Is this love?
Well, it probably is. You’ve heard me say, many times, that David Coverdale is one of my all-time favorite singers. Best known for his work in Whitesnake, which was formed after a stint with Deep Purple, Coverdale’s vocals have a powerful blues tinged flavor; warm and velvety.
The power ballad, “Is This Love?” has become a mainstay in Whitesnake’s live shows since 1987 and was a hit for the band, reaching number two on the US singles chart, making it their second biggest hit after, “Here I go Again”. Coverdale has confirmed that the song was originally written for Tina Turner.
Check out my versions where I demonstrate the kind of compression/ distortion he uses, and how to achieve it safely. I can’t guarantee that you’ll have Tawny Kitaen rolling around on your Jaguar but I do hope you enjoy them. Let’s rock!

Actually this video is from 2004 and Coverdale is 52 years old here. He's 67 now and sounds a little different but I would say he's still killing it for his age.

When i saw him in 2016... he was ON .. totally balls out ... When he screamed are you ready , i knew he was here to killing it As european , the Updating of his pre 1987 gritt ( and post 1991 gritt) dont bother me at all as opposite as a lot of people on youtube , but it was great singing and Agression when i saw him .. 1987 fans dont get it , but David never really sang Clean , he always sang " shot " .. Howlin wolf , gutty stuff . I saw some show this year . On moscow , he killed it , in Argentina , he was on , despite you feel and see even on playing and Faces the tiring .. for everybody , not just David , even Tommy . Even joel . but still good . I was surprised . Hey he s touring for 2 years now... at his age . Its quite admirable .

This live DVD was recorded in 2004. So, Coverdale was around 53/54 years old at the time. That being said, the cover of Burn on that DVD is still burnt on my brain. Doug Aldrich and Reb Beach absolutely smashed it.

FINALLY someone talks about Coverdale being in Deep Purple!!! Thank you! You are incredible and I love all your videos, but that Deep Purple mention made me really happy. His work with them goes ignored a lot, but it was so good. If you're doing more Coverdale, please consider Soldier of Fortune.

I have this live dvd from Hammersmith Apollo in 2006 .Mr coverdale was amazing in every song from this konsert . Unfortunately his voice has left the building in recent years. And that's really sad. He was one of the best rock singer of all time.

Met Doug a couple of times recently, last time he walked away from his M&G queue when he recognised me standing nearby......we chatted about a great friend of mine who was babysitting his grandkids that night, Doug said, tell him babysitting is cool and I’ll catch him soon. Love David Coverdale. I remember Deep Purple very well, and my dad shouting "Turn that bloody music down." Ahh happy days, great music, great singers, great musicians. Funny how music transports you back to those great times in your life, maybe not for my dad RIP dad.

Being in a former local rock band a few decades ago and binge watching your videos over the nights brings lots of positive fun for me during the times we are living in. Thank you Ken! Makes me want to go back and want to play again. Very inspiring! Your Lou Gramm stuff are some of my favorites. I would love if you did "Starrider"... The late 1970's concert where I think you covered hot blooded... I think it was the same show. The band was so locked in that night. The mix and engineering were as well.

David, Klaus, and Paul Rodgers are freaks of nature. Amazing their voices sound like they haven't aged. I guess it is because they use proper technique. As always Ken thank you for sharing your insights and providing us with a wealth of information in helping us on our journey to be the best singers we can be. PS I love the shirt Coach. Rock on!

I saw their Liquor and Poker Tour with backstage passes (Memphis 1990). I love David! All time favorite rocker. Steve Vai, Tommy Aldridge, Rudy Sarzo along with Coverdale were the ultimate gentlemen and consummate musicians. As a percussionist myself, Tommy Aldridge remains at the top of my list of all time favorite trumpeter. Thank you for sharing!

Whitesnake fan here. Started listening to them around 87 when that album came out. I was in 11th grade. I find myself going way back to their early days. I like the bands more bluesy sound. Much better in my opinion. And that lineup of Moody, and Marsden are my favorite guitar players.

