Part 11: • Fred Williamson on Doi...
--------
Actor Fred "The Hammer" Williamson opened up about a contentious episode involving late soul singer Bill Withers, dating back to when Williamson was filming with actress Denise Nichols, who was dating Withers. Williamson revealed Withers had become suspicious and antagonistic because Nichols was working on location with Williamson. Withers, mistakenly believing the actress and her co-star were having an affair, broke into her hotel room, causing Williamson to have to intervene. It is also suggested that the song by Withers entitled "Who Is He (And What Is He To You)?" may have drawn from the tension of this incident. Williamson, however, would not confirm if the song was about him, simply noting that the lyrics do reflect the encounter.

Still remember him walking downtown in Chicago, in the late 80s. (State Street) I was on my lunch break and my mouth opened and eyes bucked in shock. He put his index finger up to his lip as if to say, "hush be quiet." Then he nodded and smiled and so did I. Know doubt he didn't wanna make a big scene. Got to respect him!

The best interviewers are seen not heard. They facilitate and get the best out of their interviewees by subtly guiding them along, almost like a compass. Vlad LOVES to be seen/heard/and make the story about him if at all possible. Gives himself pats on the back constantly. But at least he likes to listen, as in LISTENING TO HIMSELF TALK.

His interview style is like a TV talkshow host. Everyone from Johnny Carson to Jay Leno to David Letterman to Arsenio Hall to Oprah Winfrey to Wendy Williams etc have the same interview style that Vlad uses. An interviewer is more likely to be hands on if the show is named after him, so nobody should be surprised to see that Vlad is larger than life on a channel called VladTV

I had heard that she really didn't love Bill Withers. She married him but never was happy. They supposedly fought even before they got married. He also supposedly married her as a status symbol. Plus, she's been married 3 times and the longest one was 3 years. Bill remarried and stay married 44 years until his death. Something to think about. 🤔 Groovy song, though. I just played it. Also, Vlad, it's dad-gummit. 😅

"Who Is He (And What Is He to You)?" is a track from Bill Withers' 1972 album, Still Bill. The music was written by Withers along with Stan McKenny, who wrote the lyrics. The song has also been featured on the soundtrack of Quentin Tarantino's Jackie Brown. Wikipedia.

That's where I discovered it! Late 90's I watched it for the first time. Also learned about Strawberry Letter 23 from Brothers Johnson and Aragon from Roy Ayers from that movie as well as a few others. Love the movie, love the soundtrack and love the song. The soundtrack is missing a few songs though unfortunately. Aragon isn't on it and a few others ice had to track down aren't either. Cissy Strut wasn't on the ST. That song has been my ringtone on my phone since I got my first smart phone back in 2011!

As already pointed in the comments, Stan McKenney, a radio DJ, wrote the lyrics to "Who Is He (And What Is He to You)?" and sent it to Bill's publisher, not the other way around. The song that Bill wrote about the relationship is called "You", from the 1974 album "+'Justments", which, by the was, has a song written by Denise, "Can We Pretend".

Mr. Williamson has a multitude of stories!! Yes… Bill Withers, a brilliant songwriter and singer, was his own worst enemy at times - the man could pull the finest women, obviously with Nichols (who I crossed paths with a few times - along Larchmont Ave in Los Angeles…even tried to strike up a conversation but she blew me off, she was definitely “wounded “)- Withers was crazy jealous, obsessive and was a beater.
