Part 7: • Chris Herren on Multip...
Part 1: • Chris Herren on Settin...
--------
In this clip, Chris Herren got candid about his drug use during his second year in the NBA which proved to be his last. He talked about playing ball overseas and smuggling prescription pills with him to make it through the time away from the States. Chris also opened up about his transition from pills to heroin and why he hasn’t ever asked his sons what they remember about that tumultuous time in all of their lives.

I didn’t go the recovery or 12 step route. But once the pills led to H, and the H led to fent, by the time it hit me I had lost and hurt everyone. Watching Chris, Brandon Novak, sprinkled in with some David goggins...I’m extremely fortunate to say I’m at 412 days sober. Love❤ and strength if you’re going through this vicious cycle.

It takes an opioid addict to spot an addict. Small pupils, slightly shiny glaze to eyes. You notice the withdrawal symptoms more. You can tell when an addict is high they have “euphoria” behaviours. Some people Clean, some people jabber, it’s hard to explicitly see. Even benzo addiction shows signs and slurring. I was a opiate addict from 14-28, still on methadone

Yeah I was never an opiate addict, but as a former alcoholic and crack addict who’s lived in lots of sober houses, I can tell instantly when someone is using, just by their eyeballs and a few other subtle cues, even if their behavior seems otherwise normal. When you’ve been around it enough you can spot the it

People who haven't been there fail to understand, as a heroin addict you aren't getting "high" . You are a mess when you don't have it, you take your opiates and it gets you to "normal" you're not really high, the coach would only be able to see the chaos or you "not" having your fix

I’ve done all that. Stole from family, friends, strangers, stores. I used to get high and smoke all my moms cigarettes. I’d fall asleep on the couch with lit smokes still burning. I remember setting my mattress on fire more than a couple times. Only to wake up, walk to the local bar/gas stations and dig thru public ash treys. People would stare at me and call me out or chase me down but I didn’t care. I’d grab a fist full and run off back to the house to smoke them or roll the butts into new cigs. I’d eat sweets all night nodding out literally eating my Parents out of house and home.. that was 3 years ago but it feels like a lifetime. I’ve accomplished so much since then and it’s very strange looking back on those times. I don’t even smoke anymore lol…

Addiction is a disease, and it doesn’t matter who you are or how successful you are, it can affect anyone, im also in recovery and to give ppl an idea of how strong addiction is, you lit view drugs as a basic need to survive, similar to how normal ppl view food, water, oxygen, shelter etc, until u get clean and the drugs out of your system, is when that changes, but you still have to deal with the issues that got you there,

I know his friends and family We're roughly the same age and from Fall River Read both books Watched the espn doc countless interviews and speeches... His stories don't change BUT new ones seem to pop up that someone like me should've really heard by now I just heard another one I don't believe it's revealed anywhere in the book, doc or anywhere else that says he was living in a bad area in Fallriver while playing in Boston In fact, many times he outlines husslin from the practice facilities to Fallriver then back to his house/condo somewhere in a suburbs near Boston (Waltham?) He says he told his wife he was staying late to get in more practice/training Maybe the drugs messed up his memory a little? And this memory was revealed much later But this one isn't a small detail Can you imagine one of the Celtics today living in a second floor tenement in the South end FR? ( Not a particularly nice area if you don't know) That wouldn't just be a massive red flag but it'd probably become a news story I don't live in a shitty area and if a professional athlete lived in my neighborhood it'd be a huge deal
