Justin, thank you for your insightful reaction to this Angelina Jordan performance. It is obvious that you are a true professional who understands the technical and artistic aspects of vocal music. As a retired music educator and jazz musician, I hold Ella Fitzgerald as the gold standard for embellishments, riffs, runs, whatever you want to call them. She would not only emulate the improvisation of the great instrumentalists of her day, she created her own style that set her apart from everyone else. She always stayed within the changes of the music and never did too much or too little, just the right amount. So many of today's singers do "vocal gymnastics" without really understanding the musicality that is required to be artistic. Through training and sheer innate ability, Angelina "gets it" and we, her audience, are immensely fortunate to listen to her artistry. I like to think of her as the Barbra Streisand of the 21st century. Not because their voices are alike, but because Angelina will be as much or more of a superstar as Barbra was in her prime.

Seriously, in my opinion this was not an audition this was Angelina's coming out mini concert to the rest of the world that has not had the honor to witness her vocal artistry. She owns the stage the minute she steps on it. The bare footed princess of song has entered the building... Angelina's opening phrase just mesmerizers and masterfully commands everyone's full silence and awe of her vocal artistry. She has fulfilled her stated dream when she 6 years old of becoming a super star , however, she has now gone way beyond that and has now become a Jazz singing living legend barely starting her teenage years of life. She has over 120 covers and other videos that she has recorded between the ages of 6 and 14 which is her current age. She has already established herself as an established jazz artist. Her preferred genre is Jazz but she has done covers of about every genre you can name. What you will find in Angelina is a vocalist who doesn't do vocal gymnastics, she simply and beautifully interprets the story and meaning of the song and pours her soul into every performance. I'm happy to see that the world is starting to listen to Angelina. I remember hearing her singing Fly Me To The Moon 6/7 years ago on Norwegian television, and I was positive that she would become a legend. Best voice I’ve ever heard hypnotic

I truely believe that Angelina is a musical genious. Somebody has that ability to always get the pitch right. And she has said she is not nervous, she gets so into the song, I guess if she could, she would prefer to keep her eyes closed during the whole performance. But I think doing that would not be smart in front of an audience.

She didn't modify the "A" on the word mama actually, that's how it sung. I believe that Queen sings it that way, and that's definitely the way I learned it in choir years ago.

First, did you know she was thirteen when this was recorded? Angelina says she is never nervous before she sings. She said on Skavlan when she sings she goes to another world, it's endless. I was so happy hearing you refer to "dancing around a note." To me, there are singers who can sing each note, loud to soft, on pitch. They sing each note but that is it. Angelina dances with her notes. She dances around, up and down her notes. A single note becomes three as she sings into the next. I can't stop listening to her.

I quite like your sensitive technical approach on Angelina`s voice. Whereat I´d prefer to say that her voice is floating and not dancing around those musical themes. Such term might also be a hint on her general approach on and relation to music, the reason for her non-nervousness and the ease she's is singing with since it appears not to exhaust her in the slightest and to be a just a part of her natural breathing process. She has always wanted to sing music that requires a lot of breath, so she has had to have great breath management. If you listen to her at 7, 8, 9 years old, you'll be shocked at what such tiny lungs can do, without ever sounding strained. At 6 years old, she had to take the occasional "emergency breaths", but, even then...

The style she brings to all her performances in various degrees, is Jazz singing. She grew up listening to her grandmother's great female jazz and blues greats: Ela Fitzgerald, Billy Holiday, et al., and even the more recent Nora Jones and Amy Winehouse. But young Angelina Jordan Astar always brings her own voice to every song she performs - she doesn't mimic or imitate other singers. Nor does she just dally in different musical genres.

If you look closely, you'll notice she is wearing a t-shirt with a picture of her as a child, when she won Norway GT. when she begins to sing, she gives him a glance and clearly he got the message, hence his stone cold face. After she had sung the first line of Gloomy Sunday when she auditioned for "Norway's got talent" at the age of SEVEN!!! Being a "vocal coach" listening to Angelina and realizing that what you try on your own, never ever can reach her to the ankles, probably make you think: "I will rather start digging for gold in Alaska, because this set a whole new standard and no one can match this, so better find another career".

A Masterclass

No one talks about it because it’s never come up. But I believe she has to have perfect pitch. Like you said. She moved to it in the very beginning opening. You can’t move to the correct note with relative pitch without another reference note. So she obviously has perfect pitch. BTW, not everyone can sing. I know it’s a sales pitch, but it simply isn’t true. You can learn easily how to control and harmonize, but if your tone deaf and your voice doesn’t have a pleasing resonance, you’re one of those idiots on America’s Got Talent, axed, in the first few shows, where they say “All my friends say I’m amazing.”
