In this video, we cover the theory and configuration of VLAN Trunking Protocol (VTP), which is a topic I'd like you to know if you're preparing for Cisco's CCNA (200-301) exam or ENCOR (350-401) exam.
VTP allows us to configure a VLAN on just one switch in our topology and have that change propagated throughout our topology. However, VTP has a lurking danger, and in this video, we'll see what that danger is and how to avoid it.

My Experience with VTP during a deployment for a client was horrible. It was a network optimization project, our client bought some new switches - two 3850 switches to be stacked and used at the core layer and a couple of 2960-x switches as well for the access layer. We avoided VTP configuration as we didnt want all of the VLANs on the Core Switches replicated on the Access layer switches, unknown to us, VTP had been configured on some of the older existing switches, no password or domain name but VTP was running on them. Everything was working fine until we plugged in the old switches to the network....like a plague, the entire network just came to a screeching stop, this happened while serious work was going on . I nearly ran mad, my heart was pounding, I couldn't understand what was going on... I did a little bit of troubleshooting and discovered that the VLAN assignment on some of the new switches had changed to the VLANs on the old switches we had just connected to the network. I checked the Core Switches and discovered the same thing....The luck I had was I already had a backup copy of the configuration running on the Core switches.... took me about 30Min to get things back up again.....that was the longest 30 to 40 min of my career as a network engineer, calls were just coming in from right left and center..................After that experience, I made it a point to always put every switch on transparent mode irrespective of the existing configuration before adding them to a network......

While I can’t speak to what I’ve seen on the exam due to NDA restrictions, VTP is a topic 8 cover in my ENCOR training class.

As these are Industry standard protocols so does Cisco also support GVRP or MVRP.....

when you change the switch to transparent mode so the revision number will be set to 0 and then changing it to client mode, does the revision number change back to what it was or stays on 0?

Kevin, can you also remove the vtp domain name, and then re-add it before you put back into production? Won't that change the revision number back to 0

Could VTP be used in conjunction with a VMPS? So only one VMPS would be necessary for the whole switched network instead of one VMPS for each switch. Is that possible?

Is your CCNA-301 course on your website different than the one on safaribooks online? I'm confused because the course on safaribooks says it's still not finished but the course on your website is?

Thanks so much for your interest. The videos are the same as what’s on Safari. The course on my site is complete, and I turned the course over to them in mid-October of last year. So, I don’t know why they would say it’s not complete.

Some reason just never liked the idea of this protocol, maybe V3 would not be so bad but still dislike this protocol. I also have to wonder about security with this as in theory it seems someone could find a way to make a switch with like a VTP revision number say 500 then that switch has no vlans in it plugs in network and boom nukes everything. I guess V3 this would be less an issue, but then that master switch seems like a single point of failure. Network I deal with is small so I just assume do it all manually as changing a trunk is just 2 changes, or I could also just push the changes in bulk through something like Cisco Prime.

Some, but not all, Cisco switches support MVRP and GVRP. Please check your switch’s documentation for your specific switch’s capabilities.
