I noticed that as well. I'd love him as an instructor. I'm doing my bus training which is very similar to this and the instructor is an unfriendly shouting ex army guy whose only method of instructing is telling you all the mistakes you are making making. No encouragement or friendliness at all. I'm hating every moment of being in a bus with him. Failed my test and he couldn't care less.

You done well Hayley. The problem with learning in an old vehicle with an out dated gear set up etc is you spend more time learning the characteristics of an old tired vehicle rather than concentrating on learning to drive to a test standard. Best of luck

one tip I found with that box was when starting off turn your palm towards the passenger side for 1st & 2nd , palm on top for 3rd & 4th ,palm towards you to hit it over the gate , palm on top again for 5th & 6th , palm towards you for 7th & 8th I found it makes the change lighter its in the wrist action, of course reverse for changing down

Excellent vlog, Hayley. That's the first time I've seen a proper training session in progress. Mr Thomas seems a very good trainer. Not overbearing or over critical. Just calm and reassuring. That's what you need. Good of him to let you film, and it can only benefit his business. I think you're at a slight disadvantage driving such an old vehicle, especially with the manual gearbox, but you manage it well. You should be well prepared for your test.

This is a great video Hayley which has definitely helped me. I'm doing my bus driver training just now and how I wish my "instructor" was like yours i.e. calm and friendly with good advice on what you should be doing at all times. In contrast to mine on my first 2 hour drive out his method of instructing was shouting in my ear a constant (and I mean constant) stream of all the things I was doing wrong. At the end of the session I wanted to pack it all in and never come back I felt so useless. This continued until my test which I failed. He didn't show any interest at all in that I'd failed.

Haley ! well done, gosh.... that gearbox creates a higher work load. You did really well. The camera position is perfect, also you take it in your stride. You will have earned that pass as you have worked hard for it. I am so pleased you have a more modern tractor unit waiting for you. Also don't let Billy get away with that chocky bar. Just love your videos. Stay safe! You have a lovely calm demeanor. Excited about day three.

Looks complicated . Way back in the day when i passed my class 2 in the army , ye that was fun . I passed in a amphibious vehicle called a stalwart( no doors ). 7 forward gears and 7 reverse . Double clutch ( if dropping down a gear , clutch(out of gear) , rev engine then clutch and in gear) , you were expected to go through all the gears without grinding the box lol. Happy days and good mates.

This video is going to be a great help to others who are preparing themselves for training. It's also been of benifit to me and I passed my test back in the 1970s. I'm sure you will do well Hayley, you have all the basics covered, another couple of days and you will be ready to ace it. I really like the look of that gearbox, it looks simple and easy to use which is always a boon when a wagon is fully loaded. David in Dudley.

I've been watching quite a few of your videos to help me prepare me for my tests. You helped prepare me to pass first time with the c+e reversing, uncouple and recouple a few weeks ago. I have the forward drive c+e test in a couple of days and hope to pass that first time too. It's wider and longer than it needs to be, 18.8m wagon and drag drawbar. An issue I've been having is that the trailer follows the lorry too nicely, so when the corner is a bit sharper it suddenly cuts in quite a bit and I'm having to learn what angle it is when the cutting in happens. It seems to be exponential. Very helpful videos! Thank you *I'm coming straight from a car licence as well, no class 2. I've 3.5 years xp in a grocery delivery van at 2.45m wide with a long wheel base. Not pulled a trailer before.im quite nervous

Wow, takes me back to my drawbar training in 2014 and having to learn the gearbox like that. And when it came to my test, I had two examiners in the cab with me. My examiner and then the Chief examiner assessing him (and me) so no pressure there. Luckily, I had a good run and passed with no minors. Take no notice of the people saying you should do it in a proper artic. After passing, I just paid for a two hour drive in the school artic and got used to an artic and the couple/uncouple procedure that way with no added pressure of having to pass the test. It would take me another year on the job to learn to properly reverse though. Good luck with the training.

Hi Gorgeous not sure I should say this. That a just a category C truck with a trailer. It's what you have been driving. Surely an actual articulation truck would been better to do training in as you would learn how to attach the trailer for real life when you pass. You won't learn anything in that training as it's all just class 2 again which you have done. Kinda wasting time getting used to an old truck you probably won't even be in a old truck like that ever again so all that time wasted getting use to something you won't drive again. The manual truck you drive for your employer I bet drives much better than that and easier to drive than that. You will pass the test because you a bright girl but when you get into the Volvo FH16 750 for the first time anď hitch into a proper trailer you'll see that the draw-bar training was rubbish. Just my opinion. Would been nice to see the training in a proper C+E vehicle. ☹☹ sorry because it's wrong vehicle I have to give it 0/10

That's what category C+E is... an entitlement for towing a trailer up to 750 kg and over. In the eyes of the DVSA it doesn't matter which combination it is. I'm learning the process of couple/uncouple and getting my head around reversing. It's not a wasted time. My company will put me out with our driver trainer in the artic before I'll be let loose on the road - don't worry :)
