The voice coach nails the review. I am an early Madonna fan. I always heard she had a huge work ethic but it certainly does not sound like she’s taking care of her vocal cords. She was never Adele but this is not even the standard for Madonna.

She had to be completely aware of how bad it was, as the version which has been uploaded to her official channel has been edited (!) so she sounds much better there...

I grew up listening to Madonna and I have no clue on vocals but I can clearly hear an echo and more robotic voice!!! That's sad!!

In regards to age, they had two singers older than Madonna, Gali Atari and Ilanit and they both killed it.

Even Serhat sounded better than her. Her performance showed that even the worst participant of ESC is a great singer.

I'm a very long-term Madonna fan too Georgina and I have to agree with you 100%. Obviously, I don't know what Madonna does or does not do in her private life, but the vocal performance doesn't give me the impression of someone who practices much nowadays. She's always been 'potentially' a bit ropey if she turns up to sing live between tour cycles, and then improves - often really quite significantly - for the tours themselves. But this was a car crash. If a singer is a vocal athlete, this is someone who isn't putting the hours on the track, so to speak. This is a shame because she *can* sound amazing live, though you wouldn't know it listening to this. It didn't help that there were 26 performances before this (and several more if you count the other interludes) where - like the songs or not - the singers all pretty much achieved what they wanted to vocally. If Madonna is honest with herself, she'll recognise that her vocals let her down badly; in fact, her people effectively already have by the fact that the version of this on the Madonna KZfaq channel has a different vocal performance (either from rehearsals or cleaned up) on it. I agree again with the staging not being ideal - going down the stairs while singing live is hard enough. Doing so while having a long robe to tuck up to avoid a Brit Awards style massive fall is another level of hard. But, doing so *also* with an eyepatch on which reduces her vision is bordering on crazy. You can see her eye is fixed on the steps as she's going down, she's obviously not comfortable at all. That's super-inhibitory for a singer in a live performance. I also agree that her breath control isn't right as well. Without wishing to sound rude, she's not quite as in shape as she normally is when she tours (she normally transforms into a machine-like lean creature, sometimes bordering on the too thin), and that plus all the heavy getup she's wearing and the requirement probably has made things worse. As everyone's lung capacity decreases the further they get from about 20, she has to reach this level of fitness again if she's going to do the kind of performance where she moves as well as singing. Otherwise, it will have to be just the standard stand-at-the-microphone (not that there's anything inherently wrong with that, but it's not typically Madonna to do so). Like you, I'm not feeling this Madame X theme either, in terms of the styling or the indeed the music choices.

Only just come across this video but the look on your face when she sang the opening lines said it all. "Oh dear" is the understatement of the year. I've been lucky enough to see Elkie Brooks and Gladys Knight live and both fine ladies - although older than Madonna - are pitch-perfect every time. That's what you call true talent.

Hi, I’m from the Netherlands and the reason Madonna was at the Eurovision, was because she was asked to perform on this stage by the Eurovision. She got 1 million dollars for this.... the reason why they asked her is because the contest recently invited a ‘big star’ which was a huge success (more views) and decided to do this again. But the results (for one million dollars) were disappointing...... O, and I’m so proud. After 44 years The Netherlands won the Eurovision Song Contest. Our Duncan won! So... no, it wasnt because of a comeback. I’m not saying there is no comeback, but for this stage, she was asked (and I’m afraid will never be asked again🤭) Edit: The steps/stairs/decor came from herself

Tina in her most recent tour when she was 70 ran down a flight of stairs of equal length in a mini dress and heels, danced a bit and wasnt even out of breath when she launched into a rock number!! Technique and breathing control aren't helping Madonna but some singers are just always on the mark such as Tina Turner

Ooh you mentioned Tina Turner, does that mean a critique soon! Please do:) Madonna fan too! But no countries would have voted for her if she were representing them! lol It sounded like a struggle like it was very hard to sing, but Madonna appeared relaxed and confident and she wasn't moving much to affect her vocals. The lo-fi mix of the music really highlighted her lacklustre vocals here, Like a Prayer usually has a quite an up-tempo production.
