As far as I know, Tatiana was self-taught, just from growing up listening to metal and figuring it out.

I love people's first reaction to Tatiana's voice, I have no idea how a small person can make such a terrifying sound but it's awesome. She has the voice of an angel and a demon :-)

Great reaction young lady. Yeah Tatiana is a phenomenal vocalist. Jinjer as a whole are all phenomenal, Eugene (bass), Roman (guitar), and Vlad (drums) are insane musicians. Tati gets the most attention because of her incredible vocals, but make no mistake, the guys are equally talented, they compliment each other perfectly. I'm gonna suggest another Jinjer reaction that I think you'll absolutely love, and that is Judgement (& Punishment) Tatiana Shmayluk one take vocal performance. I never get tired of these reactions and as much as I love how effortlessly she shifts between the softly almost serenaded vocals and the false fold screams, the part that gives me chills is when she starts belting it out on “…searching for hooks to catch on…”.

Love when you were wondering who taught her how to sing like that. She is self taught. From a young age she fell in love with heavy metal and screaming and decided that was what she wanted to do when she grew up. Pretty cool story. Watching their live shows is pretty cool. She is such a strong singer but the band is equally as talented in their own right. Such a great comp.

All I can say is that if you ever get the chance to watch hem live and in person, do it. I drove over an hour away and stood in like for 2 hours in the freezing rain and snow and it was worth every second. The whole band are masters of their instruments and they are beasts. They are willing to play small shows as well so you can be right there in the middle of it.

My wife and I, just saw Jinjer on tour on October 29th. The whole band was absolutely amazing, and I say this as someone who has been to well over 150 shows from punk, to classic rock, to extreme death metal, to black metal, etc. During that time I've seen bands that killed it, and I've seen bands that struggled and the singer could not do what they did in the studio. Tatiana has no problem performing for almost 2 hours straight and sounded great on every song. Her clean vocals were amazing sending chills through your body, and her heavy vocals were spot on as well. Jinjer is a powerhouse, comprised of top notch musicians that are masters of their craft.

I know a lot of people go right to Perennial live at Wacken but I think the live, one take of Judgement and Punishment is a great follow up. Her switches are rapid and she displays three different styles in the first three sections on the song. Amazing talent. And all coming out of her little 5'3" frame!

Loved your reaction! You actually named one thing that, I think, doesn't get enough recognition. That's how she places the words onto the music. It's really very odd, but she makes it work incredibly well, and it adds so much atmosphere to the song. This band is truly one of a kind.

I absolutely LOVE watching reactions to this song. Tatiana Shmayluk is absolutely incredible.

She's the best metal singer in the world right now, no contest. Maybe the best singer period. No one has close to her range. The best pop stars would be humiliated to take the stage with her.

From what I understand, Tatiana is self-taught.. Some other good ones from Jinjer: "Mediator" and "Wallflower" from their latest album. Some older stuff that you should check out: "Perennial", "Sit, Stay, Roll Over", "Pit of Consciousness", and "Teacher, Teacher" If you're interested in this genre of female metal growlers, consider Arch Enemy (Sweden), Spiritbox (Canada) plus a couple of defunct bands, Cerebral Bore (UK) and ReVamp (Netherlands). The lead singer from ReVamp is now with Nightwish and these days she rarely uses the technique as it doesn't fit their style. She is a classically trained soprano so in what is probably the most drastic transition in music, she can cut from a growl to an operatic head voice in the span of a single note.

As a plastic surgeon, I'm often presented cases that request Anterior glottal web formation. This surgery creates a web or scar band at the front of the V of the vocal cords (anterior commissure). This shortens the vocal cords to help raise voice pitch. The lead singer Tatiana sounds like an Alto (please correct me if I'm incorrect) which should allow the growls to access a tad easier but Tatiana has exceptional control and this is very rare. You can't surgically create this sound. Excellent video and I like this song.

This one gets everyone first time. I can't think of any other vocal reaction video that blows everyone away like this one. Pantera's Cemetary gates comes close because it's also unexpected, but not to this level.

Two others you'd surely like/be impressed by are Perennial, Live at Wacken (pronounced Vah-ken) Open Air 2019. There's an instantaneous switch from scream to clean with no more than maybe 0.2 seconds between that'll blow your mind... plus it's true live, where this studio session was filmed live, as in real singing and playing and not miming for a music video, but was still a studio production, so multiple takes, post-processing, layering, etc. And then Judgement (& Punishment), Tatiana's one-take vocal performance, where she sings a very challenging song in one take with no effects or layering, just her voice (and EQ, compression, reverb, of course), to show she really does make those sounds. Everything Jinjer does, literally every song, is absolutely incredible, so if you like metal, they're well worth checking out. Even if it's not your usual thing, though, check out those two. Judgement (& Punishment), especially, is a side-on camera shot, uncut, with her in a bikini with absolutely nowhere to hide what she's doing with her musculature and embouchure. Perhaps most impressive at all is, other than a few singing lessons as a young girl, she's entirely self-taught, including the screaming technique. Sadly, she's kind of like the Freddie Mercury of our time... she doesn't take care of her voice, doesn't warm up or cool down, she smokes and drinks and then just goes on stage and owns it with unbelievable amounts of raw talent. She herself admits she knows her voice is a finite resource and she won't be able to scream like she does forever... though actually I think she's kind of stumbled onto proper techniques that are safer and more healthy than she thinks, unlike Freddie.

