Vocal Coach Ken Tamplin Reacts to Axl Rose / Guns N Roses - Paradise City
Vocal Coach Reaction To Axl Rose - Guns N Roses - Paradise City - Ken Tamplin
I remember when I first heard Guns n Roses.
It was on a local radio station in Los Angeles called KNAC Radio.
Tawn Mastrey, one of the DJs at the station had Introduced Paradise City and G n R.
It was ironic because a couple of weekends prior I was at a rock Magazine benefit concert in Hollywood at the Troubadour where many LA musicians including Slash, Tracii Gunns of LA Guns and others we're performing to a half empty House.
Axl had shown up to sing a couple songs as well.
It wasn't but a few weeks later that guns and roses went from playing half full very small Hollywood venues to blowing up arenas around the world.
I'm not trying to play the grandpa card here but I think it is noteworthy:
To be candid, there were many popular bands at this time. And Guns N Roses were in about the middle of the pack.
For example, GnR, Motley Crue, Poison, Jane's Addiction, Van Halen, Ratt, WASP, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Quiet Riot, (not to forget The Bangles, Circle Jerks (punk), Social Distortion (punk), The Blasters (Rockabilly), Los Lobos, The Dickies) and many many other bands.
It was an explosion of music.
Of all those bands, few snuck by the gatekeepers who set out to pasture most of these LA trendsetters.
Those bands of course were Van Halen, G n R, Motely Crue and Red Hot Chili Peppers.
So I thought it would be fun to do a reaction to Axl Rose / GnR being homies from my back yard in LA.
I hope you find this vocal coach reaction informative and even entertaining. :-)

Axl was not much of a smoker even though you did see him with cigarettes often. He smoked because he got paid to when he was poor in LA. The other guys had more addictive personalities than Axl. He didn't want anything to control him, like an addiction.

Already had heard Sweet Child O’ Mine, Paradise City and Welcome To The Jungle, for me the other stand out tracks were Night Train and Mr Brownstone (then didn’t know it was about heroin) were stand out tracks. But also wow My Michelle and Sweet Child o’ Mine went so well together in the track listing.

It's actually really amazing how much Axl isn't blurring words together when singing it. With how fast those words are. I saw them open for the Stones at the Colosseum in the early 90's. I got a bit too relaxed so I got a real good look at the ground for a while. Then I remember coming alert to hear Axl singing this song. I look up to see Axl singing and doing those special Axl Rose dance steps across the stage wearing a pair of chaps and a studded cod piece.. He was pasty white, skinny and looking like a junky and he's dancing and jerking toward the front of the stage and all of a sudden he stops, turns around and his bare ass is out in the wind. I wasn't ready to see that no matter how relaxed I was. Man that put me off my feed for a while.

I had a good choir teacher in high school he had the proof that he could sing and teach what he was doing, he was “classically trained” so he taught using the MASK, singing through your nose always felt so limiting to me though I didn’t know anything else. Over the years watching you ive learned it’s not always the case relaxing from the throat has so much more power when you do everything else.

Ken, do you think the excessive nasality Axl employed in his younger days played a part in him not being able to sing as well later on?
@lonelyvariety

Aditya Rangarajan singing nasally isn’t proper technique but he had good control over it so not sure if it caused any damage

He did fine into his '50s, despite damaging technique. Listen to some 2006 and 2012 performances.

@@fridz66 I think he can still sound awesome for a song or two, but can't sustain it for a whole concert, which is why he saves it to get through 3 hours. He onlh really seems to push it on the signature songs. But hey, there's shit that I could do easily in my twenties that I struggle with now that I'm 11 years into my 40s 😁

Axl's vocals haven't aged well (unique nasal tone). These are still classic songs and they take me back to my childhood and the first time I heard them and they still sound amazing. The band still has got it today. I love to hear Slash burn it up. I was listening to your early stuff at the same time as this and (not to sound like I'm blowing smoke), but your vocals and guitar playing was always WAY better than this. I truly count it a privilege to have grown up in the 80's with so many amazing musicians and singers. Keep it coming brother! God Bless :-)
