If you are singing 5-7x a week for these broadway shows, you’ll probably understand better why Lea is doing these mix techniques like “operatic-contemporary..ish mixing” that you noticed picking. This is acceptable to protecting her voice, you should listen to some of her interviews as well. The musical geniuses were the once who taught her to do this if I remember it right from one of her interviews.

She talked about using classical methods during her Broadway runs when she was losing her voice to save it. I remember her speaking about it on one of the episodes of The Voice. So that's probably what she was doing here to prevent strain.

Singing in broadway is different from just singing technically, it is harder cause you need to be technical and operatic at the same time and you need to act while singing and sing your song with full emotions, you are the embodiment of the song you are one with it rather than just hitting the notes and you do this world class singing in fromt of VIP and Legends of the world for 3 times a day or more, 7 times a week. She has been in Miss Saigon, Les Miserables and other Broadway shows all days of her life for decades continuously in both London and New York. Voice of Disney Princesses and Tony Award winner. Who can judge her when she is more experienced than anyone it is like Godfather of cooking Marco Pierre White being scored and judged by Michelin people when he has the most experience than everyone lol.

You are concerned about the techniques of how her tongue gets in the way. Reasons: saving and protecting her voice and positioning her mouth, tongue and face because she is acting at the same time. If it is simply a studio recording without acting in front of an audience, then you will hear a different technique. Lea would not be Lea in the musical world if she does not know the proper techniques.

I'm no vocal or singing expert but as a thespian too, what I know is her placement or techniques is not just technical... it also needs to adjust on the mood and acting she needs to do for that scene. That is why her facial expressions including her mouth and/ or tongue might also vary from what is expected with from just singing alone. And there are specific words that we need to emphasize and that too can make a whole lot of difference. More so, it's no joke when we had to tour and do 3-4 shows a day or even simply needing to preserve your voice for several runs. It has to be a balance of both acting and singing. We can't afford to compromise or lose one. I suggest we try to do it too in front of a mirror or record ourselves. Do this at least 2x a day for 7 days straight and not just with one song. Sing it with emotions and a character to portray then we'll see how complex it can really get. And for her pulling it off... no words. :)

Lea is actually 15 years older in this video from the prior Eponine performance, so I think the vowel sounds here are a purposeful choice. It seems she's putting on a more mature, "weathered" affectation as Fantine to distinguish the two different characters she's played. My guess is that this choice was very deliberate, so audiences didn't envision her as Eponine again (youthful, juvenile, impetuous, optimistic).

No, her tongue isn’t in the way, just like how you tried to mimick how you thought she sounded. You can clearly see that her tongue placement is relaxed on the video. It just how she colors her voice. In this role, Fantine has to have a thicker and darker sound to resemble a more mature character.

It may not be her tongue but the singer is pronouncing the vowels in a very round way and not emphasizing the eeeeeee, which does lend to a warmer sound than if she did it the way this person is mentioning. I think it sounds fine either way, but she is definitely accessing the note from a falsetto/head voice which a lot of folks have mentioned is a solid technique to protect the vocal chords for folks that sing professionally in lots of back to back shows.

I’ve never seen anyone do this song better than Lea Salonga, imo, and her performance during this 25th anniversary show was absolutely amazing. I love her voice…in no way a trained vocal coach or anything!! I’ve never seen her perform anything that wasn’t just stunning. Have you done a review of her singing “Movie in My Mind” for an anniversary concert of Miss Saigon? The duet with her and Rachelle…gahh, forgetting her last name, was so great…from just a lover of musicals and singers with beautiful voices. Also, do you think that when someone like Lea, who has probably had a lot of professional training, thinks about the things your talk about (facial moves, palette, etc) when they are singing…or do they just get into the moment during a performance…no idea.

Lea Salonga, Musical theatre icon 😍. This isn't even the Les Mis part or song that she is best known for (Eponine, and On MY Own) which shows her incredible range. I love that because she was too old to play Eponine by the time the 25th anniversary concert she was cast as Fantine and was incredible. Mostly she is credited for changing perceptions in Broadway audiences about casting outside the original ethnic origin of the character. She was the only ethnic minority cast member in Les Mis. Plus she is the voice of TWO Disney princesses (Jasmine and Mulan).

Lea had perfectly sung this with her own style and technique, if you were at her situation with all those factors that would interfere her voice doing acting while singing and not feeling well that time but still she handled it very smoothly and amazingly... Lea is one in a million , recognized and honored.

She's really a Disney Princess, Ms Saigon and Broadway. A whole new world, original version was sung by Brad Kane (Aladdin's singing voice) and Lea Salonga (Jasmine's singing voice) in 1992

Maybe the reason for the tongue pulling back is because of what the character feels at that moment/situation OR maybe is it the accent of the character that she wants to portray. Just my two cents.

she does that (pulling the tongue backwards - operatic sounding) because she wants to sound like she's CRYING in the song.. because that part of the story was full of MISERY after what FANTINE had to experience in her life. so, it's intended and not by accident.

I saw the original cast in London with the great Colm Wilkinson as Valjean and Roger Allam as a brilliant Javier. The Soprana who sang this song adopted a more fragile approach, much less Push than Lea is using both very affecting. Both interesting versions.

Ealing’s is simply making artistic choices, using her classical voice for certain notes over a metallic belt sound throughout…it’s called tonal colour And the examples the coach here, herself is giving are pretty shrill sounding

I actually preferred Ruthie Henshall’s Fantine from the 10th Anniversary Concert. I will always see Lea as Eponine thanks to TAC, she was top notch there.

Going to give a like and request a video on Either "Who am I?" Or "Master of the house" from that 25th concert, it would be interesting to see you breakdown how Matt Lucas's vocal choices add to the comedy

Revelation (Mood Video, 2022) This song was the first completely original song by Diana Ankudinova, she herself wrote the lyrics and composed music. Several dozen reactions (total 137 reactions), all reactionaries are shocked once again, but now not only by Diana's voice, but also by a talent that can create not cheap one-time music, but hits for all time.
