Kurt told Rachel that he threw the Defying Gravity face off back in season one. She got upset because she based that win on every choice that she made after that on that win. So he was proving to her that he was just as good as she is.

Actually it was a bit ignorant of Kurt. He was the only one who had a problem with her. The other students seem to be enjoying her. He knew if she lost it could hurt her reputation/status. If Rachel did that to Kurt the fandom would have a fit.

@@suz2590 he wasn’t at all? she was being a diva and letting it all get to her head. he knew he needed to put her back in her lane before she did go and annoy the other students with her diva ways and if anything rachel was grateful kurt did that. he was being a good friend

@@swiftievich exactly! Rachel has always been a diva to the extreme, and it got worse before Kurt did this. He had to take her down a peg or she would have been miserable because she probably would have ended up taken advantage of by the fake friends, or losing all her real friends.

@@swiftievich We literally see the other student enjoying her singing. He was jealous she was getting attention and she used up the hot water. He also didn't like she spent time with those other guys over him. Yeah St Kurt so sweet to air their dirty laundry in public. A good friend does not try to knock you down. Again if the roles were reverse the fans would being looking for Rachel's head how dare she do that to Kurt he was just starting to be popular.

@@suz2590 it had nothing to do with him jealous she was popular, it was him seeing her surround herself with fake people using her like those two boys who didn’t actually wanna be her friend but use her for her fame. she was being intolerable and you know if kurt would never have done it at midnight madness rachel would’ve never listened.

Kurt really showcases his incredible deep register in "Being Alive". And the high notes in that song have exactly that mature dimension I think you're asking for.

If you want to analyze them more, you can look up their solo versions on iTunes, KZfaq, or Spotify. Gives you more to work with and to hear what each of them does more. Also of course they gave the big finish to Lea, that’s no surprise. But Chris gets the S5 defying gravity high note so I guess it’s even.

I feel that Kurt's voice sometimes gets to used to his normally more higher pitched songs and struggles to change his vocal range even tho we all know he can I feel that with this song u need to be able to go from head to chest voice quite often and in my opinion they are all to young to sing this although Rachel did very good as did Kurt but u reeeeaaallly need to be able to do a strong belt with this song at times

I'd really love for you to react to one of my fave Kurt's performances that is "Being Alive". Seriously I love that. I might be in the minority but I love Chris's lower range, especially with time (that is in season 4) it is so beautiful and so good. He feels songs so much and Sondheim is perfect for him. I'd be curious to know your opinion on it :)

I believe a counter tenor is higher than a high tenor. And a countertenor focuses much more like falsetto type of singing to begin with. I’m not sure she understands that when she criticizes him.

I don’t like The Way Lea did the last note at all. It sounded great but it’s supposed to be soft and head voicey. Since you were being so picky, you should’ve been picky about that.

Kurt does not need a deeper grip/placement, HIS whole thing/artistic identity is that light tone which would be messed up if u add more depth! the producers of the show obviously know what they're doing, otherwise Glee wouldn't be such a worldwide phenomenon

So in my opinion (Mainly as someone who loves this song so much) This was definitely a Kurt win. Rachel/Lea's big strength in her voice has always been her power, she can belt like crazy and she has a great tone, but in a song like this you need to start off so delicate and beautiful. It's a prayer. Kurt/Chris has an amazing amount of delicacy and control, his voice can sound so amazingly sweet, I just think his style is a lot more suitable for this song than Rachel's, who I think came in too hard and too dramatic. Just from their first lines each I knew I liked Kurt's a lot more because of how soft it started, in that high register he is so well known for.

You might want to save your singing to the end of the clip. You sound like your punching up and aren't close enough to the actors in sound. It's highly distracting and plays a bit ruder than I think you mean for it to be. You are telling them to sing more emotion while pulling your viewers out of the moments over and over again. The actors are supposed to be fresh out of high school and in their 1st years of arts collage, they are not in control of the emote part, the directors of glee are. It is also putting your voice and experience up against people who were much younger than you are at that time. Nice to see someone doing musical theater though.

While I think these competition duets are fun, I always like the solo versions better. Maybe because I think Kurt's version are always better than Rachel's and this cutting irritates me. And I think Kurt shows more subtle emotion in this song.

I pray I won’t get hate for this but I prefer Leah over Chris it’s just a personal preference nothing more and if you permit me to play Deadpool‘s advocate, the reason she does the little crying sound is because the de directors wanted her to do that because they liked it and they wanted to give rachel a distinctive vocal characteristic. oh and I meant to save devils, sorry, dictation.

@@Dr.LongMonkey I mean, neither did Lea Michele in the first three seasons and her voice is still remarkable. I think it's a taste thing, and not about his actual ability. It's why there's always an argument over who the best singer is, Rachel, Mercedes or Santana, it's preference.
