that racist? No it isn‘t. It‘s just decorations. It‘s not representing any racism after all. To me, it seems like you‘re seeing racism where there is none, but your vicimiting point of view on the world creates it. I think, you should try to see the world from an angle where skin colora to exist, but they don‘t matter to people and ask yourself if something is racist. Because that should be the ultimate goal after all, shouldn’t it?

I'm pleased that the person reporting the Prada business used the term "racially insensitive" rather than "racist" because I think there's a significant difference. If Prada had no intention of these particular characters representing black people then how can it be racist? It's the people seeing them that are making the connection, not the people making them. I would consider it to be racially insensitive though, because anyone with any awareness should have been able to see that there would be people upset by that because of actual racism, both past and present. If you don't believe mem that there's a difference, let me provide another example. I watched a video of an ultimate frisbee game a while back and a black player made an extremely athletic play and then celebrated by thumping his own chest several times. Someone, who was quite possibly not American, commented and compared him to a gorilla. They did so specifically in a positive light, saying that his physical prowess and celebration were strong and intimidating. It was intended to be a compliment, just like you might favourably compare someone to a bull or a cheetah for their physical prowess. Someone else commented and called them racist because of the fact that black people have often been compared to apes and monkeys in a derogatory way. It is true that those comparisons have been made but they are specifically an attempt to suggest that black people are of lower intelligence than white people, so obviously racist. In the case of this comment though, it was done to compliment the player on his physical prowess, so how can that be racist? Maybe I'm wrong but I got the impression that the same person would have said exactly the same thing about a white person who made the same play with the same celebration. I would consider the comment to be racially insensitive because it did not take into account that some black people would be put in mind of those other comparisons that were genuinely racist but there was no intent to denigrate and they may not even have been cognisant of the fact that it was a black person they were commenting about.

Prada is an italian company and italian reality is different, black face here is pratically not an issue because nobody knows about american history that much. Also the people who made the decision at Prada where all italians except for a chinese man and that is just normal in Italy because the society is different from the one in the U.S.A.

Those toys look a lot like Jinx from Pokemon, the way it used to be like 10 years ago. They got a lot of backlash for it and had to change it. Guess the Japanese aren't the only ones that can make a mistake like that..

So true you can tell no black folks work in Prada marketing or management. I would have been quashing the item pretty quick.

@@truthfiction8408 true question. Isn't big read lips the way non black people used to depict black people? I think it's not about the dolls ( whatever it's called) it is about the historical context.

in Prada's managerial position there aren't black people because Prada is italian and in Italy there isn't the cultural diversity that there is in America, most managers (and people in general) are white Italians and some Chineses in the last years. in fact in the staff there are the Italian (so white) family and a Chinese man. it's not a matter of racism but of numbers, black managers are few because there are few black people in general.

Cardy B and who? Yup, I am officially out of the culture loop. Now I know how my dad must have felt when I came home with Megadeath and Ministry cassettes. "Mega who and Ministry of what?" were probably his thoughts.

Yeah right. Prada knew exactly what they are doing. Any kind of publicity will do for brands like Prada, Michael Kors etc.

Trevor, I enjoy your show but am really surprised that you accuse Putin of cracking down on rap. Did you hear what he said? He said, his government will help to promote rap - but less the references to drug taking. Is that so wrong? Rap all you want but don't encourage impressionable youngsters to consume drugs. What is so wrong about that? Perhaps I'm missing something here.

Putin looks like a dad who was forced to go to his child's school play, who then had to go through a whole night of terrible badly-acted dialogues, just to catch a glimpse of his childs' 10-second scene on stage.

I don't get why so many of the people who don't see this as racist are so offended by the fact that other people see it as racist. Like, there doesn't need to be a consensus on whether something is racist or not. But if anything more than a small fringe of people see it as racist, that's a good enough reason to backtrack. And generally, nothing of value is lost when that happens. So why are the people complaining about oversensitivity so bothered?
