He said in an interview he regreted the fact they made this 1 and half tone up at the end, because it was impossible to sing live each night. I think he s a wonderful singer, even now it s difficult.

Jon Bon Jovi has most definitively vocal issues, unfortunately. However, what impresses me with him (especially in his younger days) and other rock players is how they are able to jump and run all over the stage and sing at the same time.

This was 2012. I last saw them live 2019 and unfortunately you can tell his voice has suffered. However still an amazing band (even without Richie) and Jon is a wonderful man. Also worth noting that he always does Livin’ on a Prayer as an encore now so his it’s an easy one to rest his voice on and let us the fans do the hard work, cos you know we’re singing along anyway! 💕

This iconic old song has come full circle. It's about not having enough physically, but living on the intangibles - memories, love and hope. We all know about the vocal decline, culminating in the 2022 tour. But the fans were there for him anyway, and why? The intangibles they lived through, the memories, the love of a true artist that wrote and sang the anthems of their lives. I'm not a Bon Jovi fan per se, but I do get it.

He still sounds pretty damn good but a little more subdued as he's getting up in age. I saw them in concert for this tour and it was absolutely incredible!

You know what you’re talking about, and that kind in depth knowledge and ability, not only to analyse, but to ability to explain, in layman’s terms, what s happening, the physiology of how the voice s created, is a gift. I like that he knows that age/lifestyle has limited his range a little and brings the audience in to be a part of the song. Better that then having backing singers make it obvious its not him or try and fake it with autotune live

He stopped singing that particular part of the song somewhere around 91/92. It was killing his vocal cords & he wound up getting steroid injections, which were risky/not done before (at the time). He came back after some time off with Keep the Faith & you can tell the voice (after injections) was a bit deeper & the highs weren't as high as the past. Despite that he still rocked on for decades, a legend.

He used those steroids in 1987 during the Slippery Tour before the New Jersey album was released. So way before their hiatus and the Keep The Faith album.

I'm not a professional vocal coach, but I am a huge Bon Jovi fan and his voice was pretty god damn good from 2007 through the first half of 2013. In that first half Richie Sambora left the band and everyone can see the harmony that they can share on stage in many places in their songs. Well, by the end of the tour his voice was shot and he struggled quite a bit. He might have tried to compensate for Richie not being their, or it could be stress related in not having his right hand with him anymore. Again, I'm not a professional, but that's just what runs through my mind as a possibility. Though maybe 2013 accelerated what you point out what seemed to be the beginning of the downturn.

Great reaction. Like Bon Jovi, I'm from New Jersey. In fact, one of their videos was filmed on a boardwalk that I've been to many times. I'm also old enough to remember when they started so I've been very aware of them for decades. Because they were so oversaturated (especially here) back in the '80s, when I was in my teens, I never really appreciated JBJ as a singer or songwriter until recently. The songs are absolute classics and I think he sounds just as good now as he did back in the day, especially on his more recent songs, where he's writing for his voice as it is now.

I have seen them in concert twice, both times were epic. I definitely think (though I have zero background in singing and I could be wrong) that he is a self taught singer and amazing at it. BUT a self taught person may not always know how to preserve/take care of their voices in the best way. I do know that he is a long term smoker and has always made it a point not to be photographed smoking, so that definitely has impacted his voice some as well.

Thanks for sharing, very interesting and informative. Here in Detroit, we actually got to hear BonJovi before most of the country. We had a local radio DJ who was connected to some guys in the New York/New Jersey music scene and he got hold of an early version of Bonjovi's first single, Runaway, about 12-18 months before it was widely released and became a huge hit. I don't know about that. On Long Island we heard "Runaway" first. It was a radio station called WAPP in Long Island City that Jon went to and asked him to play the single before he had a band. That was the first airplay he ever got. He worked at his cousins recording studio "The Power Station" and recorded it there. There's a CD called The Power Station Years with all the songs he recorded there. He was about 19 or 20. For albums he did "The Pizza Jury" in New Jersey. They heard the songs first and would vote what songs went on albums. So getting back to your statement. The NJ pizza jury heard the songs first. Which did take place in a pizzeria with a listening party. I know a lot of the Bon Jovi history. A friend of mine from NJ worked for his official fan club and was his photographer. I also met his mother several times and we'd talk about it. I met Jon quite a few times too. I'm just making a correction. I was in his fan club.. On the trips we'd hear music before it was released. We also saw his movie "Moonlight and Valentino" at a private screening before it was released. There's benefits to being in "His" fan club.

I did not state that we got to hear Bonjovi first, I stated that we go to hear them before most of the country. Whoever the local DJ here knew there he got either the version you in NJ/NY heard, or one of the demo versions. Regardless, I never stated that we heard them first, only before most of the country. I stated nothing incorrect nor false.

