I was the director of this concert and edited half of it while my editor cut the other half (it was videotape in those days, not discs and hard drives, plus the usual time constraints). Listening to John's voice and songs for a month was a joy! I also directed and edited That's Freedom, Chain Reaction and Talk of the Town music videos. He remains in the top 3 of my favourite artists I ever worked with/for. An absolute icon here in Australia, and what you see is what you get. Legend.

Thanks for the reaction! It's an awesome, upbeat and motivating song, and John wrote it! :) LRB were very big in their day, overseas as well as in Australia. You'd probably know some of their songs - Reminiscing was one of their biggest. Glenn Shorrock was their original singer during the height of their fame, and then John was with them for around 2-3 years in the early 80s. It wasn't his happiest time, and this song was partly written about him kind of wanting to get out. Regardless of not being his happiest time, he still put his all into every performance with them, as that's just what he does, and you can still see the joy on his face when he's singing with them. It's worth checking out some songs - it's a pretty different style for John, but he does an amazing job as always. John is an absolute icon in the Australian music industry & anyone who’s been to his concerts over the years always knew that he would NEVER let his fans down & absolutely gave it his all every time. Sadly, he’s gone through some health battles recently but thankfully he’s still with us ✊😌🇦🇺. If you want to see him crank it up a notch, check him out singing the monster AC/DC hit “It’s a long way to the top”. He’s performed it countless times with his band & he’s also performed it with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. Yes, you read right.. He got an ORCHESTRA playing AC/DC. I think this is my favourite John Farnham song. So high energy. It really draws you into that mood, motivational, defiant, confident, victorious. It's so much fun to listen to at a volume so loud you can't hear your own voice belting it out.

This is one of my favorite songs by John, so powerful, so inspiring. John is the greatest and most versatile male vocalist of all time and the band members and backing vocals the best of the best. You really need to look more into John and yes even when he was in “little river band he did some great stuff. A great song from John”let me out” is so great(live performance) vocal and musically. Great vocals, epic guitar solo from Brett Garsed and the rest of the band also epic. Also “chain reaction” great song(live) with like a 5 minute harmonica solo, it’s a must see.

Great reaction Nina 👍 Playing To Win yes was originally released when John was lead singer of the Aussie supergroup the Little River Band in 1984 . John replaced the original lead singer Glenn Shorrock in 1982 after he was fried from the band . John and LRB shared the same management so the obvious choice was ask John to join the band . There was many conflicting egos within LRB , Playing To Win is about John’s frustration with some of the members holding him back . This is John telling them to get out his way. The same LRB members was responsible for sticking down John’s microphone lead and stand restricting his movement on the stage . These LRB members so jealousy paranoid by their egos they believed that John was deliberately outshining the rest of the band . John was even criticised by band members for being to middle of the road for the band . But John with this song ended up writing LRB’s most hardest hitting rock song . LRB was originally a soft harmony yacht rock band that was massive in North America during the late 70s and early 80s . Playing To Win is John’s signature LRB song even that it wasn’t that successful at the time of release. After John left LRB in 1986 and his solo career took off beyond everyone’s imagination Playing To Win as gained popularity being the only LRB song that John would sing every concert , and the song gained popularity being used in many different sporting events promotions the song has become a popular sporting anthem in Australia.

John Farnham was a replacement for Glen Shorrock for a short time in LRB. After he left he worked hard on the Whispering Jack album for his comeback :)

Glen Shorrock is another Aussie legend rabbit hole worth falling down, a generation before Farnsie, particularly with the 60's band Axiom where he partnered with another Ausrock foundation Brian Cadd.

This song has a geometry that my brain just loves, it's so frickin cool and it's my favourite among many very great songs of John's. It's very much worth listening to some LRB, they were a vey tight band with lots of vocal harmonies that I'm sure you'd love. My favourite is Reminiscing with John on vocals, even though it was originally recorded by Glenn Shorrock. Thankyou, I am a huge Jonh Farnham Fan. One of my favourite songs he does is an old Beatles song called " One", He sings it in a very different way than the Beatles did. If you haven't heard it, it is well worth hearing. I have over 30 CD's, so just about every song John ever recorded! If you want a song you haven't got let me know, I'll see if I have it.

Glen shorrock was the original lead singer through the 70's and early 80's. Glenn Left and John took over for a few years in the mid 80's. LRB is and Aussie band that had huge success in the US. They were super tight and had amazing harmonies. John had a bit of a hard time there as some of them didn't like his showmanship on stage and even taped his Mike stand to the stage to stop him moving around so much. When John left a few of the guys came back to Australia with him and are on stage with him in this show. This is off the top of my head so, feel free to correct me or add bits. But keep your hate to yourself please if any of this is not perfectly correct. 🤔😘

John co- wrote this song about his time with LRB. It was about his unhappy discontent with the band which he joined after Glenn Shorrock left. There was much politiking and power moves in the band and some did not like John's natural limelight performances. They tried to clip his wings and their lounge music contained and limited John's vocal and physical expression on stage. Some even secretly taped down the microphone lead to prevent John's movement. A number of the LRB members followed John to be in his band on stage here.

John had two periods of popular success. He had a no. 1 hit in Australia in 1967 at age 18 with Sadie the Cleaning Lady and had a few solid years as a pretty young boy who was a teenage idol. Obviously, he came back as a man in control of his craft with You're the Voice and the album, Whispering Jack in 1986. This first came out in 1985 - the absolute nadir of his commercial success - and peaked at no. 38. Clearly it has grown in popularity like an underground cult classic movie since then. I don't know why it didn't succeed at first. Perhaps LRB was too small. Too much of a "pub band". The song clearly shines as "stadium rock".
