Part 1: • Ced Gee on Seeing the ...
--------
MC Ced-Gee continued to explain how the Ultramagnetic MCs formed by describing how Moe Love and TR Love joined. Ced-Gee said that they were originally an eight to ten person DJ crew, known as the People's Choice Crew, and would DJ parties.
Ced-Gee also described signing to Next Plateau and Andrew Harrell's Uptown Management. The Ultramagnetic MCs dropped a string of singles before their debut album, including "Ego Trippin" which featured the same Joe Cocker sample heard in 2Pac and Dr. Dre's "California Love." The crew eventually left Uptown Management for Rush Management. Lyor Cohen also tried to get the Ultramagnetic MCs out of their deal with Next Plateau after they felt like the label's president wasn't putting enough effort into their records.
Ced-Gee also talked about being the primary producer on the crew's classic debut, "Critical Beatdown." He also talked about DJ Scott La Rock making him take music seriously as well as encouraging him to purchase the SP-12. He detailed his production work on Boogie Down Productions' "Criminal Minded" album and the classic track, "The Bridge is Over." Ced-Gee explained how the song was made in only 30 minutes and the record's impact.

I love hearing stories from the 80’s. I feel like so many artists get skipped over when we play the Hip-Hop History documentaries. It’s like started out the park, Grandmaster Flash, Run-DMC, Def Jam then they jump all the way to The Chronic and 2Pac. Most of them don’t even mention artists like The Fat Boys, Big Daddy Kane, Doug E Fresh, KRS-One, UTFO, Whodini, etc...

I was also lucky enough to have a walkman that could record Red Alert and Chuck Chill Out on KISS and I used my Aunt's stereo to record Mr. Magic and Marley Marl on WBLS. That night was the best hip hop music I ever heard. Marley show was called The Marley Marl Michael Jackson Mega Mix. That's shit was ridiculous Ultramagnetic killing the promos with live in studio performance. It's was and still is my best NYC trip.

The music, the whole sound and vibe on Criminal Minded was so unique and dark. When I was 16, my friend, Pat, got it first. I had just moved from one side of Houston to the other, where he still lived. I used to call him on the phone every night and make him set the phone down by the speaker and play the record for me until his mom needed to use the phone. My next payday was like 5 days away. I skipped school and went into work and got my check first thing, cashed it, went and bought my copy of Criminal Minded, went home, smoked some weed, and listened to it ten times. I swear I had that entire record memorized by the end of the first day I had it.

Queens was always more quiet residential homes than anything interesting. Wasnt much reason to go out there...It got rowdy in the 80s during the crack epidemic..but that song really made queens have to go hard for their respect

Yeah, especially back then, Queens was the preferred borough to raise a family and it was bigger, but like everywhere in NYC it also had it's hoods and projects where it wasn't safe. And even before 'The Bridge Is Over' came out, Queens wasn't quiet, it was already making mad noise with two of the most influential artists in hip-hop history, Run-DMC and LL Cool J.