Pisces is a great song to turn people on to Jinjer that do not necessarily like heavy music. Tatiana Shmailyuk is an amazing writer and performer and her band mates are excellent musicians. I have seen them live twice now and I will again. Never a disappointment.

Always fun to see someone new discover their music. A lot of us were never into such harsh vocals until we heard Tatiana do them. There have even been vocal coaches who started learning to scream after watching them. ;) Just saying. This is... live-ish... I'd suggest a concert performance to follow up. Perennial live at Wacken is a virtuoso performance all around, though there is a bit of post production and vocal layers added. If you want to try something a bit less usual they did a virtual festival called Hellfest At Home earlier this year and the last song is a brand new one of theirs called Vortex which is incredibly impressive as she leveled up her vocal skills during lockdown (there is one bit where they added a harmonizing vocal layer on backing track). I love their energy, how tight they are, the heaviness mixed with complexity and groove, beautiful singing and growling and especially Tatiana's lyrics! The first time I heard Pisces I hadn't liked any metal with growling and it took me a few listens to start liking it, but now Tatiana is my favorite vocalist and Jinjer my favorite band. TLDR: skip to the last paragraph 😂 Sorry for the long comment, I just love Jinjer too much and love seeing people discover (and usually fall in love with) them and each of their songs! My three favorite comments about Jinjer that I've seen, "terrifying levels of talent", "I hate it when a Jinjer song ends", and "that was more unexpected than my first child" 🤣 I love the story of Tatiana getting interested in learning to growl. In her own words, "I was inspired by Otep (Shamaya). When I was 15, my friend showed me a record of House of Secrets. I was like, ‘That dude - his voice is so powerful. And he said, ‘Oh come on Tatiana, that’s actually a woman!’ I was like, ‘What?’ She blew my mind. That was the time, the moment when I realized I wanted to shock people just like her. I just had the feeling or the intuition, like an extra sense that this is what I’m made to do.” For most of their songs, the three guys write most of the instrument music, then Tatiana writes most of the lyrics and melodies (she gets tons of well deserved credit for her vocal and stage performance abilities, but maybe not quite enough for her lyrical and musical composition abilities). Roman the guitarist has written a lot of the instrument music in the past, so he's a huge part of the beautiful sound of Jinjer, but Vlad the drummer (who also plays guitar and classical piano, but so far not in most Jinjer songs - I think he played piano in lainnereP) has been writing more of it and wrote nine of the eleven songs for the newest album Wallflowers, first three videos are out for Vortex, Mediator (heavier) and Wallflower. Eugene composes some - he wrote the instrument music for one song on Wallflowers and a few songs on other albums, and I know that apart from his amazing work on the bass, he adds riffs and has written lyrics for a few Jinjer songs. The band (all members have been Ukrainian, with Russian their first language) started in eastern Ukraine in 2009 as a group of three (then five) with none of the current members (they consider the official start of the band when Tatiana replaced the male vocalist and Roman joined as lead guitar 2009/2010), Vlad is the fifth drummer (joined in 2016) and it's been a group of four since 2015 (though they consider their road sound engineer Sasha to be a fifth member). I think they're still friends with all the former members. One of the things I love most about Jinjer is the messages in Tatiana's lyrics and the way she combines growling and beautiful singing with Jinjer's fantastic instrumentals to be so powerful for expressing the anger and pain in those messages: the anti-war message in Home Back, the anti-greed in On The Top, Mediator and No Hoard Of Value (also the horror of the coal mining industry in their home Ukraine), the protest song Who Is Gonna Be The One, the anti-fascism of Sit Stay Roll Over, the anger at people being narrow minded in Teacher Teacher and Judgment & Punishment, the struggles with mental health in Pit Of Consciousness, Vortex, Wallflower and Perennial, the giving voice to mother nature angry at humanity for letting capitalism destroy her in a bunch of songs like Ape, The Prophecy, Cloud Factory, Noah, Outlander, Dip A Sail and Bad Water. Other favorites are I Speak Astronomy, Retrospection, Words of Wisdom, Just Another, Captain Clock, Scissors, Exposed As A Liar, I Want It I'll Get It, A Plus Or A Minus, When Two Empires Collide, lainnereP, Prologue and Beggar's Dance (those last two are short album bookends that might do well together in one reaction). I haven't found a Jinjer song I don't love, so I think you can't go wrong if you choose any of them, but a few good choices might be Perennial (official and/or live at Wacken, both are must-see), Teacher Teacher (official and/or live in Melbourne), Judgement & Punishment (official and/or Tatiana's one take performance, again both must-see), Pit of Consciousness (official and/or live in Kiev/Kyiv, a third where both are absolutely must-see) or the heartwrenching plea against war in Home Back (official video). Note that because Jinjer has so many great official videos and so many astounding live performance videos, no Jinjer fan will ever mind if you react to a second video for a Jinjer song you've already heard, so whichever songs you choose, whatever pace you like: Enjoy! ❤🖤🤘
