I deliberately didn't watch Cradle of Filth's set at Bloodstock in 2021 so I could have this first time reaction. So what better performance to watch than the one I missed?! Cradle of Filth is an extreme metal band sometimes labeled as "gothic black metal" and all I can think about are zombies and vampires. Let's see if this performance from Dani Filth can give me a fix of some harsh vocals!
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to Cradle of Filth for the first time, performing "Nymphetamine”.

Hey everyone! I recognize this isn't the version that all of you wanted and can appreciate that. I chose this version specifically because I was there at Bloodstock, I would have seen this performance as my very first time of exposure CoF anyhow, and it has excellent production quality. So, this made sense to me. I will go back and listen to the studio recording in my own time, so thank you for all of those recommendations!

Since we're jumping into Cradle of Filth, I REALLY want to call out their first backup vocalist, who is largely forgotten about -- Sara Jezebel Deva. Her vocals were absolutely fantastic in the band. I really want to recommend the song "The Black Goddess Rises II" (make sure II, not the original). The first few minutes are alright, but then it switches over to the symphonic part, and she REALLY shows up for the vocal passages. Since there's no video, might not make for great content, but would make for a fun listen.

Dani's voice is clearly toast but what he goes for these days still works really well for the music. He's a smart guy and while he physically can't hit those insane highs anymore, he knows what to do to still make the song work. "Watching a story unfold more than I'm listening to a song..." Yes, that is exactly the foundation, and core of Dani's writing. He's a novelist that chose music instead, and he puts all contrasts of his creativity in the stories he crafts or renditions through the music. One of their best albums is Godspeed on Devil's Thunder as it tells a horrific story of Gilles de Rais a French Knight and companion to Joan of Arc, whom was later convicted a serial rapist and murderer of children after the loss of Joan of Arc drove him to insanity.

As for Annabelle Iratni, that might just be true since she was just in the band at the time. As for Dani, I think that was his intended performance, balanced between different musical traditions, timing, breathing, maxing out... In light of that, not liking his delivery might be more a question of taste than objective quality. But it has struck me that the band relies pretty heavily on production value, including "perfect" vocal takes. For one thing, their core musicians seem to have started delivering just recently. The only one to have given me goosebumps live in that band was the first female vocalist, Sarah "Jezebel Deva" Ferrige.

Wow! You actually reacted to Cradle of Filth! You are awesome! Beauty and the Beast stuff going on here! Beautiful in a sort of jarring way. Impossible to describe it, but even at their heaviest and most dissonent, Cradle of Filth provokes an atmosphere of dark beauty. There is also a very deep mystique and sense of occult wonder in their sound, and the lyrics. It keeps you coming back because you hear something new every time, and Dani's lyrics are sheer poetry! How this man remembers all these lyrics is beyond me... Not just remembering them but acting out the character behind the meaning of them, because very often their songs are like plays of Diabobolical Theater so to speak... Freaking excellent stuff, and VERY alluring and inviting. You just want to go back to it, and each time you do you are rewarded with something you didn't notice last time. What seemed dissonant the first time will begin coming together at about the third listen, and it all makes sense. This is even more apparent with their earlier music; the newer stuff is way more easier to digest. I recommend you listen to Cruelty and the Beast.

I love that you had this one on here, I've been a fan of CoF since the 90's, and I think I may be able to help you understand Dani's high vocal. I've performed several CoF covers in my life and found the best way to achieve that sound with adequate control is to essentially "scream like a girl" while focusing tension around the epiglottis, forcing the sound through. Even done properly, it's going to accumulate massive damage over time....twas the sacrifice of Dani in order to bring to us something truly unique and wonderful.

I always enjoyed his staccato style of vocalizing. Probably my favorite of his performances is on the album version of "Lord Abortion". He runs through most of his tools. And the riffs are pretty viscous and dynamic.

Awww yes! I have imaged you reacting to Cradle but I always imagined The Forest. That's crazy tho. That's crazy right? Right?? I'm glad to see/listen to this. Thanks for the always awesome content.

I've been waiting for you to do Cradle Of Filth forever and I completely understand why this is the first video you chose but please consider doing a reaction of Cradle Of Filth doing Cruelty Brought Thee Orchids live 1998 you won't be disappointed I literally would die to see your reaction to the way Dani sings in that video my friend. By far the best Cradle Of Filth recording ever... 🖤💜

I've never heard a live performance of theirs that compares to the album version which is something you can say about many bands but CoF is one who through the magic of studio editing most importantly track layering create music that can't be heard anywhere else not even when they're playing it. The magic in their music comes forth in the studio and it is their recordings that truly shine. They still have enjoyable stage sets but they're a different animal on record. The high pitched tones you were noting is the Dani Filth cat screech that used to be the majority of his vocals. His voice has changed with age but except for some death metal style vocals on the early demos the screech was how he sung everything. For the best example check out "Hosannas in extremis(The Rape and Ruin of Angels) from the Vempire mini CD. I haven't been that into them since the Midian album but everything from Vempire to Midian is a masterpiece and there are so many amazing songs that showcase his vocal range and the creative genius of the band and of course the sound editors.
