Apparently, Disney and Marvel released a tie-in comic that explains that Palpatine impregnated Shmi Skywalker, who as we know gave birth to Anakin. Anakin then impregnated Padme, who gave birth to Luke and Leia, and Leia gave birth to Kylo Ren. Now given the fact that Rey is Palpatine’s granddaughter (which shouldn’t be a spoiler since it had been leaked prior to the release of ROS), and many people ship Rey and Kylo, that’s a little...... yeah.

If TLJ didn't exist and the second film was spent setting up the return of Palpatine then TRoS would have felt earned and less rushed. I honestly believe JJ had a narrative in mind when he made TFA and it was Johnson that's responsible for the shitstorm that followed. I'm shocked that CE thinks JJ had opportunities to develop the story after TLJ, especially after they killed the main villain, killed off the most beloved character and essentially wrapped up the narrative. The 2nd film in a trilogy should push the story, not resolve it. JJ was essentially written into a corner and expected to create an entirely new arc, new villains and a new narrative in a single film. I also strongly disagree about Rose, she is a shallow, poorly written character.

They make it sound like JJ Abrams didn't know ANYTHING about he film that Johnson made until the premiere screening....and the studio knew even less. This entire saga for me personally sounds like a bad attempt at adapting Timmothy Zahn and even Paul and Hollace Davids’ works. They never really gave any reason for us to care about what happens to Rey, Ben, Finn, ANY of these new characters. Any major development is handled through spin off comics and books, and yeah, that’s what the EU did with older characters before Disney came around, but there’s only so many times you can come back to a franchise and attempt to breathe new life into it before it just stops feeling alive. I can remember a time when I felt devastated that Revenge of the Sith would be the last Star Wars film and then excited to see a new one more than ten years later. That magic for me is gone. And then you change it so Snoke was doing everything that the Emperor did, including possibly being related to Rey. Everything else in The Last Jedi didn't really amount to anything.

Finally someone agrees with me about Last Jedi and Rise of Skywalker. Last Jedi expanded on the world and gave nuance, yet didn't in anyway restrict next ones direction. Rise of Skywalker was fine, but very clearly was trying to cram too much into the runtime. There were multiple moments that made it very clear scenes had been cut out to make the runtime. I absolutely assumed there would be extended cut released to bluray, when I walked out. So did my friends. In fact some of the stupid stuff felt so stupid because it felt it was there to cut time. There had been better way to achieve the next point in the plot, but it took too much time so it was replaced with something stupid but instant.

It felt like the opening crawl and first act were a rushed, convoluted alternate sequel to The Force Awakens, and a desperate attempt to appease those fans who hated The Last Jedi. It was so fast and frenetic it gave you no time to step back and take it all in, and this was the biggest failing of the movie. Luckily the rest of the movie got into a groove of it's own, and was far better. Tbh, it's not the best Star Wars movie, but it's on par with Revenge of the Sith and Return of the Jedi. And it's by no means as bad as many people seem to want it to be. My only gripe is it relied too heavily on nostalgia of the past, and offered nothing new to give people nostalgia in the future. It was kind of a Star Wars Greatest Hits Final Tour. But it was fun, exciting, and made me laugh, cheer and cry in the right places. The ending with Rey and Ben was genuinely the best aspect of the film, with great performances from Ridley and Driver. A far better romance than the wooden, unconvincing excuse in the prequels, or the high school level flirting of Han and Leia. It gave the saga the poetic, bittersweet ending it needed.

Luke and Leia’s relationship isn’t a “retcon” because it was never established they weren’t in any canon material. Equally, nothing is retconned about Rey because, while saying her parents were junk dealers, doesn’t mean either A) Kylo was lying to manipulate her, B) they were posing as such, or C) they actually did that in an attempt to distance themselves from spoiler-person. And I’m not sure what math you speak of given that there’s a dubious passage of time between RotJ and TFA, and her parents look old enough with a bit of leeway.
@fermintenava59114 жыл бұрын
The math is a little questionable. If we take Rey's age and the presumed age of her parents into account, it's technically not impossible, but it still meant that Palpatine had his child at a rather high age when he was still Senator. There are probably ways to help it (it's science-fiction after all), but it feels a little cheap on a story-technical level.

