@@fishstick1013 True. But every rock singer, even the not-so-good ones technically, can still teach us and treat is to something different. Adam Gontier is one of my all-time favorite singers for his naturally warm, yet unique voice, same with Corey Taylor. two guys with extremely different voices, but with extremely close vocal styles. Both like distortion, growls, and cleans mixed in.

Casey P I must’ve missed the part where I said it was a competition. I was speaking as a musician and a gen x’r who was profoundly influenced by both artists. I was merely alluding to my personal feelings as to the tragic passing of either artist. I personally think Jeff was capable of achieving more in his life and music than Kurt. You know Kurt Being a junkie and all they tend to self destruct regularly anyway. Jeff’s passing was a tragic accident not self inflicted.

He had so many incredible lines, and was the master of the heart-wrenching "near the end of the song" devastator verses that just demolish any chance you had of not collapsing into tears if you've found your soulmate and lost them for whatever reason. A few of the most catastrophic for me... "This is my story for the dislocated Who want to love but who turn to be hated Because the lies of the spirit possessed you Because the eyes of your lover resist you Listen now, you keep your aim steady As your temple turns to kiss the pistol " -I Woke Up in a Strange Place "Mother dear, the world's gone cold No one cares about love anymore What will you say When you've seen my face Father do you hear me? Do you know me? Do you even care? What will you say When you've seen my face?" -What Will You Say "The bells out in the church tower chime Burning clues into this heart of mine Thinking so hard on her soft eyes and the memory Of her sighs that it's over It's over" -Last Goodbye "This is for all the headless acrobats faces crushed in the circus dust all for the law of gravity and the price of admission" -Moodswing Whiskey Yeah, they're all from Mystery White Boy, which I honestly think is the definitive Buckley album, though that's not a very popular opinion. He'd had time to road test the songs he'd been tinkering with on his own, and finally with a producer on Grace, but they still felt a bit anchorless and meandering on that album. No version of any song on Mystery White Boy has that quality, and every song is razor sharp and whittled to perfection, especially the generally awkward version of Eternal Life that made it onto grace. You could tell it had some really interesting ideas, but was nowhere near being a good or complete song. It took Jeff's discovery of varying forms of music to give him the insight to apply the kind of playing and tonality to it that makes it the powerhouse, borderline metal song it is on Mystery White Boy. It makes the version on Grace sound like a joke. In fact, every track on Mystery White Boy is better than its studio album counterpart, to the point where I simply don't listen to Grace, unless I want to hear the excellent version of So Real on there.

I remember first hearing Grace on MTV. I was blown away. For weeks, months even, I stayed tuned to MTV hoping to hear that song again. One thing I did remember were the legendary name "Jeff Buckley" and the album name "Grace". I couldn't find the album anywhere near where I live (a small town in The Netherlands). But finally I did find it. And it's still by far my favourite album ever. Later on I learned from my father that he actually saw him in Sin-é (he is a merchant marine captain). I would love to have that experience again, stumbling on something on t.v., radio, or live, that just, in an instant, changes your life forever! I still miss Jeff Buckley...

You must get some Chris Cornell on here. Either him with Soundgarden or his acoustic stuff. Does a lot of great covers too. Great channel btw!

Jeff Buckley was a god amongst men. Such a beautiful voice that has so much emotion in it, it reaches into your heart and you feel what he feels. If you haven't yet, last goodbye by Jeff was on everything from movies to TV shows in the 90's. I'd rather enjoy your break down of that song. And, should you have done it already, let me know so I can watch it. Thank you for you being you!

Pleaseeeee.... TYPE O NEGATIVE - BLACK No 1. At Bizarre festival. Peter Steele's voice deserves recognicement. Impossibly low with 0 effort and also can get quite high. 9 minutes of absolute darkness.

Lovely analysis. I'm covering and performing his version of Lilac Wine in my next set. Very tricky singer to emulate so I try and do it my way instead. He is such an enigma and would have been amazing to see what he produced had his life not been cut short

Great video and brilliant analysis, Beth! I'd love to see you do a Martin Tielli song, like Rheostatics performing "Stolen Car" at Vancouver's CBC studios in 1999, or Midwinter Night's Dream from Double Live (no video, unfortunately). Like Jeff Buckley, he is also lead guitarist. After you do Mike Patton, obviously.

Rock genre had so many iconic musicians over the decades. It becomes hard to explain to someone who isn't familiar with it. So i simply try to use some association that might remember some figures of our world landscapes. For example, Bowie is probably rock' n roll "Picasso" as Nile Rodgers well stated. I'd say without a doubt Jeff is Rock n roll's "Romeo" with a "David's voice", never heard anyone sing like him before or after!!

Jeff is like Chris Cornell, George Harrison.....many other elite with feel... and this man is still almost as forgotten as Shannon Hoon. Jeff died swimming in the Mississippi near Memphis. What a tragic story. Long live Jeff Buckley. May his music go on.
