id love to see you react to her 25th aniversary performance as ebinene in les mis. so you can see some of the stylistic choices she made between the stage performance and the film. personally she will always be ebinene in my mind, she does such a good job of the part.

Samantha Barks is honestly one of my favorite performers. From starting on ALWs “I’d Do Anything”, to find a Nancy for his production of Ol!ver, to Elsa in Frozen. And yes, this entire movie was sung live. On My Own was probably one of my favorite numbers because it was the most believable. You’re unrequited love chose someone else, you’re in the cold rain…you’re essentially in pain.

I was lucky enough to see her playing Eponine in the West End back in 2010. She slayed it, so I was super excited when they announced the casting for the film. They need to stop casting big names and just cast the west end stars, this performance shows why! it's their craft and they don't get enough credit for it.

It's crazy to think they told her to hold back on her vocals. They said she was making everyone sound bad, and her vocals were too powerful. She is an amazing singer, and actress. All hail the friendzone national anthem.

I know it’s kind of a controversial opinion, because everyone loves Anne Hathaway, but this performance saved the movie for me. I wasn’t a theatre person when this came out, and I was pretty disappointed with the movie overall until Sam sang this. After that, I discovered Lea Salonga’s version, and my love for theatre grew. I think Sam Barks is just incredible in this.

Samantha is wonderful, you can see her musical theatre experience trespass the screen, the way she sings, the way she expresses; as much as I enjoyed other actors performances, nothing compares to her (maybe Aaron Tveit). It becomes even much more noticible if you watch Les Mis performance at the Oscars, you can see how she had to "tone it down" to match the others,... and she is still a standout!

You're not wrong. I feel the big misstep this movie made is in its casting. Hugh Jackman is a good singer, but wasn't good enough to do Val Jean, same for Javert and Russel Crowe, and they hold up the entire first half the movie. This is why I've felt it gets much better in the second half, as Eddie Redmayne, Sam here, even Amanda Seyfried are stronger in their roles than Jackman and Crowe.

I've watched the movie, and i really, really cried when she sang on my own, it's so painful that makes you want to never fall in love, specially in a one big, hopeless, one sided love. I'm still mad that Sam didn't win 'I'd Do Anything' in 2008, but she has had a much more prominent career than the winner so I guess it worked out okay. God I love Samantha Barks! She somehow managed to sit down and essentially curl up into a ball and still hit those notes. That’s amazing. Also the whole song barely has any cuts (camera changes) in it so could quite possibly have been shot all in one take. (Unlikely, but possible) On top of this, she is singing live whilst getting soaked from sprinklers that were making the rain. She is my favourite Eponine ever. There’s a reason she got to play the part in 3 different productions of the show.

I never noticed the differences in the I love him lines and I'm a huge fan of the musical. It's been awhile since I watched/listened to Les Mis, but I think that the end of on my own works well as her realization of her love. Before that she shows that she's attracted to him and that she is hurt that he falls for another girl, but I don't think she says the words until On My Own.

I have to disagree with you about the "I love him"s. She's stated that she loved him many times already in the song, so it's not as though she's just realizing it. I see a girl who has built up these wonderful scenes in her head where he's by her side and loving her just as much as she loves him, and she's built these scenes because of the years of abuse she's suffered at the hands of her parents, and life as a poor person at that time in general. But now, she's seen the man she loves falling in love with someone else, and it's a girl she once thought of as a sister. So she consoles herself again with her fantasies, but for the first time she pictures him singing to a different girl as she sings the first "I love him" and the idea stops her for a moment. Then as she sings the second "I love him" a little stronger, he's vanishing from her side in the fantasy and appearing by Cosette's side. The final "I love him" is her acceptance that her love for him will always remain, but it will now always be "but only on my own", as she watches the hope of their love crumble away before her eyes. And it breaks my heart even more that she follows him to the barricades knowing she could die, but not caring because she would die with him nearby and she might be able to protect him by dying in his place... because "she loves him". That's the reason for the song "A Little Fall of Rain" and the reason why it rips my heart out more than any other song in the show - that and the fate of the boy Gavroche.

That’s the difference between theatre and cinema… plus that’s also the director probably encouraging more ugly facial expressions… but I also prefer Lea Solona version

Have you seen the Samantha Barks performance from the 25th anniversary concert. Don't remember if there is much difference in terms of facial expressions, but you need to remember that this is meant for a movie kind of acting. Still get your preference though, Lea is amazing.

Samantha barks sings with much more real and a raw emotion to me than Lea Salonga. Lea Salonga focusses much more on vocal and enunciation perfection, to the point where there’s not enough emotional focus for me. That’s why her face is so “Pretty”.