I felt like this movie was missing big chunks. Everything felt like a race to the next plot point. Never a second to breath. I willl jump down a bit so that spoilers are covered and I will talk about the few points this is most obvious. Which is odd, because the movie was already basically 2 and a half hours. If there is a director's cut with these gaps filled in it would have to be damn near four hours long. 1. The opening scene. How did Kylo know about the wayfinders and where to find one? 2. As you said everything to do with Finn and Rey's storyline. He kept wanting to tell her something then that was dropped. 3. The obvious moment where they appeared to get rid of Chewie. No one in my theater even flinched we all knew it was a red herring and it happened so fast that it felt pointless besides showing Rey had lightning fingers and there HAD to be a better way to show that. 4.. Introducing random characters and giving us 0 reason to care about them. Like the blonde guy with Rose at the base, the old friend of Poe's, and the ex-stormtrooper chick who was clearly supposed to be Lando's daughter given what I have read.

I have to disagree with the point you make 2 minutes in about The Last Jedi ending such that Abrams could do "basically whatever he wanted." You're mostly right, but your use of the weasel word "basically" is glossing over the one thing Johnson's ending most definitely prevented Abrams from doing: Continuing the story began in The Force Awakens. Johnson's ending left things open for Abrams (or whoever) to step and say "And now for something completely different!" -- but that's not how you write a trilogy. As for the lineage issue, Johnson's ideas are dumb. Attack of the Clones shows HUNDREDS of Jedi not related to the Skywalkers. It's always been established that anyone can be Force sensitive, but it requires training by a Jedi (or Sith or the equivalent) to make use of the Force. Johnson making force powers manifest spontaneously is a terrible idea -- he completely fails to consider the implications. You know Force Kid? Right on the edge of puberty, having lived his whole life as a slave. Kid's going to be full of a lot of rebellious anger, a desire to lash out against those who have oppressed him. Fear, anger, the thirst for revenge -- yeah, Force Kid is 100% going to fall to the Darkside. Just like the vast majority of those "awakened to the Force." Without the emotional discipline that is the core of Jedi training, vulnerable to the easy lure of the Darkside, yeah it's going to get ugly in the Star Wars galaxy.

Exactly! Love TLJ or hate it, TLJ went and did its own thing and that is not the smartest idea with a middle movie in a trilogy. The story desperately needed an outline or at least some plan of direction. Interesting point about Force Kid. I didn't see anything remarkable in that scene because of the hundreds of Jedi we've seen before in other movies, but you're right -- that "symbol of hope" is looking a lot darker now.

When i read the crawl for this i thought there was going to be a threeway battle between the resistance first order and palatines faction that would've been better i think or better yet Disney could have knocked this outta the park with a stormtrooper leaves the first order gets hunted down. Runs into the original trilogy 3 because he needs to be hidden and help understanding this mysterious power he seems to have now imagine that a battle hardened trooper struggling to be an individual & a force user instead all he does is hollar REY!!!!!!

i would not say that call the star wars series as "silly". you can really call any movie series silly if you describe it in the simplest of terms. but that's your opinion. as for me, i won't watch it. at least, not paying to watch it. the whole sequel trilogy lacked a plan or road map to guide on. say what you will about the prequels but at least you could tell where the story was going. lucas created a vision. jj and rian just made movies. for me, i'd watch his vision over their movies.

Nerfing Rose was really unfortunate. This was a perfect chance to expand on her character and integrate her into the group.

Ironically, every problem with the Rise of Skywalker was due to JJ doing damage control for The Last Jedi, and desperately trying to please fans. Fans hated Rose, and the actress received a lot of harassment. So he gave Finn two new love interests who are one-dimensional strong independent badass women. Fans thought that Rey was a mary sue due to her mastery of the force despite lack of training. So JJ made her the granddaughter Palpantine since he’s the most powerful force user. Fans didn’t like how Snoke got killed off before we know who we was. So JJ made him one of Palpatine’s disposable clones. Speaking of Finn, you know what would have been funnier, cooler, and more satisfying? If Finn was the true hero destined to restore balance to the universe. Finn’s introduction was meant to humanize the stormtroopers. No longer were they just faceless drones, but people who were kidnapped and turned into child soldiers. How cool would it have been if Finn depowered the empire by starting a Stormtrooper uprising and helped them reclaim their identity? Without soldiers, an empire is worthless. If JJ still wanted Jannah to be Finn’s new love interest, then he could’ve showed us how Finn was never really interested in Rose that way, and has more in common with Jannah since they were both former Stormtroopers who struggled with their identity. Instead, JJ essentially threw away Finn’s character arc and turned him into a harem protagonist. Two of the new characters introduced in Rise of the Skywalker were women who were framed as being romantically interested in Finn, yet he ignored both of them to pursue Rey. It didn’t help how at the last second, JJ decided that Ray and Kylo were a thing even though it makes no sense. It’s also kinda gross if you accept the cannon that Palpatine is Anakin’s father. Which means JJ inadvertently re introduced incest in to the Star Ware saga.
@fightingmedialounge5194 жыл бұрын
Technically Lucas introduced incest in empire. Also most of jj's undermining of tlj comes from his disinterest in the set up in the previous movie. Much like rian did to him. Now that's irony.