Beth, I horribly missed the chance to tell you this when you made your video of Freddy Mercury and certainly not gonna make the same mistake this time, so here it is: EXCELLENT JOB. I've learned a lot of the singing world since I follow your videos, and I specially thank you for 3 of them so far: your video of José José (El Triste), Freddy Mercury's video and this one of Jon Bon Jovi. These 3 people and their singing are very important part of my life's soundtrack. Can't wait for the next one.

I believe that having good backing vocalists added to the band would make it work. However getting the crowd to sing along at the difficult parts somewhat means it is a part of the band too. Long live JBJ!

John has been able to hit the high notes on this song since the early 80’s. Richie Sanbora had to preform that section ever since. This song made John and hurt him as well. He has been working with vocal coach since he hurt his voice but the high notes have never really come back.

Hi Beth, interesting reaction. Would be interested to see you react to one of his songs much more recent say 2019 onwards. His voice has definitely suffered and frankly it's pretty well gone now. They always had a reputation for being one of the world's hardest working bands and I guess that would always come home to roost. I'm a big Jovi fan and will always appreciate all the good stuff they have done over the years. Great channel 👍🏻

Saw Bon Jovi in Brisbane, Australia in 2015, open air concert with about 60,000 people. His voice was still amazing, great band and have listened to them for years

2015 is nowhere near "amazing" because amazing was the 80s and 90s.......the downhill started around the 2000s. Some people can't hear the difference but if you listen to this song live in the 80s version on KZfaq and then straight away listen to a live version after the year 2000 you will notice a significant difference. Smoking is Jon's downfall and not looking after his voice.....lost his range, lost the bite and edge.....now he has to retrain how he sings and still will never ever go back to his vocal prime.....he no longer can sing and move around the stage like the rock god he was because he can only hit notes standing still now.......even that not very high notes.

I love their “This Left Feels Right” album. Its basically an acoustic greatest hits album. I picked it up from a music store back in 2003 shortly after it had released. I was pissed when I realized it wasn’t the normal versions of the songs but I quickly fell in love with it. Specifically It’s My Life, Bed of Roses, and I’ll Be There for You just hit differently on the album. I don’t think a lot of his music was meant to have such a fast tempo. It’s just what was popular at the time.

Really? It's the only album I don't listen to. Apart from IML, I found every song inferior to the original. They should have just done acoustics versions, rather than changing them altogether.

One of the greatest songs and bands of the greatest decade of music, The 1980's. Alot of people don't know that back in the late 1990s early 2000s he either fully or partially owned the Arena Football League team the Phiadelphia Soul. ROCK ON BON JOVI ROCK ON!!!!!!!

One of the things I noticed; the live recording sounds amazing. It seems to be all too common a live set will be remastered, and all the character and dynamics of it being live are lost...it's not happened here. :D David Gilmour uses a Voice Box in several songs; such a cool sound.

In my opinion the best livin on a prayer performance was in the nassau colluseum in 1987 I was surprised on this performance because Richie sambora didn't use the talk box during the introduction of the song

It's called bounce or ring because all of the surfaces are solid -non porous they reflect audio waves .Another thing temperature, warm or hot bass waves speed up and the highs slow down it works the opposite when cold 60---70 degrees ,hi speeds up and bass slows down .there's more if you want to shoot the breeze!

PLEASE do a review react to John Farnham "Your the voice" or "burn for you" Aretha Franklin once said of John that "he has the most pitch perfect voice" hes also not only an icon of Australian music but is also an amazing gentle and generous man Bon Jovi has grown and become quite muture as he ages and thus has become more mature in his sound clarity and presentation....

I saw him singing live in july 2019 and it was an amazing show, I had great time, he is wonderful, but he can hardly sing in these big arenas... he jumps more than he actually sings, guitarist sings whole songs... still love him, don't get me wrong.

Great observations about Jon's voice, he was in vocal decline for quite a few years unfortunately and has just spoke about having major Vocal chord surgery. Don't think he's sung the high notes on prayer since about 1987.

Last sung them consistently in 1993. The last documented Prayer high note was in 1995.

If one wants to sing like, for instance (I call it caterwailing) Robert Plant, do the following: Meow like a cat. That creates a very specific vibration in the back of the throat. Simply expand on the cat's meow, control and extend the notes and voila! Robert Plant.

I agree with the comment of rock stars developing vocal issues. One that comes to mind is Van Morrison. He was great in the 70s, 80s and then towards the later 80s/90s his voice just plummeted man. Though in the 2010s I'd say he sounds way better than in the 90s. Must've maybe had vocal training to get it pretty solid again

Saw him live in 2013 and the show was great until he ended with Always. His lifestyle and age really showed as he tried to sing the whole song himself (not passing off parts to the audience) in key. Still was a great concert and had a lot of fun. The strain on his voice is more apparent now in the 2020s.

JBJ is one of the best singers of the history of Rock music. Richie Sambora (the guitarrista) is better singer than JBJ, he’s always support in the leading voice He’s singing in the original key….much respect
