My 20 year old son is going through a tough break up and I hesitate to tell him to listen to this song because it may be too much. But this is exactly how he's feeling. This is the kind of healing song that stands next to you when you feel this way and lets you know you're not alone, that it has been felt before.

Maybe suggest he listens to it but let him know what it might do/make him feel. Give him the choice for if he wants to listen to it or not. Hope he's doing better now, I'm pretty young (20) and had a nasty break up over a year ago, personally I wish I knew more Jeff Buckley at that time

Jeff Buckley always sang with total honesty and vulnerability. He's tearing his heart out in this song and he can't help but sing it the way he sings it with all that raw emotion. I've heard some people cover this song who have amazing voices but they don't put their skin in the game and sing it like they've lived what the song is about. Maybe they have lived it but you don't feel it when they sing it. It's an easy thing to understand but not an easy thing to do. His pain is out in the open here and the reason why it's so powerful is because he has the courage to leave nothing in the tank afterwards.

Here's the thing about Jeff which I heard a while back and perfectly sums him up as the astounding vocalist he is; he's not afraid to sound ugly. You could assess the way he sings from a technical aspect and be like "this is off key" or "that's not pitched properly", but in the context of the song, in the throws of its emotion, it's perfect. ETA: more Jeff, if you wouldn't mind.

The studio version of this song is, in my opinion, one of the best arrangements of a “pop” song ever. The little background vocal parts that pop in and out. The interplay between the organ and harmonium (that organ-like instrument in the intro, but it plays throughout the song). The subtle acoustic guitar that plays throughout and drives the song rhythmically. The wide dynamics of the song from whisper quiet to all-out. It’s just a masterclass in how to build a song for maximum heartstring pulling. Oh, and everything else about the song is incredible too!

Imho, not only is this song Buckley’s most profound piece of work in the lyrical sense, but I also hold him in the same regard as damn near mythical songwriting titans like Bernie Taupin, Bob Dylan, and Burt Bacharach, among many more. Buckley’s untimely death at the age of only 27 is one of THE greatest seminal, generational tragedies within the corresponding musical/artistic zeitgeist of their time, which easily places him up on that Mt Rushmore alongside the likes of Cobain, Lennon, Shannon Hoon, and Andrew Wood (among so many more), with regard to just how timeless, powerful, and far-reaching the scope of their work has been, compared to what it was and would’ve been had they lived longer lives. Young people are still discovering and rabidly consuming Buckley’s musical catalogue to this very day, a good 27 years after his passing, and for good reason. Thank you for making this video!!!

IMO one of the biggest loss in music, was his passing. Jeff moved on from Rebecca, to EF to Joan Wasserman. Jeff never had problems with female adoration. Look at him, woman and men loved him, his band mates were in sheer awe of Jeff. He would be 56 right now if lived, I saw him in Austin, Tx in 1994 it was like a dream. I spoke to him for maybe 60 seconds after he finished I had never heard of before and that 60 seconds is something you never forget never, ever!

@@Ridersonthestorm8899 thank you, Song To The Siren" I must agree. Were song lyrics meet poetry. As his voice draws you in with its hypnotic tone. Very little of it left in mainstream music. Tim Buckley, Leonard Cohen, Dylan, etc were a special group in this music genre & era. I often wonder if Tim Buckley was inspired by " Claude Debussy's -Nocturnes III Sirens". A composition of transcendent qualities, a masterpiece if beauty. But then everything Debussy has done is based on natural beauty., It's power serenity. Also Debussy having great admiration of the oceans/ water, his father being in the merchant marines. Recomed give a listen you know, if you haven't. It's not an exact comparison to TB but does have its authenticity. Jason Mraz - Beautiful Mess ( Nobel piece prize concert 2008.

As I understand, so listen to the first verse, it is about a funeral. The song is him after the fact trying to relive his beckons to her knowing full well he had failed her. His love and passion he hoped would make her come over, but she does not, and somehow, perhaps at her own hands, she does not survive. Rebecca did not do so, but as a song writer, he imagines perhaps his over-importance. Nevertheless, it is a lament of the ages. Think about it. If only I could have saved her. If only I could have made her love and trust me enough. We are together, not a funeral procession in the rain. Metaphor? Surely.

The TRUTH. 1 effin record. It's heartbreaking. He was literally coming into his own. Had no clue who he was at the time. Just imagine the music he would have made the last 25 years. We were robbed. As was he. It's easy to romanticize about it in hindsight. When many of the others from his time were barely keeping heads above the water he was just chill. Still to this day haven't seen a single guitar solo. He could have given 2 shits. I gaurantee if he had been inclined to do such things he would have embarrassed other players. His tone is otherworldly....
