My dad would have been turning 92 this year. I miss him so much. He was a pencil guy. He loved mechanical pencils and I have them now. He was also a bit of an artist. So talented. Thank you for making something so simple, like a pencil feel really special.

When I was a kid I used to collect all my tiny pencils. I had so many I created a 'mini pencil city' which is exactly what it sounds like, an entire tiny town in which all the citizens were tiny pencils. I had a grocery store for them, a school, a clothing store, a wilderness area....you are not alone in this impulse to keep them 😅

Many love them, but I don't find them any better than six or eight other brands, and the lead depends on the particular Blackwing. They're just expensive, and I believe that makes many think they're better, but I know very, very few pros who use them. The graphite is the same used by many other pencils, as is the clay.

I recently incorporated pencils into my daily journaling routines and I am liking it a lot. I still primarily use fountain pens but I am finding that there are portions of my daily writing that can benefit from using a pencil, such as drawing diagrams and doodles. It's added a whole new layer of enjoyment and expression. So yes, pencils are awesome.

As someone who lives in the PNW, I have to say the "break in the rain" comments really made me smile! I think we become so immune to it here, but I wonder if I would change if I lived in the desert. Also, I wish you would make a video about pencils: as someone who historically hasn't liked pencils (probably stemming from a distaste for primary school authoritarianism and exhaustive standardized testing), I feel like I'd like to give pencils a second chance and I think you'd do a great job of reviewing them. Your vermilion flycatcher pin is cute. Have you ever played the board game Wingspan? It’s a modern board game in which players compete to attract the most impressive collection of birds to their fictional preserve. It’s based on a deck of cards painted with realistic watercolors of North American bird species, along with facts about each one. Not only is the art beautiful, but the gameplay is an intelligent balance of luck and strategy, not long and tedious, and not overly simple or complicated.

It was nice to have a glimpse into your life in the desert. I live in Maryland and rainy days are something we have alot of. Those Tennessee Reds smell wonderful! I have the round version and use them for sketching. However the pencil I reach for the most, for writing or sketching, is the round Ooly Ninja Black Wood pencil (amazon). It's slim and has slight feedback and sharpens to a "killer" point:) The box of 12 says "super trained & stealthy" and I agree. There's also a fun poem on the back of the box. Thanks for sharing your pencil crush!

Although I prefer the convenience of a mechanical pencil, there is something beautiful about the smell of pencils and pencil shavings in particular. Maybe it is evocative of childhood in a Proustian way? Do pencils, being made of wood, have more of a connection to the earth? I have always preferred Derwent or Faber Castell pencils and a like a soft led.

One would think that Blackwing would have put an eraser thing on the end of the pencil extender. They go to all the trouble they do with their replaceable erasers and then just forget to put one on the end of the extender that steals the eraser out of the pencil. The mind boggles at the oversight.
@jamesaritchie1
@jamesaritchie1 Жыл бұрын
I think Blackwing pencils are ridiculously expensive for what you get, but I'd like them a lot better if they would remove the eraser completely so I could use them in a quality extender without having to saw them off. But, really, they test not one bit better than several other pencils brands that are much cheaper. There's nothing special about the graphite or the clay that Blackwing uses. It's the same as other professional brands use, and there's no difference in the way these things are mixed.
@5t4n5
@5t4n5 Жыл бұрын
@@jamesaritchie1 I personally use Kuru Toga pencils when i write with a pencil. They rotate the 0.5mm lead every time you press it onto the paper, thus keeping the lead nice and pointy and the writing super duper fine. And they love Leuchtturm journals, soooo smooth for such a tiny thin line. Best of all, no sharpening or pencil extenders ever required. I'm not a big fan of normal wooded graphite pencils at all, can't be bothered with all that sharpening and they just never write consistently. I use various lead holders up to 5.6mm and also lots of mech pencils down to 0.2mm (yeah, someone made a 0.2mm mech pencil).

@@adventuredenali They popped up on Amazon when I was hunting for extra firm Blackwings. I ended up researching their offerings on their website and thought I'd try the standard option first, I haven't tried any others yet but I'd like to. I got the round version (Tennessee Round) though because the angled pencils can hurt my fingers sometimes, maybe you'll like the rounds better, still rustic but less knuckle-grinding :) I LOVED reading their story on their website too, reminds me so much of home. They have so many fun offerings and they even sell a sample set of all their pencils and it's actually affordable! They do have a luxury option on their website that sounds delightful (wood from bourbon barrels I think?) but a bit rich for me. Don't get me wrong, I love Blackwing pencils, but I'm happy to support this small local company trying to get their feet under them. If you haven't read their story I recommend you check it out :D

Thanks very much for that nice Video. While you call two days of rain "Winter" It has just snowed here yesterday and today, and is likely to continue at least until Monday... Better some rainy days than to shiver in the cold, I think. Not to speak from driving on snowy roads in heavy traffic... I guess I'd like to live in "the desert", where it is predominantly warm to even hot. Btw.: Did you consider to get a tool to hold your Leather when sewing it together, instead doing it with your knees? My father used to work with leather in a Similar way professionnally, and he had a kind of spring loaded wooden clamp to do such jobs... don't know the name of it. To protect the leather in it, he had made some Protectors fitting onto the Wood, out of Leather, of course. Also, I think you should take care to protect your Fingers when sewing leather by hand. You could even make some sort of protective Sleeve out of a small peace of left over leather by yourself, if you don't want to spend money on Personal Protective Equipment. Take good care of yourself.
@-bluedog-

I found the English word for that wooden clamp to hold pieces of leather together while hand-stitching. Its a "stitching horse". In case you want to google that. There are many different types and forms of it around, so take some time to find the one that suits your needs best. Maybe you can even build one yourself, to make it best or to save money. Don't forget to make some protectors for the claws, so it won't damage the workpiece...

I don't mind pencils at all (though I'm not quite as attached to them as you are :) ), but the residue left behind...that smoodge left on the paper after you erased a bit at the end of your video...that distresses me a bit. It's terrible to admit, but I have been known to throw ALMOST pristine pages away if there was a mistake that I couldn't completely eradicate, whether they were made by pen or pencil. I've gotten better in my old age...but messy pages do still have an impact.

I love pencils, but that extender is one of the main reason why I don't use Blackwing. And I think they're just too expensive, especially when I can go through several pencils per day. I think the Tombow pencils are just as good, maybe better, and I prefer just about any extender over the Blackwing. For that matter, I think all the professional level art pencils I have, Tombow, Faber-Castell, Staedtler, General's, etc., are just as good. Even several sets of Chinese art pencils people insist on buying me for every occasion are just as good. I never use the eraser on a pencil, anyway, so I definitely don't need the kind on a Blackwing. Too, I have so many sets of art pencils, at least eighteen brands, just about every set on the market, I think, that buying Blackwing pencils would just be the largest for of redundancy, even if they were cheaper and didn't have that eraser. I also have dozens and dozens and dozens of mechanical pencils with up to five lead sizes in ever model, and 4H to 4B lead in every lead size, and lead holders with 6B and 8B. It's ridiculous.
