I'd highly recommend looking at them again, this is a horrible video. I've seen them live and as much as I dislike their new stuff, Ivan has a fantastic voice. Look at the album version of this(even the live version of this they have on the album) Far From Home, Remember Everything, Stranger Than Fiction, Hard to See. Ivan has a very rock opera style voice and can soar to some notes with a unique scream Also, check out Pop Evil- Waking Lions

One note on being sensible at gigs - I go to a lot of shows, and the best thing is to get a good pair of earplugs. Not the crappy foam ones they sell for 2 bucks at the venue, but good quality reusable ones (you can get a very good pair online for $15 or so). Not only will they preserve your hearing (which you really don't want to lose), but they'll cancel out the noise of the crowd, which has a side effect of making you scream less, because people have a tendency to shout to be heard over the people around them so they can hear themselves. So when you can hear yourself, you tend not to shout/scream. Ever since I started with good quality earplugs several years back, I find I'm not only able to hear these sorts of loud concerts much better, but I go home without any ringing or fuzziness in my ears, and my voice doesn't hurt. Also, agree with some others here that this was a particularly poor example of FFDP live - I've seen them a few times and they are generally better than this. But even so, I thought it was a very fair, even generous reaction.

Your warning about straining your voice at gigs made me smile.Up until a few years ago I would lose my voice for a day or two after every live gig I saw.The result of screaming at the top of my lungs and trying to sing along to the likes of Iron Maiden,Motorhead,Rainbow,Dio,Black Sabbath,Deep Purple,Rush and many, many more over the years. It's just as well that I've been getting into folk music in recent years. It's definitely easier on your vocal cords lol.(Still like to listen to my old metal/hard rock stuff though.)

I love the way you said “beards”! I will say that I agree with the criticisms. This type of metal isn’t what I’d call vocal perfection, and FFDP is not really a band that is driven by technical vocals. There are styles of metal that are, of course. It’s not easy to learn how to scream like that, and I suspect in many cases it’s not good for the voice because they aren’t producing it in a good way.

Ticked that like box. It would be interesting to see your take on the FFDP song Lift Me Up because it has Rob Halford from Judas Priest on guest vocals and he comes in like a thunderstorm after Ivan's part. The contrast between styles is staggering when you put them next to each other in the same song, especially in how they both handle the chorus differently.

Not a great song to start with and definitely not a good (from a technical stand-point etc) performance of said song - Ivan is a good lead more so than a good singer, his voice is incredibly distinctive and powerful and he has great stage presence. I'd love to see some more Opeth, Ghost of Perdition and Demon of the Fall both have very good live performances on youtube. Another video you should definitely consider is "Contaminate Me" by Leprous live at the Rockafeller, a great song with Ihsahn who's another one of the absolute best.

This is literally their best song. Im not just saying this. This song is off of their first album and is 100 times better than anything off of the last 4 albums. This is why they still play this song at concerts. You dont here any other Way of the Fist (their best album by far) song. American Calitalist (Album #3) is when they became sellouts. Listen to Way of the Fist, then listen to the Pride. Big difference.

Been a ffdp fanatic from day one.. love what they stand for.. love who they employ.. I feel every song they put out.. to me this is what music should command. I can't get into iron maiden and it's opera style.. Pantera, lamb of god, Godsmack, Metallica, sepeltura, slipknot.. it's music like that that drives me everyday

Hey Beth keep up the good work but a tip from me to you is to look up false cord techniques (that’s the heavy metal screaming) hope this helps and I hope you enjoy your day :)

Hi Beth. 5FDP is a pretty cool band. Their song Lift Me Up is amazing. Rob Halford is a guest singer on it. His voice is one of the best and most iconic in metal. You mentioned the guy who lost his voice after an Iron Maiden concert. That happened to me after one of their concerts when I was a kid.

Absolutely nothing special about this band or singer. Your lack of reaction says it all.

Not sure why someone thought this was worth analyzing vocally, plus it's a boring song. There's some 5FDP songs I like, but not this. And really, for this style, Pantera or Gojira would have been a much better pick.

This band is actually vey talented, but i do think its not the best representation of them. Good example is disturbed the sound of silence. I dont find them very good live but that video says different.

The band has lost what made them good. But Ivan is a great vocalists, this is just an absolutely horrible video and they can barely hear his mic. She should've listened to an album version or one of the live performances that are on the albums because they are EQ'd properly

no style...lead singer’s screaming and growling has its place but not in this song. A totally forgetful performance. Al

The other reason people can do themselves a mischief is that when it's really loud and you can't hear yourself, it's hard to tell how much you're pushing your voice - or you want to give that bit extra so that you *can* hear yourself. I know this more from the pub than from gigs!

I've seen them live a few times. This sounds like maybe the end of a few long weeks on tour maybe a few dates too close together. I see that others are recommending Killswitch Engage, End of Heart ache. I really think you would enjoy it.