Okay, I did not expect to hear that voice come out of him. I didn't realize he was around 67 here. So that's impressive, his voice sounds good. I didn't know he could sing like this, but sometimes that comes with age, and it's not a bad thing. I was expecting Whitesnake from the MTV days, with Tawny Kitaen on the front of the car. Great song, thanks for breaking down these songs.

Every time they play Here I Go Again on the radio, which is like every single day here in WA, I always mutter to myself, "Aargh, why don't they play Is This Love?" It's just one of those songs that transcends whatever you may think of 80's mid tempo metal ballads. It just kills every time I hear it.

Awesome Ken. I first saw David Coverdale with Deep Purple back in 1973 & still have the concert ticket stubb. I also know that a guitarist by the name of Reb Beach played in Whitesnake. Reb played guitar on the Alice Cooper album The Last Temptation. Just wanted to share~!

Awesome story of how you met Doug. The entire band was awesome. Tommy is one of my favorite drummers. Tommy is a beast behind the kit. His double bass drum work is phenomenal. Coverdale is also one of my favorite singers. Loved his work in Deep Purple too. And speaking of John Sykes I really like the collaboration he did with the band Blue Murder. Paul Rodgers comes to mind as well and is a great singer. Being in Free and Bad Company, they were all great and still are. I'd like to see you cover some stuff with Rik Emmit from Triumph. Or, maybe some Steve Marriot and Humble Pie. John Waite and The Babys. LOL, I'm showing my age. Keep on rocking' Ken.

Coverdale is a master rock vocalist. Lanny and Doug are absolute monster guitar players. You and Scott V Z can hold your own against them for sure. Wake the Nations was one of your best albums! The track from You/Shout "In Your Face" is a smorgasbord of who's who guest guitar players. Oh, and your vocals aren't half bad either, all over both albums brother ;-) Love your stories and insight during these videos. Steve Morse was a big influence on my guitar playing growing up as were you. I can't play nearly as good as either of you, but love to hear you guys burn! God bless and Rock on!

I seen Whitesnake live a few years back, and it was my favorite live performance. This is coming from a 55 year old guy, who has been to dozens of concerts. Van Halen with Sammy was right up there, Journey, Def Leppard, Foreigner, Metallica, Styx, Motley Crue, Dokken, Ratt etc...but Whitesnake killed it that night about three years ago. Coverdale must have taken care of his voice through the years.

Uriah Duffy on bass. My son toured Europe and Canada with his monster brother bassist, board player, and singer, Dorian Duffy. One of our locals that was at my shows is now David’s guitarist. Doug is my all time favorite guitarist in the world. Joel Hoekstra is the guitarist now. He’s also in Trans Siberian Orchestra. I’m a sucker for the back stories Ken. I know a few myself with George Lynch and Oni Logan who I’ve met through an old singer until I had a terrible neck surgery. I was going to play in a Whitesnake Tribute Band but I just don’t care to do tribute bands. Don’t forget the late great Cozy Powell! Pray that brother’s in the Lord.

I grew up with Deep Purple and really liked Coverdale as a singer, but somehow he always was better in the studio then live. But for me he and Dio are the greates rocksingers from this era.

Coverdale , what a vibrato ,this old record , ...the song called child of babylon ...the way he sings "babyloooooon " ! when i was young i became crazy ! " babyloooon" ! lol (im old now ) ! but im always crazy !

Awesome. I saw them with Motley Crue a long time ago. You brought up Joe Lynn Turner! When I mention him, nobody knows who he is. It’s frustrating when the greats are not noticed or remembered.

I saw Whitesnake in Venezuela, they played before Judas Priest and I have to say Whitesnake live sound is amazing they brought for that tour in 2011 a drummer call Bryan Tichy that guy is simply outstanding also the other guitar player from Winger Reb Beach wowwwww man what a great show I have to say one of the best shows I've ever seen.
