This song doesn't have an original recording that was released. She wrote (by herself) the song in 2011-2012, but it didn't make the album, so she gave it to Little Big Town (in 2017), and it became very popular from them. Then, with the Red re-recording, she decided to record it and release it as a vault track. Babe is another song like this - written by her, didn't make the Red album, given to Sugarland (but featuring her; in 2018), and then recorded for the re-recorded album (in 2021) as a vault track. Babe had a co-writer, Better Man didn't have a co-writer.

Her first four albums are considered country albums and then she moved over to pop. This is from Red where she works with Max Martin for the first time, and her genre really started to change. This song was originally written for Little Big Town.

No, this song was originally written for Taylor to put on Red. After it didn't make the album, then she offered it to Little Big Town years later. But it was not written for them.

She actually handed this song off to "Little Big Town" many many years ago and they recorded it and won a few top awards for it. I love their version more bc they have a 4 part harmony instead of one voice. And thats one of the reasons why she gave it to them. She felt like it would sound good with many levels.

I think she was somewhat emulating the vocals of Little Big Town who originally recorded this song. It was written during the Red album songwriting sessions but wasn’t on the original album, and was actually a HUGE hit on country radio for LBT.

I think that the high note thing is stylistic because she has hit higher notes before and it doesn’t seem an issue (G5s). Also fun fact she said in an interview that she enjoys re recording songs she couldn’t master live years ago. She even went as far as saying she finds her old songs “easy to sing now” and she feels like a “completely different singer” ❤ Also you should check out some of her musical theatre stuff (Macavity, Beautiful Ghosts or even a recording of hopelessly devoted she did at 11) ❤

She wrote the song and she explains it live at the bluebird Café that she wrote song, but she didn’t think she needed to sing it that she heard it and three or four part harmony, and immediately sent it to “Little big town”who recorded it & it was a huge hit!

It's Jake Gyllenhall. So is "The Moment I Knew" Because of the birthday party references seen in All Too Well and TMIK. WANEGBT is about Jake and "I Almost Do" references WANEGBT meaning "I almost do" is also about Jake. Seeing as I'm the second comment this is exciting

Red is about Jake Gyllenhaal who she was dating around the time of Speak Now which was 2010 and then they broke up before Red so most of the songs are about Jake The song I Knew You Were Trouble is about John Mayer so if you want I highly suggest listening to the full song You actually heard a snippet of it when looking at live performances of Taylor singing high notes. I know a lot of people think that song is about Harry Styles but personally I don't see it

actually, she dated Jake in the fall of 2010. It started just about the time she released Speak Now in October, and was all over by Christmas. She wrote All Too Well during the band rehearsals for Speak Now. By the time Red was out, she had already been dating Styles. (Why WANEGBT had that Alice in Wonderland circus theme for the Red Tour -- Harry is a Cheshire cat who did the disappearing act)

Just a note - for the Taylors Version re-recordings she is trying to, for the most part, recreate the songs as close as possible. Which is likely, in my opinion, the vowels and high notes sound like “old Taylor”.

It was originally recorded for Red but didn't make the cut, she then gave it to "little big town" to record and it's a from the vault song. Their interpretation of the song feels a little sadder and more resigned. Taylor's version feels like the person singing the song feels empowered by making a hard decision. So both are great but it depends on your mood which one you want to play in the moment

There is no 'original' recording of Better Man. It didn't make the album. She offered it to Little Big Town and they had a HUGE hit with it. There is an acoustic recording of Taylor singing this at the Blue Bird Cafe. You should check out those two videos as well. (even if only for yourself... but I's love to see reactions to both as well! :)

Taylor tends to save the really strong belting for when she is live -- her albums are more restrained. Quite aside from any vocal training, mixing software and tech has changed sound a LOT in the last 17 years; her first songs were recorded in 2005/6 when she was 15 to 16. People differ, but she probably was not done growing until around 2010, so the "improvement" in her voice is also attributable to aging. For myself, I quite like her voice; but I don't expect her debut album to have the same tonal qualities as her Speak Now or Red albums. My favorite album, though --- depends on my mood. They are all good.

It's a vault track from Red. But she originally wrote it and then gave it to Little Big Town and that version got really popular. Now that she's doing these re-recordings she decided to record her own version and release it with Red TV, it wasn't part of the original Red album.

You should ABSOLUTELY listen to the Little Big Town version of this song which is who the song was given to. I love Taylor but Little Big Town knocked this out of the park. It sounds a lot more full and meaningful because it is a Quartet. The harmonies are ABSOLUTELY gut wrenchingly beautiful.

I don't think it really matters who the song was written about. Not all her songs even are about anycreature she knows, plenty of them are just purely imagined scenarios, told from the perspectives of purely imagined people. And personally I find it best to listen to all her songs assuming they're like that and not giving any thought to anything or anycreature in her life they could've been about. You really don't have to know any actual life context to enjoy them a lot of the time, and imo it's really best to just form your own interpretations independently of any of that.

No, it's not a "John Mayer song", it's a Taylor Swift song and is really annoying when people mainly focus on who are the songs thought to be about it and not for what they are.
