Karofsky was a closeted gay who bullied Kurt to hide that he was attracted to him. One day Kurt chased him into the locker room to tell Kar off, when Kar suddenly planted a huge kiss on a startled Kurt (and the fans!). The rejection and bullying that followed led Karofsky to attempt suicide. His dad rescued him.

It's spooky how this cast had a lot of conspiracy theories like puck wanting to make a sex tape and then he says I'm either going to end up in jail or dead and it happened or Finn finding out his dad died from a drug overdose and he didn't want to turn out like him and he died of a drug overdose in real life or Santa singing when I die young and she literally died young and then this Blaine singing a song about suicide and his brother in real life committed suicide it's crazy coincidences or are they

This is my favorite cover Glee ever did. I absolutely love this song and Darren’s emotions singing it were so perfect. I equally enjoy Darren’s version to the original and that’s saying something bc I REALLY love the original. The scene in the show was so heartbreaking. But I think it was important to show and obviously still important to talk about today. I just found out about Chuck’s passing yesterday. “My brother Chuck” used to be a little joke in the Starkid fandom because Darren talked about his brother (and his band Freelance Whales) all the time. He looked up to him so much and I can’t even imagine what he and their family are going through right now.

Darren always performs with his body, it was not an exception for this performance, in fact this's his trademark and this song is rarely out of the setlist at his shows. His vocals are absolutely phenomenal and he always dominates the stage when he's performing. He deserves more recognition for sure.

you do know karofsky but he's more of a background bully character in season one, he comes a little more to the light in season 2 specially in episode 6 i think it is, this song with this back and forward and this episode is heartbreaking

Karofsky's storyline is one of glee's peak highlights and Cough Syrup is easily one if not the greatest glee performance ever. Season 3 is the best season for sure

Anyone who is suffering with depression, please reach out 💓 you are not alone. There is always someone to help and talk to. Reaching out was the best decision I ever made. I encourage anyone else struggling to do the same. It might seem like a scary step but all you need to do is ask for help, and you’ll have overcome a massive hurdle 🥰

The look in Audrey's eyes hits me immediately. The look says so much.😭 For me the best song and the most dramatic scene of the whole series. The way Darren Criss sings is perfect for me. I get goosebumps every time because I immediately have the scene in my head. Then I'm somewhere between bewilderment and close to tears.😢

You should react to Blaine's second version of Teenage Dream in Glee 4x04. It's an excellent example of how the same song can be Sung by the same artist completely differently when the intent and emotion behind it are different. I'm curious on your opinion on his second interpretation.

@@margaux06 Yep. in fact Darren did most of them those songs which are sung live in the show. "Teenage dream" , "against all odds" and "suddenly seumour" + a part of "nothings gonna harm you" are those Darren's songs if I'm right.

Max Adler(Karofsky)'s acting during Cough Syrup just gets me everytime I rewatch the performance, I feel so bad for Karofsky while I watched the whole scene 😭💔 And just to get the plus, we get Darren's vocals, just to make Cough Syrup performance so powerful

This is the Glee cover I became obsessed with- even though I hardly noticed it when I first watched the episode (for obvious reasons) and had never heard the song before. I got a second chance when it came on Spotify when I was listening to other Glee favorites. It was number one on my playlist that year. My heart goes out now to Darren and his family for their loss.

i was so happy to see this notification and then to see that it was uploaded to go alongside and pay respect for Chuck is both beautiful and heartbreaking. I'm still over come with emotion everytime i think about what Darren and his family are going through right now and it is all just a big shock, RIP Chuck - your talent and joy lives on.

This is so haunting. It’s so eerie how some of the characters that have passed have moments like this. Naya with “if I die young” too haunts me. It’s one of my favorite covers from the show. Watching this live when it aired I sobbed. You’ll see it later in the show but Karaofsky (the character you don’t know) has such a full arc in the show. It’s amazing tbh

i think the reasons for these recording 'enhancements' could be the footage you're watching being pitched up due to copyrights? i kinda noticed that with the other reactions as well. The original scene from the episode didn't have these pitch adjustments, and it actually sounded raw.

This song is always so hard to listen to for me now, because I'll always have the montage of what the show was showing in the back of my mind. And especially because it's so heartrending and heartfelt and the emotion of the scene is in Darren's singing, as well. It's an amazing rendition of the song.

For reference, for some reason the KZfaq video of this song is transposed higher (probably because of copyright) which is why his vocals sound so weird and edited. There is a live version of him singing it or you can watch the episode version which I believe isn’t transposed like this! Also I just wanna say thank you so much for covering this song! It’s probably my favourite glee cover and I keep coming back to it when I need to let out some emotions 💙

Oh, also, Darren does a version of Against All Odds in season 5, that was not pre-recorded; in order to make it sound more emotional. So, he actually sings and plays the piano live, in the moment. Which gives him the raw sound, you were looking for in this video.

In looking for more raw singing from Darren on this one... I think the more polished approach actually works at this point in time for his character, who has always been a bit buttoned-up, well-to-do, super polite, good kid, who doesn't lash out (and probably has a bit of a struggle with expressing some of those deeper, angrier emotions). This song (and "Fighter") were probably the first times we see Blaine (Darren's character) start to express more of that side of himself, instead of the usual upbeat, sweet, romantic or fun sides. But there's no question that Darren himself would be able to add more raw to the song. It just doesn't fit the character in this moment. That's my take, anyway.

There are some videos in the KZfaq where the audio it's diferent from the showed in the series due to copright, i think. His voice actually is more raw in this cover with the original audio.

Spoiler: Long story short, the character shown being bullied (and who attempts suicide) is Dave Karofsky - he was an antagonist in the early seasons of Glee, targeting the Glee Club and Kurt in particular. It’s later revealed that he’s gay, and transfers schools. This happens at his new school. In light of Darren’s brother’s death, this song is particularly heartbreaking.

god, this episode broke me and this scene was so haunting, but important to portray and remind people that asking for help is okay, that no one is truly ever alone. I've just found out about Darren's brother and I'm speechless... to know how much he looked up to his brother and to find out what happened is heartbreaking.

That character is Dave Karofsky. He originally went to McKinley and was Kurt's bully. I won't say more than he has a very tragic storyline for most of the show. The actor who plays him really did an amazing job at playing the character.

I remember a couple of years ago I watched Glee with my mom and when this scene happened I felt really weird because I'm gay (although my mom didn't know) but mostly because a few months ago I had a suicide attempt, almost in the same way but with a rope, anyway it's horrible how things can affect you so much if you don't have support. No one should have to go through this kind of situation.
