Something to note, nasal-pitched voices are part of the mechanical linguistics of singing/talking in Spanish. There's so many ā and ä sounds mixed with alveolar flaps and nasal consonants that you basically have to keep your voice pitched forward to pronounce everything correctly. It's something that tends to stick around when switching to other languages, too. I grew up within sight of Mexico, and nearly all the latino kids talked and sang more nasally. All of that to say: it's her character's voice, for sure, and it keeps her character sounding latina.

I read somewhere that Stephanie Beatriz brought her voice down like that to sound more like the character’s 15 year old speaking voice so there wouldn’t be a disconnect that you sometimes hear when adults voice children’s roles.

Yes, Casita is alive, I think it was like a symbolic representation of abuelo Pedro being there in spirit cuz he has like the huge portrait on the wall basically the house helps everyone in any way it can so their lives can be made easier especially abuelas after she first arrived at the Encanto.

My headcannon is that Pedro's spirit/life force is what empowers/animates Casita. Which means that Bruno's time behind the walls patching the cracks was time spent with his dad, helping keep things together.

super interesting analysis as usual! i’ve never heard Stephanie Beatriz sing outside of this movie, but I heard that apparently she was pregnant while recording these songs-I wonder if the changes in vocal tone you’re noticing between this song and Waiting On A Miracle is possibly because Family Madrigal was recorded earlier in her pregnancy, and she could open up her diaphragm more? idk this is pure speculation but I’d be interested to hear what she sounds like when she doesn’t have a baby taking up precious singing real estate lol

I think there must be different clips of this song (from different streaming services?) - I notice in some reactions the clip cuts off right at the end of the song. In others it goes on to include a few brief lines of dialogue following, without which I consider this song incomplete- ending with Dolores oh-so-casually “outing” Mirabel on the answer to the question she’s been trying (increasingly frenetically) to dodge:: she never got a gift.

my personal take on why "waiting on a miracle" sounds more nasal is because it makes the emotions feel more genuine. you try to sing while actually crying and getting a bit snotty, it's gonna sound basically like that song, way more in the nose. i practically cry watching it.

I forget which interview it was I watched, but somebody mentioned that they wanted specifically to have a wide range of vocals that a typical, non vocal student/professional, can feel confident singing. Hence the abundance of alto female singers and Maribel's nasal voice, as many, (no offence meant please, cause I am on of these too) everyday fans would sing that way easily.

I can't be certain but I believe the reason she has that closed, nasal sound is because she is a forty-year-old woman trying to sound like a 12 year old. She's having to tighten and close throat while pitching her voice up it's really wild for me to hear because, in the only other performance I know her from, she has her voice fits down pretty low to emote a strong, masculine quality. She works in this pinched voice and still manages a really dynamic performance full of lots of emotion. It is technically imperfect but it seems like a deliberate choice that brings the character to life. All at all, I think it might be one of the best vocal performances that I've ever heard from a person who is not a voice actor, normally I don't know if you have done "Surface Pressure," yet, but I feel like the voice actor for Louisa another fantastic performance using an exactly contrasting technique. A woman of a fairly slight build lowers the pitch of her voice and opens her throat into a cavern so that she can become the absolute mountain of a woman that is Louisa. It all serves to make this little voice nerd very happy

not sure if it could have had something to do with the change in her voice, but when the actress sang Waiting on a Miracle, she was 9 months pregnant and actually went into labor the next day.

So I've been listening to your reaction videos a while now (just subscribed btw) and I love how you break down each piece. I would absolutely love for you to do a reaction video to a new artist that just broke out of TikTok and released here first full original song "Baby Why", by Sarah Cothran, I've heard all kinds of different music as a DJ and when I say this girl is onto something big I think you'll agree.

Fun fact in the song “waiting on a miracle” the VA for Maribel was in labor while singing it, that might explain the way it sounds😊❤

Aww man I wanted to see her reaction on the end on the song tho.. but she cut the video and removed the part when dolores says "She didn't get a Gift".

This isn’t just a vocal performance - it’s a dramatic performance. Mirabel is emotionally bereft in “ Waiting on a Miracle” - the performer was also in labor during it.
