Welcome back to my pottery journey! In this exciting episode of my Vlog series, I’m diving deep into the world of pottery glazing, kiln loading, and manual kiln firing. Get ready for a hands-on experience as I tackle some common pottery challenges and share valuable tips along the way.
👉 How to Reglaze Pottery:
Flaws happen (pinholes, crazing, crawling) and sometimes your glaze doesn't turn out as expected. Fear not! I’ll guide you through the process of reglazing pottery, and give your creation a second chance.
👉 Loading & Firing a Bisque Kiln:
Watch and learn as I share tips on loading a bisque kiln properly. Achieve optimal results during the bisque firing stage, ensuring your pottery is ready for the glazing process.
👉 Running a Manual Kiln:
I walk you through the essential steps of operating an older manual kiln with switches. Ya, that’s right, no dials here, just on/off! I show you how to properly load a junior cone, essential if you want your manual kiln to turn off. Gain confidence in controlling the firing process
👉 Hold/Soak on a Manual Kiln Fire:
Did you know you can do a hold/soak with your manual kiln? Discover how to use this technique to enhance glaze effects and achieve stunning results on your pottery. I demonstrate how to restart your manual kiln, and share how I do a ‘slow’ cool to help give your glaze time to ‘heal over’ which can eliminate some pesky flaws.

I too use a manual kiln(on purpose) and I have a suggestion about seeing the cones inside the kiln. I make sure that the very top set of cones is all the way at the back of the kiln right in front of a set of elements(when viewed from the top peep) Make sure you leave the area between the peep and the cone-pack open so they are visible. Check it a couple times as you load. The area between the cones and the peeps is a place to put plates or other short things. It reduces the number of things you can put on the top shelf, but I cannot see the peeps if they are anywhere but in front of the elements. I just plan for some flat things each load or leave the area open. If necessary, I put the cone pack on a shelf support to raise it to the right height.

Hi Sarah, I love all your videos! I inherited a kiln that I think is a very similar version to yours. Gare 1822 with kiln sitter, timer, and switches. I think I saw in a recent video that you’re getting a digital kiln soon (yaay!). I’d be so grateful for any tips and tricks you used to make your manual kiln firings successful! I’ve been sifting through your comments to gather some you’ve already shared- how to do a hold, using half shelves in the middle, getting a pyrometer to get exact temp readings. I bet you could do a whole video on all the knowledge you’ve accumulated about manual kiln firings! Thanks for all your great videos!

Can you email me as I’d gladly give you some pointers, but it would be easier if I emailed you. sarah@sarahwaltonpottery.com

When you reset the kiln sitter for the hold you don’t need anything to prop it up, you can very gently lower it and it will stay on.

Really needed this video, been a rough week. I typically give a light misting of hairspray to re-glaze. also, I have yet to get a result like so many of you with Winterwood, mine always come out as bumpy as the back of a frogs back. I have never heard of re-firing a bisque load, very interesting. thank you for sharing. I am preparing for shelf maint. day here soon, You are so generous to take the time to share the ups, downs, and all the in betweens with us.

Hi KD!! Always a pleasure hearing from you!! Sorry to hear you had a rough week and then to follow it up with kiln maintenance...😵‍💫 Hope you get some relief this week! Winterwood on it's own totally feels like a bumpy frog back...haha such a PERFECT analogy!! I think its in the glaze layering and firing higher, ^ 5½ - 6 at least... I had really 'froggy' 🐸 texture and little movement when it only got to ^5. food for thought🤔🥰

I put my cone packs where there is a coil behind them when I look through the peep. That's the only way I can see them. Thanks for sharing your process! On my kiln, I can lift the trip lever and push the button back in, and slowly let the the lever down. I think it's important to say not to leave the kiln unattended. It's easy to get distracted with other things and forget!

I loved this video, you have given me hope!! I will re-glaze some mugs that I don't love! I did only two layers of glaze and in some parts, I can see the clay body which was not the idea. Do you know if I can fire them as I regularly do? Or does it have to be a longer firing? Could I fire with some other pieces on the same load that are being glazed-fired for the first time? Thank you!!
@SarahWaltonPottery
@SarahWaltonPottery 3 ай бұрын
Hi Daniela! Yes you can refire your piece as you would do regularly and with other works that are going in for the first time. Sometimes I don’t add more glaze just a refire, other times I may grind out an imperfection and add glaze just to the spots that need it. I’ve also added glaze all over when I didn’t use enough the first time. Remember tho, you don’t always get better results, sometimes glazes and clay don’t like refires, but I say go for it anyways, because you don’t like it now, so there is a chance you will LovE it!! Keep me posted! 😉

Oh wow! I thought I couldn’t do a hold because I have a manual kiln! So simple! I had no idea! Thank you for that tip! I hear a lot of people doing a cone 5 with a 20 min hold for glaze firing. I always have done a cone 6 with no holds. I got some come 5 bars and I’m nervous to try it! What should I except would be different?

I'm in the same boat...I just bought some ^5 junior cones yesterday and I'm going to try and see if I can do 15 or now that you say, 20 min hold to reach the ^6...fingers crossed. I'm a few days away from a glaze firing so it's going to be a bit before I share.

I got them on sale for next to nothing a couple of years ago...tho, they've had similar ones on and off and in different colours too. so check them out if you can!! As for taking photos, yes it's lovely to have a designated spot but you'd be amazed on how fantastic taking a picture on you kitchen counter with a plant in behind can turn out!!! I do it allll the time! xo

So I have a kiln sitter kiln as well and I’m so glad you showed how it works, or doesn’t. So never ever look into the kiln without welding glasses or goggles!! When you use those to look in the peeps you can see the cones much better. Once the temp gets too high to se the peeps use a METAL flashlight with a really strong beam that is straight. If you have a cheaply flashlight that just spreads its beam everywhere it will shine onto the sides of the kiln and reflect badly. Also if it’s plastic, yeah! It will melt! Ask me how I know. Lol. Hope that helps. The flashlight with the glasses works really well. Sometimes you still can’t see so blow into the hole quickly and you can see the cones for a second. Hope that helps. When I reglaze I wipe the lice down with alcohol to get all the oils from my hands off as well as any dust etc. And then I just glaze it and put it in front of a fan. Works without having ti do all the other stuff but of course it does take forever! When you refire pieces that you know are going to run a lot you can use a kiln stilt or stilts that don’t have the metal in them! It holds the piece up much further so the pot doesn’t stick to the cookie!

Hi Tonie, Not always but it's getting better, I've started using split shelves in the middle of my kiln to help the air flow. And just yesterday I went to Tucker's Pottery Supply and bought 2x ½ shelves so I can split up even more and see if I get even temp throughout the kiln.

@@toniesolomon hello there. I would strongly recommend that you buy a kiln Controller with your kiln. It gives you so much flexibility. You can manipulate a firing very easily. If your buying a second hand kiln usually a controller can be wired on. I’ve dealt with Tuckers in Toronto for …… I can’t believe it 40 years. They can tell you everything you need to know about what to look for when buying a used kiln. And if it can accommodate a kiln controller. If your in the west side of Toronto then Pottery Supply house is excellent. Both companies build excellent kilns. Hope this helps a bit

On the flip side, using commercial glazes are no doubt more expensive, but it is readily available, thus more people can duplicate and or be inspired to try one of my combos out.🥰