WHY CAN'T THEY FIGURE OUT THAT THEY CAN'T KEEP DOING THIS SHIT CAUSING PROBLEMS FOR EPILEPTICS???????????????????? Do they hate epileptics????? They just figure that they can just say "fuck you" to a whole group of the theater going public because they (probably) have to have something to cover their shoddy effects or bad set design?

Rise of Skywalker was fine. It sometimes exchanged logic for pathos, and left some storylines open to the point of confusion, but it was enough space fantasy to keep me happy. And - yeah, I kinda missed Rose. But I liked that C3PO had finally something to do :)

I felt so empty after leaving the cinema. Rise of skywalker was such a dissappointment. I was so hyped for the movie, knowing that it would have a hard time to continue the path from Last jedi. but THAT? Dafuq was that? Worst thing besides all plotholes, dumbness and stupid mindless action scene after action scene is, that i feel nothing about the characters. There are no earned character moments. The moments wich are supposed to be character moments do not pay off and everything else is just fanservice but without any emotion. The Avengers Assemble scene in endgame was also just fanservice, but it hits the heart anyway, feels earned after all what happened before and is build up properly The "Lando is here" scene makes me cringe everytime. It is between totally over the top out of the blue and unbelievable stupid at the same time. God i hate this movie and i am so sad that i do. I wanted this to be the ending the saga deserves. It was not.

I saw Star Wars -- that's what we called it back then -- on opening day in the summer of 1977. Then I saw it the next day. Then I saw it again in another town. And finally my home town (Family vacation, you see). I watched the Star Wars Christmas Special on television until after Jefferson Starship performance and lusted after every Kenner toy as much as I did Carrie FIsher. The magic died along time ago, far, far away.

"space wizards against space nazis" sounds like a movie that should be made in itself... however, i tend to sympathize with those who say that star wars is modern mythology. the only sad thing about it is the level of antagonism that the subject raises among people. i also think that this trilogy symulataneously remakes and ignores the original. closure was reached with return of the jedi.

No without context, world building or even nuances, something that the Sequels trilogy totally lacks.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who's disappointed that Rise of Skywalker tried to undo so much of Last Jedi because it didn't need undoing. Whatever you think of Last Jedi, it was trying to do so much more than just fanservice. I kinda wish I could see how RoS turned out if Colin Trevorrow had stayed on, it might've been more interesting.

Before I post my thoughts, I have to first state: I still respect you, but I have to respectfully disagree with your review of the movie, being a fan of Star Wars, even to the point I wrote my own Improved Sequel Trilogy just as a form of closure after seeing this movie and how to disrespected the original trilogy. So, please don't think this is me saying I'm a bigger SW fan than you, this is just me posting a comment about my own opinions and how we differ, while hopefully still having respect for one another. If you like I could share my improved version, so you can judge it for yourself, and tell me if you like/love it or hate it. Anyway, on with the comment... Dude, I still don't understand why you like the Last Jedi, because I assumed you would've backpedaled and realized how shit this franchise has become, due to piss-poor writing and overall lacked no plans. I'm still somewhat shocked you're not enraged over this franchise, especially with the ending. No, Rey is not a fucking Skywalker, she is a damn Palpatine, she should've just embraced the fact she is the Palpatine, and vow to make the name her own and be a Good Palpatine. So, she steals the Falcon, Chewbacca, Luke's lightsaber, and now Luke's fucking surname...I seriously don't understand you, Sean, like how can you still wear Star Wars Merch and say this movie is fine? When I finally watched this, with the aid of Rifftrax Commentary (had some good laughs), I felt like Star Wars needed to end, especially with the Prequels, they may not have a perfect ending to the franchise, though still an ending, these sequels don't assure me that Star Wars can still keep going for generations. Especially with Kathleen Kenndy destroying everything that was good about Star Wars with her Identity Politics, and making a Mary Sue character "Rey" without giving her any kind of depth or challenges to make me wanna root for her. There is a reason why I still love the original Star Wars saga, and that was because the main trio was likable and relatable, I witness their struggles, their defeats, and how they overcome the odds. I walked away from this, feeling disgusted, and depressed because the original trio was dragged through the mud and was killed off without a proper send-off.

I'm glad you liked the Last jedi I really disliked it, that film completely split the fan base. I like some of the ideas in the last jedi but the story is terrible. I will not be watching the rise of Skywalker because of the last jedi. Disney obviously didn't plan out this trilogy which is really stupid.
